PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVES

Welcome back to week six of Term 4. As we reach this point in the term our HSC students have completed their examination obligations and most have started various phases of their working lives. Some by taking up casual employment others by finding more long term jobs within the town. We are rapidly approaching the very essence of the culmination of their time at school. This will be the Year 12 Formal in all its splendour and ceremony. This is the opportunity for our students to share the evening with families and the many people who have contributed to their successful completion of their formal school life. This is a chance to celebrate the time spent at school, the friendships and bonds that have been created during this period in their evolving lives. Many of the links made during this time will remain in place for many years to come. Even in the quiet reflective times when they may well have reunions and the like. In the short term, while some will move away to take up further training or education in a more adult realm. This is in no way to say that they have not made a lasting impression during their time at school. Or that they have not managed to clearly articulate just how grown up and adult they have become. But perhaps our current perspective may well be a little close to the memories that they have generated during their many years at the school. As with most things our recollections will age with them as they continue to mature in the future. We wish them well as they forge their own futures either within the town or in other locations. Our Year 9 & 10 students are currently at Myuna Bay taking the opportunity to engage in an assortment of challenging outdoor and social activities including a visit to Maitland Grossman High School as a prelude to their visit to our school and surrounding environs. I’m quite sure that a number of our students will find this aspect of the excursion very intimidating, purely from the point of view of the sheer size and scale of the school and its student population. The benefits of the excursion cannot be underestimated as this will give our students the opportunity to develop team work skills in a series of testing places and activities. I’m quite sure that they will all grow as a result of their experiences.

There always seems to be way too many things happening this term. That will certainly not diminish as the term draws to a close. This is no doubt highlighted by the vast array of activities that are still to be negotiated by the school. Keeping in mind that we will always look at ways to broaden our students’ experiences at school even in a very busy and complex term. All the best

K-12 NOTES 100 Nights Reading Congratulations to Khy Jess and Lani Dalton, who have both completed 100 nights of home reading in their READ IT Home reader. Lani and Khy will receive a book during this week’s Primary Assembly for their efforts. Parents are reminded that all primary students who achieve 100 nights home reading will receive a book award as part of our home reading program.

Year 12 Formal Their HSC Exams have finished and the Year 12 Class of 2012 is finally ready to formally celebrate the end of their secondary schooling this Saturday, 17 November 2012 at the Royal Theatre. Year 12 Advisor Miss Megan Baker has been busy preparing the evening, where students families and staff will gather to reminisce over the student’s secondary years. We are sure a great evening will be had by all, although there still remains an anxious wait for a number of students for their HSC results, as they intend to pursue a tertiary education. Good luck!

Kindergarten Transition for 2013 Students The Transition Program for 2013 Kindergarten students continues over the coming weeks this term. Parents of children eligible to enrol in Kindergarten at Balranald Central School in 2013 have received an information package and details of the Transition Program have been published in the school newsletter and publicised with posters located around Balranald. Last Monday week prospective students participated in activities in the K/1/2 classroom from 9.00am to 10.30am. The next session will take place this week on Monday from 9.00am to 11.00am, with this visit comprising of activities in the K/1/2 room and recess supplied by the School. If any parents of prospective Kindergarten students have any enquires please do not hesitate to contact the school on (03) 5020 2222.

Crunch & Sip Balranald Central School is planning to become a Crunch & Sip school. This program encourages fruit and vegetable snacking and drinking water by modelling healthy eating in the classroom. Crunch & Sip is a set break to eat fruit or salad vegetables and drink water in the classroom. Students refuel with fruit or vegetables during the morning, assisting with physical and mental performance and concentration. The planned ‘Crunch and Sip’ break gives children the opportunity to eat the piece of fruit that might have otherwise be left in their lunchbox or not eaten at all. Crunch & Sip will launch at Balranald Central School on Monday, 19 November 2012.

5 Rivers Indigenous Art Exhibition As part of the 5 Rivers Festival there has been a wonderful exhibition of Indigenous Art on display at the local Balranald Art Gallery. Last Tuesday students in Year 3/4 and Year 8/9 Visual Arts students visited the exhibition with Mr Allen and Miss Williams. Students had the opportunity to view the amazing works which included traditional dot paintings, landscapes, portraits, didgeridoos and woven baskets. Year 3/4

had the opportunity to meet local Indigenous artists Kay Dowdy and ‘Smokey’ Murray. Smokey spoke to the students about the significance of the art and how it represents dreaming stories and family totems and how the art was created. Kay demonstrated the art of wood burning, which is the process of burning lines into the surface of wood in various shapes and intensities, with a soldering iron type tool. The longer you hold the wood burning pen on the surface of the wood, the greater the charring, thus the darker the colour and the more depth you add. Balranald Central School would like to thank the gallery for letting us visit and both Kay and Smokey for their time in talking to students.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) News Planning for the implementation of PBL at Balranald Central School is going as planned. Although it may seem things have gone quiet, the committee planning its implementation is quietly going about preparing for full implementation in the beginning of 2013. The logo has been finalised and a draft matrix of expectations has been presented to staff. It is planned for the P & C to have the opportunity to view the matrix at their next meeting. Once fully approved signage will be prepared and systems that support the expectations and lessons to explicitly teach the expected behaviours will be presented to staff and parents for consultation.

