KCNews from D.R. LaRochelle, radio personalityat CKLN Nelson, has it that The LiverpoolFive played the Notre Dame University Dec 9,and that The Headstones, from Vancouver, madethe Nelson scene on Dec. 3. D.R. is pretty con-fident that we'll be hearing a lot from a newgroup known as The Eleventh Commandment.Three members from the old Banff Playboysmoved into Nelson and formed this new impactgroup which will be touring the interior ofBritish Columbia.

The Ugly Ducklings dropped into theCJRL studios in Kenora on their way back fromthe west and were interviewed by Rick Hamilton. They've just released their first Yorktown LP.

Here's your chance to move to a swing-ing giant. CJSP Leamington is looking for ra-dio personalities and newsmen to fill theirnightime operations. Send tapes and resume toLou Tomasi, CJSP Radio, Box 70, Leamington.

Garry Darling will be broadcasting livefrom 4to 6 PM each Wednesday from Brockvillesfamous Tiki Club. First show commences Jan 4.The club has been having a run of great Can-adian talent. Garry notes that he was pleasedto see that The Staccatos are still keeping upwith their image of putting on an outstandingshow. The "Let's Run Away" group played theBrockville area for three days and have an openinvitation to return. Another group that's realpopular are The British Modbeats from St.

Catherines, Writes Garry "They had the patronsof the Tiki Club spellbound with their very poli-

o shed showmanship. Performance -wise I would

have to say that they are the top of the class."

The Bathurst folks were without theirusual morning habit, CKBC, because of a fireat their transmitter site. At 9 AM, Nov. 30, thealarm rang in master control which indicatedthat the station was off the air. The remotecontrol system couldn't rectify matters so engin-eer Paquet hustled over to the transmitter siteand found the coupling house and main tower in

flames. Firemen put the blaze out in minutes

but the equipment suffered extensive damagewhich cut the operating power of CKBC in half. They were back on the air within an hour butwon't be back to full power for a couple ofweeks. Denis Menard flipped the Nancy Sinatrasingle "Sugar Town" and found great reactionto "Summer Wind" which is sung by Nancy's

writer and producer, Lee Hazelwood. Nancysings the melody with him.

Pete Borbely of CHOW Welland has in-corporated an hour featurette in his show knownas "The Nosey Hour". Listeners give him acall and jaw a little (he has a time limit oneach call). Pete finds this gives him a chanceto know the wants of his listeners and besidesthat they enjoy being on the air, which adds tothe drawing power of the station. "GrizzlyBear" by The Youngbloods has been gettinggreat phone reaction at CHOW as has "TalkTalk" by The Music Machine.

A NOTE FROM ED: says, "Tis theseasonto be JOLLY, so cool your column this week, and join in with the rest of us in the Xmasspirit". My only comment is WHO'S GOT THEICE???? Well since it is that time of year, don't read on, because my column will NOTcontain the usual explosive EXPOSE itemsthat I have become famous for!!!!

SCENE AROUND TOWN DEPT: BillGilliland, and Fred White of Yorktown Recordshitting the hit spots in the Village with CHUMlibrarian Sheila Connor. My spies were there, and when this group walked into the Night Owlfor the Staccato performance.....a hush fell overthe house. Ellie says,Hmmmmmnnn!(mainly be-cause that's about all I'd be able to get throughwith!!!)

SPEAKING OF THE STACCATOS....Iwasn't there, but Penelope was, and Penny re-ports a full house and plus plaudits for thisvery talented group. This reporter was toldthat this was one of the BEST groups to everplay Toronto. Toronto groups take note!!!

I HAVE A GOOD MEMORY....and as I

see all these Xmas presents being given toeveryone (which REALLY is a form of payola),I would like to make it clear that I feel that Iam entitled to the cheeseboards, the cheese, the countless tumblers, the ashtrays and thebooze (including the magnets of Champagne)and don't ever ask me for a favour. After allit's not like I'm asking for a payoff or a pieceof your record, and I don't have a company that

produces records, and I don't have a manage-

ment firm, but I feel that like the disc jockeys..my hand should be out.

A RECORD MAN TOLD one of myspies recently that he didn't know why littleletters were appearing behind the record num-bers on orders from dealers. Possibly thisgentleman should get a subscription to RPM,

and find out where the industry is AT!!!!IS IT TRUE THAT one of the most

important people in the industry has a grouparound him that have been instructed to keep

THANKS FOR THE SPINS

iScason'sGratings

THE PAUPERS

certain people at least four feet away from him.His friends feel that it will avert a lot of trouble.Among his friends he has the nickname "OnePunch".

