What an extraordinary quarter we’ve had, thanks to generous donors! Your gifts made it possible for both Rec Mobiles to be stocked and staffed this summer and to fund our Family Assistance Program (which provides fee waivers for more than 1,000 low-income children and adults).

Nike gave $20,000 to be split between a brand new fall soccer outreach program aimed at Latino youth and this summer’s Rec Mobile.

Wayne Whitbeck, former trustee, gave $5,000 and NW Natural gave $2,500, both for the Rec Mobile. More than 1,400 low-income children will benefit from free day camp programs in their own neighborhoods. The gifts from Mr. Whitbeck, Nike and NW Natural will be added to those received last quarter from the Juan Young Trust and Parr Lumber.

Dick’s Sporting Goods, to celebrate its grand opening at Washington Square, made a $5,000 gift. Trustees attended the exciting VIP event.

Thanks to Rod Coles, chair of the Trails Advisory Committee and UPS employee, UPS Supply Chain Solutions made a gift of $3,000. The Bridges Foundation gave us $2,000. These gifts will be used where they’re most needed.

Hike ‘n’ Bike 50/50 Team Challenge Fund-raising opportunity for your local charity, youth or school group

The June 14, 2008 annual Hike ‘n’ Bike, is a community-wide fund-raiser. It benefits the Park Foundation and every participating team representing a local charity, youth activity or school group because they can get back half the money they raise. It is an easy, cost-effective way for local groups to raise money, help low-income families access THPRD programs and support their own organization.

“Everyone wins,” says event chair Marilyn Mays. “It’s an ‘A-Thon.’ Participants raise and collect pledges or sponsors. They win prizes - a $10 gift card for every $50 they raise. The team that raises the most money gets a pizza party from Papa’s Pizza. And the person who raises the most money gets all of their $10 gift cards plus a grand prize.”

Mays adds, “The Foundation retains the $10 per-person entry fee and thereafter, every dollar raised is split with the teams that qualify. Our sponsors cover the cost of the event, so all the money raised goes for a charitable cause.”

Hike ‘n’ Bike 50/50 Team Challenge

The online pledge manager makes it easy to raise money. Every person gets their own personal web page. They e-mail their friends, family, neighbors and co-workers who click on a link and go directly to that person’s web page. They can give online, mail in or give their donation directly to the person they are sponsoring. They can check their page daily and see how much they have raised and send thank you e-mails directly from the site. The system is safe and secure.

If the internet is not for you and you want to raise money face to face, we also have packets with everything you will need.

Ready to Enter Your Team?Your team can be composed of five or more people. Just contact Susan Bender Phelps at 503/645-6433. We’ll add your team name to the roster and your teammates can sign up and start their personal page. It is that easy!

Westside Metros Soccer is the Team to Beat

For the past three years, Westside Metros Soccer has been the top fund-raising team. Last year they raised $8,160. For 2008, their goal is to raise $9,000. Cole Hughes, a student at Westside Martial Arts, has raised the most money in each of the past three years. He’s won airline tickets, a Fat Tire bicycle and a $250 shopping spree at the Nike employee store.

Win Valuable PrizesMore than 500 $10 gift cards

have been donated by Joe’s Sports, Outdoors and More; Monteaux’s Public House; Papa’s Pizza; Qdoba Mexican Grill; Starbucks and Sunset Lanes. In addition, 50 pair of Portland Beavers and 50 pair of Portland Timbers tickets have been donated. We are finalizing this year’s grand prizes as this newsletter goes to press. Check in at our Web site for the latest prize news. Prizes will be awarded on the day of the event.

ProgressChanges &More Progress

As proud members of our community, we know you value our THPRD parks and recreation opportunities. We appreciate your passion for our parks and your desire to assure every resident — our families and friends — are able to enjoy them.

The Board of Trustees has undergone some changes recently. Bruce Dalrymple, a former Board Chair and Park District Director, has joined our honorary board. Bruce was key in helping us become a stronger, more vibrant organization. We wish to thank Wayne Whitbeck, a major donor, fund-raiser, and now, past board secretary. Wayne is rejoining the Beaverton Library Foundation. His is a lasting legacy of service that current and future trustees will carry on.

We are more than halfway through the fiscal year and are proud to say we have raised $62,144 so far this year from small grants, individual and corporate donors.

The upcoming Hike ‘n’ Bike has the potential to double that. The THPF Trustees Team plans to give the Westside Metros Soccer Club Team a real run for the title this year. Friendly competition can only help our event be more successful than ever.