Hot Weather As you will be aware the hotter summer weather has arrived. As part of the school Sun Safe Policy, students must wear a hat to participate in outdoor sporting and playground activities during the school day. Primary students should be wearing the bucket hats kindly funded by the P&C and if your child has lost their hat they can be purchased at the canteen. Any student not wearing a hat will have to remain under the Primary shade shelter. Please ensure your child wears their school hat to school each day. Students should also ensure they do not suffer from dehydration by drinking water at regular intervals during the day, especially at the end of recess and lunch. Primary students are allowed to take a water bottle containing

fresh water into their classrooms during lessons and students should be encouraged to bring water bottles to school. Please be aware that water bottles containing juice or cordial are NOT allowed in Primary classrooms. During some periods of hot weather the Primary playground may also be closed and students will utilise the air-conditioned school hall for lunch.

All secondary students are reminded that they must wear a hat for any outside activity. This includes sport, PASS, PDHPE, agriculture, recess and lunchtimes. If they do not have a hat they will be asked to remain under the hanger/COLA. The students have been told they can bring water bottles to class during hot weather.

Year 8/9 Myuna Bay Excursion This week sees Years 8 and 9 make the long trek to the Central Coast of NSW to participate in their bi-annual excursion to the Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Camp. Students will be accompanied by Mr White and Mrs Lloyd on the excursion. We are sure they will enjoy the week’s activities and return home safely.

Primary Assemblies The next Primary Assembly for Term 4 will be held this Friday, 16 November 2012 and will be presented by the K/1/2 class. This program will be followed by a visit to the school in Term 3 next year by the Solid State Circus which will present ‘State of Play’ which will consist of a circus performance for all students K-6, followed by circus workshops for students in Years 5 to 12.

Moulamein District PSSA Tennis Trials Last Friday Moulamein District PSSA Tennis Trials were held in Moulamein for Year 5 student’s trialling for selection at zone trials to be held early in 2013, when they are in Year 6. Loui Gervasi and Jack Connellan both travelled to Moulamein to represent Balranald Central School. Jack was successful in obtaining selection to attend the trials in 2013, coming second and Loui came fifth.

Bell Shakespeare Company Miss Jones is busy preparing for the visit of the Bell Shakespeare Company later this term. Many students may remember the visit by the company in 2010 and how engaged and popular the workshops were for all students. This year students from Tooleybuc Central School and Hay War Memorial High School will also travel to Balranald to participate in workshops. In addition, all primary students will also have the opportunity to participate. The Bell Shakespeare Company will be at Balranald Central School for two weeks, from Monday, 26 November to Friday, 7 December 2012.

Canberra Excursion Recounts The best thing on the Canberra excursion was when we went to Black Mountain Tower or Telstra tower as some people call it. When we got there we went up steps and then went into an elevator. The first level we went on had windows and was closed in. Then we went up-stairs on to a level that wasn’t closed in. It was really windy up there. On the way back to the bus Tima and Mrs Linnett were taking selfies. By Chloe Calleja My favourite activity in Canberra was Telstra Tower. The tower is a great view. It stands over 870m high. There is a level where you can look down at Canberra and it is so windy you almost fall over. My purse almost flew away. There is a café, a gift shop and also a restaurant. By Sophie Renfrey On Thursday at Canberra we went to the Telstra tower. When we got there we went up the stairs to the lift. The tower is up high on a mountain. The lift goes up really fast and there is a little thing what tells you how high you are. When we were up there I went for a walk around taking pictures. After about 15 minutes we went up these stairs to a big look out, it was so windy if you just stood there it would try to move you. Tima’s hair was blowing everywhere. By Jack Connellan On Wednesday we went to the Canberra Mint. First we walked up the stairs with 15,100 5 cent coins and a blank enclosed in it. The tour guide showed us a quick movie then we looked at the museum. The tour guide showed us through the glass and saw the workers making coins. The museum held lots of ancient coins and rare coins. There were also some

