I feel that this happens a lot in education, that we fail to acknowledge something based on our ownbiases.

I like that he said he didn't reject his grandparents and their language, but wanted to include his mother. Why couldn't his mother also learn the language?

Maybe his parents should have focused on making him learn the language, so that he would later nothave regret. I know that as children we do not understand this concept. While mine wasn't language, Ihave a similar experience. I learned the violin because my parents wanted me to, and they didn't let mequit when I wanted. So I played for 10 years, and then when I graduated high school I quit. I now regretthat I quit, but I can at least look back at the 10 years I played and cherish that.

Kids are mean, but when it is done by a teacher that soreness sticks with you forever. Mine wasn't overa classroom assignment, but a teacher that read a personal notebook outloud to classes I wasn't evenin because he thought it would be funny.

This is unfair of the teacher, especially since this boy was nothing but a child. However, looking at thehistorical context, in 1970 it was a very different America than we live in now.

Unfortunately, I still see this happen all the time still. Teachers give up on students simply because theyact out. This is when children need us the most.

I have never believed that there is a right way to learn, but I think it is important to be learners in someway.