EXPOSE!!! Who was last years "ManOf The Year" in the RPM Awards, and why wasthis information SUPPRESSED.... from the

readers. I will NOW TELL. By a landslide vote,RPM's editor won hands down in this categoryand to the embarrassment of all of us on thestaff of RPM. No one had thought of warningthe trade that the editor COULDN'T POSSIBLYbe eligible in his own poll. Quickly a new cate-gory was substituted for this one, and "ManOf The Year" was dropped. NOW...I feel that I

should make it emphatically clear, that theEDITORIAL STAFF of RPM is not eligible, soDON'T....DON'T vote for Walt, Penny or myselfin ANY of the categories. BUT.... Please vote. You'll be getting your ballots early in January.

DON'T EVER THINK that the new 12by 17 RPM isn't being greeted with great en-thusiasm. It is!!!! The industry is a -buzz withthe news of a bigger RPM, and a jock told me(personally) that he thought it was the greatestthing that ever happened to the radio business. This will be a consumer mag that will talk upthe Canadian jocks from coast to coast as wellas the dealers and record men. The edition isdue out Jan 2nd, but I think personally you

won't see it 'til the 3rd. That's the day it willbe premiered in Toronto and with a BIG

SPLASH I hear.

NO...MY COLUMN WON'T CHANGE!! I

will still be writing my usual Big Scoop column, but it will be bigger and will contain even moregossipy little tidbits.

The very touchy subject of "sick" re-cords has to enter my column, and I want to

say that I don't approve of take -offs on retardedpeople on disc. I feel that it is in very BAD

taste. I think there is sufficient talent in Can-ada that we don't have to stoop that low, andif anyone has such an idea for a disc...I suggestthey forget it. Let us exert a more wholesomeapproach to recordmaking. Let us work towardcombating such things....not exploiting them, for profit. I think I have made myself clear.

May Iwish all of you a very Merry Xmas..

and a successful Centennial Year. We hopethat YOU are as excited about next year as

WE are at RPM.

Well, HOWDY. I should start this column withone of those Elvira-type exposes. I just wantto ask the question what west coast basedCOWBOY singer's publishing company refuseda Canadian producer, mechanical rights, andsince it was a Xmas tune, WAS THIS in the truespirit of Christmas? I don't know if they allowme to name the COWBOY SINGER, but I willcheck with Cousin Ed: and print it next week.OH! I should also ask if this gesture was on thelevel, or was it just an UNCANADIAN move??(Ed: Do you mean ANTI -CANADIAN?)

Nice Id hear trom our cousin Hank.

Secord at CKRM in Regina writes to tell methat he feels the Capitol folks are leaning onthe wrong side of the new Diane Leigh single."Two Shades of Blue" is the favoured side inRegina. Well it just goes to prove that Dianemust have two very strong sides. Play themboth. Hank also tells me that the Regina basedSoundaround Records will have some countrygoodies in the New Year. Also a few Reginaraves for the Irwin Prescott waxing of "ChewTobacco Rag". Thank you Hank for the goodwestern words. Let's hear more from the west.

Up in Aylmer, Ontario, Bruce Shaver, ofBison Records, sends along some notes on thenew Odie Workman record that has been released

for Bison by Sparton. The side is "Take ThisHeart Of Mine", and it is already showing upon my chart. Bruce mentions that CJOB-FM andCHOK are just a few stations that are program-ming Odie's record. How about you other cousinsjumping on the haywagon? Something I didn'tknow was that Steve Glenn of CHOK Sarnia waspicked No. 1 Country disc jockey for 1966'67.Congratulations Steve.

If any of you are interested in joiningan association that promotes country music andall Canadian music, you should drop a note toAPCM, 102 Avenue Road, Toronto. They'll putyou on the mailing list for all the information. If you believe in Canadian country music, youshould join up.

That Melbourne single by Bob King,"Working On The Country Road" is really star-ting to get the spins. Bill Sweet's "Town andCountry" playlist gives it a whopping big No. 1.

Well, Russ Vernon is fed up with what'sbeen going on in the Calgary and area countryscene and he's heading for the U.S. So if yourecord folks have been sending Russ, new re-leases. STOP. Russ tells me it's a real sadscene in Calgary. There's only 334 hours ofcountry picking and that's from a six stationcity. Ellie tells me Calgary is having problemswith the teen sounds as well. What's going onin the home of the world's greatest Stampede?

