So you have been asked to be a Parents’ Council
representative, but what does that really mean?
Your role will include:
• Advocating for African American students in your school
• Sharing information presented at PC meetings and on
The Parents’ Council listserve
• Serving as a Liaison between school and parents
• Connecting parents with services presented at PC meetings
• Attending monthly PC meetings
• Referring parents with a concern to our Parents’ Council Advisors
• Planning/supporting activities for AA parents and students at your
school. (You can partner with other schools in your cluster when
planning events.)
You are not alone- Stay in touch with Advisors and
Cluster reps!
You are expected to be a member of the NAACP.

Find out how to get budget dollars from PTA or do fundraisers
Need to be a paid member of the PTA
Need to get your committee listed on the school’s web site and PTA web site
with your contact information
Need to know their school office/Principal/administrative weekly deadline

Plan to meet with your Principal/ Staff Member about school goals

Back to School Night is your best opportunity
Call your school to find out the date of Back to School Night
Partner with your principal
Contact your PTA President to request a table, create an eye catching display if possible to include tablecloth, mints, etc. ☺
On your table, have contact information
If you have already planned your events for the year, make sure to have copies of your calendar available
If you have not planned your events for the year, take this opportunity to designate your first meeting to get other parents “on board.” In other words, set up a first meeting and advertise it at Back to School Night.
On your table, have a sign-up sheet for parents to join your PC group.
This sign-up sheet should be used to create an email list to use to send PC updates, monthly PC newsletter, meeting notes, and more…
Work with other parents (or older students) in shifts to always “cover” the table.

Create an Edline account- There is a new online system for parents coming. So please watch for updates
Check student monitoring system on a daily basis.
Keep track of your student’s grades and missing assignments.
Daily homework assignments, notes, and review sheets.
Have older students make checking grades a part of his/her homework routine
Communicate (daily)with your student to monitor their progress in class.
Check on upcoming assessments and current homework assignments.