coins with mistakes such as a bolt sticking out of it. After we saw them we got to go and make a coin if we wanted to. By Lily Dunn On Wednesday the 24th of October 2012 Year 5/6 went to a movie theatre. We all got a bucket of popcorn and a soft drink. The movie was called Hotel Transylvania. It was about a vampire called Dracula and his wife was trapped in a house that was on fire. The wife went to hide with Mavis but sadly the wife died. Dracula built a hotel so Mavis could be safe. It was Mavis’s 118th birthday and a heap of fairy-tale monsters came. Somehow a human made it to the castle and fell in love with Mavis but Dracula wasn’t happy so he tried to get rid of him but it didn’t work in the end he ended up staying and Dracula was fine with it. The end By Jayden Wilkinson On Thursday the 25th of October Year 5/6 from Balranald and Tooleybuc went to Questacon. When we got there we sat down and waited. First we went to the vertical slide and then to the 360

o swing then we just kept going up the stairs and

playing with the stuff. After that we went and watched a man for about 30mins. Then we went to the shop and brought stuff then we got on the bus and left. By Will Morton The best thing about Canberra was going to the Black Mountain Tower (Telstra tower). At the Black Mountain Tower we went up an elevator; it took us up 860 meters. When we got out of the elevator there was a big view looking out over Canberra. Everyone took lots of photos. Then we got back on the elevator again and we went to the top floor where you can go outside. It was really high and very windy. By Madison Jess The best thing at Canberra was the Black Mountain Tower (Telstra Tower). When we got to the Black Mountain Tower, the closer we got the taller it looked. We got to look out the windows. Then 10 at a time, we got to go up to the next level and it was out in the open. Tima’s hair was going crazy. It was awesome. I think Black Mountain tower was the best. By Jordyn Jolliffe

Monday, 12 November 2012 Issue 35 – Term 4 – Week 6

The best thing about our excursion was Questacon. Before we went into Questacon we had lunch outside. When we went in we saw Clare school there. We got split into groups. Each group had an adult with them. We went everywhere in the building. We went on the vertical slide. Sophie and I went down but Edward chickened out at the top and came down the stairs. After that we went to a show a man put on for us. It was about physics and pulleys. It was alright. But overall Questacon was awesome!! By Kobe Lloyd My favourite part of Canberra was the National Zoo and Aquarium. When we got to the Zoo and Aquarium we met our tour guide; his name was Dylan. First we went into the Aquarium and Dylan brought out a corn snake. Its name was Frank. Everyone got to hold Frank; he was nice and smooth. Then we went out to the white lions. Mrs Linnett, Clive, Gavin, Daniel, Jack and I got to feed the white lioness called Mishka. It was fun. Then we moved on to the Kangaroos and Emus. We fed an Emu. Its name was Edwina. Then we moved on to the Giraffe. It was BIG. Then the rest of the people got to feed the Giraffe. I had a Great time!!!! By Kiandra Dalton

My favourite part was the Black Mountain Tower. We had to go up 890 meters up in the air in an elevator; it was awesome. Then we had a look at what Canberra looks like. Then we had the opportunity to go up a bit further up the stairs into the wind; the wind was blowing at 50kms. It was really cool. By Daniel Woolhouse My favourite part was Questacon. In Questacon Clive, Jacob, Blair and I went to all the exhibits. But my Favourite one was the one with the vertical slide. Jacob and I went down the vertical slide. It was so exciting. IT WAS SO much FUN!!! By Riley Pearce

Wanted, willing parents to billet a group of Year 9 students from Maitland Grossman High School Week 9 (2 December to 7 December) of this term. Steve and Nicole Ross (Ex Balranald teachers) are bringing 20 select Year 9 students to Balranald for an outback adventure. They will be touring Balranald/ Mildura/ Mungo while they are here. It is anticipated that the visiting students will be spending some time at the school and there is an anticipated Country (BCS) vs City (MGHS) sports day planned.

To keep their costs down and to provide students with the full Balranald experience, Steve is seeking interested families to billet the visiting students. Families do not necessarily need to be from the Year 9 group.

Balranald Central Year 8 and 9 will be meeting these students on their upcoming excursion in week 6.

Steve has put together the following requests of potential billeting families:

Billets – Students to be billeted in pairs. There are 10 boys and 10 girls, so looking for 10 billeting families. They do not have to be Year 9 student’s families. They have twins who will go together and they have special diet conditions due to anaphylaxis.

Meals – Billeting families would be responsible for breakfast on Mon, Tue, Wed and Fri as well as Dinner on Sun, Mon, Tue. There will be a BBQ on the Thursday night at school for all billeting families. Steve will organise all lunches for the week.

Transport – To school each morning and collect in the afternoon if necessary. Steve will organise afternoons on the run, depending on travel times on each day.

If you could host 2 or more students over that week, could you please let Stobon Lloyd know? Your hospitality will be very much appreciated.

$10 Sports Shirts For a very short time, you have the opportunity to purchase a Sports Shirt for only $10! These shirts are to be worn on Sports Day each week. This is a huge saving and won’t be offered again, so make sure you fill out your order form attached and get

it into the school ASAP!

PLEASE NOTE: This offer is for ONE SHIRT per student ONLY.
