Greetings!
On the weekend we heard the story of the Ascension
and Jesus’ promise to be with us always. As we
prepare for Pentecost Sunday we are reminded of
our mission as baptised catholics to be disciples of
Jesus.
As part of our weekly theme the children have been
asked to think about what they can we do at home
to show that they are a disciple of Jesus? This is not
meant to be a “heavy” conversation. I hope the
children know that disciples show how to live a
Christian life by example. No one is perfect and we
all make mistakes. I have seen some wonderful
examples in the last week of children leading by
example and offering forgiveness and friendship
even though they have been hurt by the actions of
others. I am sure that you see this in family situations
as well.
Congratulations to Tamara B (Year Six) who is our
Student Principal for a Day. Student Principal For a
Day is a national event and our school is participating
this year for the first time. Tamara has been on duty
with me this morning, visited some classrooms, had
morning tea with the staff, had an interview with the
local newspaper, interviewed some children about
OLOR and assisted some students with their reading.
I hope that Tamara has had an enjoyable day filled
with a different type of learning.
Best wishes,
John Spradbrow

Rugby League Gala Day
If you thought last week’s State of Origin was exciting, then you missed seeing both our Under 10 and Open Rugby League teams take to the field last Friday. Both teams blasted the opposition off the park in their first games at the Parramatta Eels North Gala Day, with Thomas S, Ryan C, Luke B and Noah H scoring for the Under 10’s while Harrison D scored a quadrella, handsomely backed up by 2 tries from Noah C (new to League) and one from Tommy F. What a start. …Unfortunately in game 2 the wheels wobbled and fell off both teams. The Under 10’s were convincingly beaten but not before we witnessed a second half, rampaging run and try from Edmond C and another display of blistering speed and talent from Ryan C. The Senior team lost by the narrowest of margins, 2 tries to one…..with Tommy F starring for OLOR again. It was a great day, with some obviously very talented boys who played league on the field, but it is always fantastic to witness those
who have never played - SHINE and there were some extremely
promising league players of the future.
Lets hope though that OLOR’s second game doesn’t send an omen of what will happen in Game 2 of Origin! A massively huge thank you to both Mr Mooney and Mr Traynor for giving up their Wednesday afternoons this term and skipping work duties on Friday to be with the boys. I hope everyone enjoyed the experience!.
PAVe
Preventing Anxiety and Victimisation through education Your school principal has agreed for your school to take part in PAVe, an exciting new research project taking place in NSW and WA primary schools. The purpose of the project is to evaluate two interventions that enhance students’ social and emotional learning and foster the prevention of bullying behaviours (Friendly Schools Plus and Cool Kids: Taking Control). Grades 3 and 4 students are being invited to participate by completing a confidential survey on four occasions over the next three years. Your school will implement Friendly Schools Plus. A parent and student information letter and consent form for the project has recently been sent home with students in Grades 3 and 4. Parents in these grades are asked to discuss this project with their son or daughter and submit the consent form online via
PAVe Parent Information and Consent Form OR return the completed consent form to their child’s teacher BY 6 June 2014. Further information about the PAVe project can be found at http://www.centreforemotionalhealth.com.au/pages/PAVe.aspx
PARLIAMENT AND CIVICS
EDUCATION REBATE (PACER)
Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
LIBRARY LOOK
It would be greatly appreciated if parents could send in used
shopping plastic bags to the library to assist when children
are borrowing at school. Thank you
MONEY TREE
Father Joe has asked the children of OLOR and St Angela’s to assist with
the Parish Dinner Dance by helping to build a Money Tree or perhaps
several money trees.
The money tree or trees will be part of the prizes at the Parish Dinner
Dance in July. All the proceeds from the Dinner Dance are going towards
the church renovations.
Father Joe is asking if each family can bring in at least one Scratchy
Lottery ticket. The lottery ticket can be placed in the envelope provided
and sent into the school as soon as possible please.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
SCHOOL ANSWERING MACHINE Please be aware that if you need to change your child’s going home arrangements for the day, please refrain from leaving a message on the school answering machine. While messages are checked on a daily basis, we may not be able to guarantee the information is relayed to your child in sufficient time prior to going home. Thank you for your assistance with this important issue.
