Last week's cancelled 1st XV gameWith heavy hearts we were forced to cry-off the 1st XV game -v- Maidstone in the Intermediate Cup. The rules of the competition say that FIVE front row players must be on the Match Card. We didn't have five registered front row available (injured/working/away etc) so we forfeited the game.

Warlingham welcomed London Media to Hamsey Green on Saturday, along with a tirade of horizontal rain. The usual strict warm up routine was disrupted due to the weather whilst Warlingham took cover in the changing room. Braving the elements the players (and referee) emerged with 15 minutes until kick off to limber up.

It was Media who took the game to Warlingham in the opening stages, with repeat infringements for offside coupled with some Louis Walsh esc decision making from the vastly experienced referee, giving media a number of consecutive penalties. It was from one of these that they controversially went for goal, but with a monstrous boot their kicker slotted the 3 points.

This rallied the Warly troops, and they embarked on an attacking mission from the kick off. Big hits from Chitts, Milky, and Wiseman resulted in turn over ball, and the Warly forwards power house rolled into action. Some tight phases bossed by Murtz at scrum half combined with some booming ball carries from Thomas and Moley resulted in a scrum to Warly near the media line. Cox picked at 8 and flopped over the line for the first score. Kearney converted from a tight angle. 7-3.

Spirits were raised and the tempo increased. Forwards took control with relentless phases of short play battering the Media defence, which to their credit held strong. The referee was becoming increasingly involved, keeping an excellent handle on proceedings. When the ball went wide the backs had the space to do what they do best - allow the forwards the pleasure of another scrum. Media held their own in the scrum, with a great battle in the front row emerging. From a scrum near the media line Cox picked and went (again) and popped back inside to Kieran the beast. With nimble footwork and some scything sidesteps he danced his way over for another score. 14-7.

Warly were ready to regroup at this stage, and the referee kindly obliged with the half time whistle. After the break Halliwell rang the changes, with a number of pairs of 'fresh legs' coming onto the field. The game continued in a similar form, although media’s tails were up with some big boshes in midfield. Once the forwards had made inroads with a particularly dynamic phase of play, the backs exploited the space and went wide. It was during one of these excursions wide that Skinner found a hole and zipped through. His spray on shorts gave him the aerodynamic advantage, and he whizzed over for a well deserved try. 19-3.

Media decided enough was enough and embarked on a ferocious attack on the home sides line. Wave after wave of relentless ball carries slowly edged them towards the white wash. The Warly D held strong with some try saving tackles from wingers Downie-Keen and Amos combined with some disruptive rucking by Stephenson in the loose. Eventually the stellar guard was broken - the brutal onslaught reaped the rewards of a try for media. The referee decided to render the TMO redundant and awarded the try - nothing less than media deserved. 19-8.

Media suffered an injury in midfield, and in the true spirit of the game (and having been subbed by his own team) Murtz took the field in the oppo's shirt to even the numbers. In the very next phase of play, media looked to use their once dynamic and powerful midfield. As the ball arrived at the new centre he looked left, only to see the onrushing Warly defence. Like an elephant charge the D was upon him, with Skinner taking the honour of engulfing the borrowed centre in a barnstorming hit. We are very diverse at Hamsey Green, doesn't matter who you are or what colour your shirt is, we will bosh you.

As the game drew to a close and legs tired in what had been an epic contest, Warly snuck over for another try. Some open play left a gap for Skinner to put on the after burners and prance through for another. 24-8.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable game - thanks to all who played in a hard fought and very proud victory for Halliwell's Hero's. Thanks must go to London Media for a great game, followed by enjoying beers together watching the boks beat the kiwis in the bar. Oh, and the referee who was as agile, dynamic, and charismatic as ever.

We look forward to the return fixture on Clapham Common.

Outlined below is the Club’s updated Social Media Policy(this is now also published on the website under ‘Policies and Procedures’ on the INFO tab)

This policy is designed to provide helpful, practical advice to members in respect of using social media effectively and positively. As a club we encourage the responsible use of social media.

The club realises that social media has become increasingly popular in recent years, because it allows people to connect in the online world instantly. It can be hugely beneficial in disseminating information about the Rugby Club and/or specific age-groups. It is also a popular forum for developing personal and business relationships. It can take many different forms, including internet forums, internet blogs, social blogs, podcasts, pictures and video. There are a wide range of platforms that the term ‘social media’ relates to. However, the Club recognises that the most popular channels currently used are – Twitter, Facebook and to a lesser extent YouTube.

The Club recognises that we all live in a society that promotes free speech and freedom of expression, but we would caution that anything that you write has the potential to enter the public domain. Consequently, we would request that all social media commentary relating to Warlingham RFC is of a positive nature - please think carefully before making comments that may lead to unintended consequences.

Any grievance, criticism or resentment should be directed in person to the individual or respective managers or coaches. Matters of a more serious or contentious nature should be discussed with the Club’s Committee. We would request that you refrain from any negative comments about, players, parents, coaches, managers, referees, clubs, etc.

We would request that you avoid gossip, slanderous comments, disruptive comments, threatening comments, and anything that could be construed as abusive, harassing, obscene, libellous, or an invasion of another’s privacy (this includes text, audio, photographs and video). Whilst the club realises that a certain amount of ‘banter’ may take place on some forums, we would request that any language used is moderated, please remember that these forum can be viewed by a range of age groups from both genders; if you wouldn’t use that language in your own home then it should not be appearing in the public domain. If a negative comment is made, we would ask you not to comment on it either way, or to escalate an issue.

Serious instances of irresponsible use of social media platforms associated with Warlingham Rugby Club may be referred to the Committee. Any action taken by the committee will be judged on a case by case basis. We therefore request that you use social media outlets positively.

Be responsible, share your achievements, celebrate success, be gracious in defeat, be honest, and enjoy communicating and interacting.