Bill Pudifin sends news from CFGM ofthe great success they are having with Can-adian country talent. Besides including thenew discs on their regular playlists, they arealso presenting a Canadian talent hour everySaturday at 8 PM. The hour is made up of twosegments, the first is a half hour of Canadiancountry singers and instrumentalists, on record;the second is devoted to live Canadian talent. They feature a different guest artist every weekbacked by a live band. This is the second of a13 week presentation. On the completion of thefirst series, CFGM supplied listeners with afine photo brochure of the artists that had ap-peared on the series. The Country Gentlemen

have been programming "Gonna Catch MyBreath" from the new Jimmy James Arc album,"With A Song For You". Reaction has beengood and Bill feels it has great single potential.

USAThe Mae West legend has been bolstered byanother great album which makes two in the oneyear. Her first "Way Out West", on Capitolbrought Miss West to the attention of the teen-agers with meterial like "Shout" and "Day-tripper". Her latest, "Wild Christmas" whichwas also produced by David Mallet, is again amasterpiece of bringing the blues, rock and thetwenties closer together. Miss West, now 74,takes on the old Presley number "Santa BringMy Baby Back To Me" and does it as if it werewritten for her. Other selections include "SantaBaby", "My New Years Resolutions" and "PutThe Loot In The Boot, Santa". Although it's alittle late for this Christmas, the album will nodoubt become an evergreen. This album is notavailable in Canada but you can send for one toDragonet Records Inc. 1800 No. Argyle, Holly-wood California 90028. UKThe BEACH BOYS have just left Britain aftera whirlwind tour of this island which fans willnot for get for some time to come. The boyswill likely be back here next year.

Another top act to set Britain on firewas the FOUR TOPS who did a two performanceonly visit to London two weeks ago. The successof this group is a tribute to the general successof the TAMLA MOTOWN sound in Britain.

Meanwhile in New York, DUSTY'SPRINGFIELD'S opening night at Basin Streetwas marred due to the reported dispute betweenband leader BUDDY RICH and Dusty over topbilling. Dusty's contract reportedly has her asundisputed top billing, but Mr. Rich obviouslyfelt this was an injustice to himself and he isreported to have made a mess of the big open-ing by keeping Dusty waiting for 2'2 hourswhile he introduced celebrities in the audienceand by apparently refusing Dusty proper re-hearsal time with the orchestra. From what wecan gather though, press reviews were full ofpraise for Dusty despite the messed up opening.

YEAR END EDITORIAL

Perhaps this would be a good time to look backon the past three years and what has happenedto the Canadian music industry. Three yearsago, the Canadian public seldom heard a Can-adian -made record. Their entire interest wasfocused on the great U.S. record productioncentres. England was only brewing up the stormthat was to come. Canada was practically stand-ing still in the record business. A few artistswere buying their backgrounds in Nashville. The $1.98 Canadian country "quickies" weremaking a dollar or two, and occasionally a local"hit" would rear its head and sell a couple ofthousand.

Today, Canadian record buyers are look-ing to Canadian recording artists as stars. Ifyou have any doubts about this (as I have hadup until recently) then you would be most in-terested in the reaction to the RPM 100 chart(which promotes domestic product and reportson Canadian music) and the great interest in

the RPM Starline Photo Album. Today, RPM isbeing subscribed to by teenagers who,two yearsago , didn't know nor cared less about who theCanadian stars were.

It is doubtful that Canadian programmersor record companies can fully appreciate whathas happened, and the potential of the bomb weare sitting on. The Canadian music industry isripe. It is far bigger than we can appreciate. Ifgiven the opportunity, Canadian artists andCanadian recordings could make a major break-through into the international market. The soundwas always here Constantly there have beengood producers making great records with goodCanadian compositions. The artist who, today, walks into a studio is a better musician in manycases than many of his foreign counterparts.Less bad product comes out of Canada thanmany other countries. Canada still experiencesthe "rush into the studio" productions, but

more and more experienced people are lookingafter the A&R functions and more and moreCanadian recordings are becoming "in demand"for world release.

In '67 the eyes of the world will turn toCanada. Our Centennial year will make it easierto interest the world in Canadian music. Thenewly formed Association for the Promotion ofCanadian Music will do a great deal to bally-hoo our domestic product. The Centennial andExpo themes will be broadcast throughout theworld. Canada's newly equipped and modernrecording studios will assist in creating aneven better sound. In its growing pains, the in-dustry has found reason to unite to fight for itssurvival and the results will be beneficial.

As a further indication of the forwardmove, RPM has grown into a consumer magazine.Soon the story of the artists, the disc jockey, the record man and the entire industry will beknown by the record buyer. Your RPM ads willreach out to thousands. There is no doubt....theindustry is ON THE WAY,"
