ABOUT ME
Nermin Habib I 02812621 I Final Review Spring 2016
On most days, I’m starry eyed with my head in the clouds, but on the occasional descent to planet earth I find myself functioning in that grey matter which lives right in the middle of the left and right hemispheres of my brain.
They say grey matter is where all the “stuff” happens. I find that to be true. A constant dance between structure and chaos, the logic and the irrational, function and design, words and images, greyscale and colour. It’s when these fast moving neurons cannon into one another, that flying sparks snap into insight and creativity.
You see, creative strategy is not just something I do, it is something that consumes the way see the world. I’m addicted to building bridges between people, ideas and feelings, which compels observe at relationships in color and dimension.
I love making connections between seemingly unconnected events, and accept that which cannot be fully explained using logic.
The rule of thirds, sarcasm and sunshine, I absolutely can’t live without.
I find that regularly just, pausing to appreciate my surroundings is essential for mining insights, starting conversations and discovering exciting ways to communicate with people.
So, on most days, when I’m starry eyed with my head in the clouds, creativity lifts me. But on the occasional descent to planet earth, strategy grounds me.
Hi, I’m Nermin.

PORTFOLIO
Nermin Habib I 02812621 I Final Review Spring 2016
After my Mid Point Review, I focused on learning a lot about cinematography and visual expression. I learned to use it as a capturing storytelling tool.
The following collection of work explores a journey of how film making has strengthened and diversified my creative expression.

CAIRO SOUL
Cairo's soul is unique. It has a flavour, warmth and a rhythm that captivates people who experience it. Using varying camera techniques, I wanted to capture a glimpse of it by visually interpreting a calmness in all the noise, spirituality in humbleness, beauty where it is least expected and pride in the strength and resilience that people carry within them.
Music Track: Egyptian Project - Album "Ya Amar" Music Director & Composer : Jérôme Ettinger Sayed Emam : Singer and Kawala Salama Metwally : Violin Ragab Sadek : Percussions Carlos Robles Arenas : Drum Camille Momper : Cello

SACRED GEOMETRY
I love using photography as a medium to express emotion and ideas. The concept is to create a series of portraits of a young mother and her 4 year old son visualising their precious mother - son relationship using sacred geometry ratios. The subjects of the photographs are my dear friend Donya and her son Yousef.

THE PROCESS
Using transparencies, I created several diagrams to use as a guide in front of the camera when shooting. I printed the diagrams on projector transparencies and reinforced the edges of the sheets with cardboard to give them a frame like grip.
I used the diagrams to help mark the best positions for taking a certain shot.
I needed to take at least 20 shots of each scene in order to get the composition as accurate as possible.
I then cropped the images to fit the various ratios I used during the shoot.

URBANIA
Urban living has its own rhythm. Sometimes it feels freeing, other times constraining. It is filled with spaces, symbols, patterns, forms and shapes that are man-made and designed to communicate a message. It all becomes a language we speak, and an environment we absorb.
Using time-lapse techniques and camera movements, Urbania captures an unspoken language that we interact with on a daily basis.
Shot in Bahrain with the talented Cinematographer, Mazen Adel
Music: My Elegant Redemption by Tim McMorris

SOUND DESIGN
A fun group project shared with Laura Gonzalez and Paula Saslow.
This piece demonstrates sound design for motion pictures. We chose a clip from the infamous Paddington movie, stripped out all of the sound, and recreated it using our own recordings, mixing, music selection, and VO.

A short piece showcasing “who I am” in a not so traditional video CV. I wanted to create a piece that put my cinematography skills into use by telling a story about my character and work process.
