IntroductionsPurpose of Meeting

◦The general intent of tonight’s meeting is to make students and parents aware of the obligations that must be met in order to have the privilege of participating in interscholastic athletics.

Applies to students in grades 7-12 during the current school year (or the start of summer practices).

Record expunged in 9th grade Consequences relating to Athletics (school

consequences may also apply).◦ 1st Offense: out 1 year, with possible early return◦ 2nd Offense: out 1 year, no early return◦ 3rd Offense: out permanently

OHSAA requirement: passing grade (D or higher) in minimum of 5 classes in preceding quarter. Summer school grades not permitted.

FHSD requirement: minimum grade point average of 1.7 in preceding quarter.

Semester and/or Final grades do NOT apply. Eligibility to be earned prior to participation. Eligibility reviewed at end of each academic

quarter.

Must be present in school minimum ½ day (lunch is the guideline) day of participation.

Must actively participate in PE & related activities.

Individual coach will provide & review team attendance procedures.

NOTE: No practices or contests when school is closed due to inclement weather.

During the Nagel sport season, student-athletes may NOT play the same sport on a non-school team, i.e. JO volleyball, Kiwanis basketball, travel softball, etc.

After the season, Nagel student-athletes MAY participate on non-school teams, but with limits, i.e. # of Nagel student-athletes.

Unrestricted non-school participation may take place between June 1-July 31 each year.

Athletic Trainer provided by Wellington Sports Medicine

Visits 2x/week Tues, 3:30-4:30p & Thurs, 3-4p.

Present at all HOME football, wrestling, and track & field contests.

Concussion Management

“Any athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion (such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion or balance problems) shall be immediately removed from the contest and shall not return to play until cleared with written authorization by an appropriate health care professional.” (NFHS Rules Book)

Student will NOT return to participation the same day. Must have WRITTEN authorization for Return to Play (RTP). http://ohsaa.org/medicine/AuthorizationToReenter.pdf

Students (FB & VB) will undergo pre-season ImPACT baseline testing.

Role of Coaches◦Coaches are to review & know the signs and

symptoms of concussion and to prohibit any athlete who displays these signs or symptoms from participating in a practice or contest.

◦The coach will be required to complete an online concussion education course.

◦Coaches are not medical professionals and have no authority to determine whether or not a student has sustained a concussion. The coach is responsible for notifying the student’s parents & recommending a referral to a medical professional.
