Coming Soon...Town of Nahant Census Forms

In January, Town Clerks are required, by Massachusetts General Laws,to send a census form to all households in the cities and towns. It is im-perative that you fill out this form and return it to the Town Hall promptly.

During the Presidential election, it became quite evident that, manyresidents do not send back their census forms. As stated on the censusform, “Failure to respond to this mailing will result in removal from theactive voting list and may result in removal from the voter registrationrolls.”

If you have moved, you will need to register to vote again, at your newaddress. There are forms to register to vote available in the Town Clerk’soffice; or when applying for, or renewing, a driver’s license, you can com-plete a voter registration application.

Locally, it is important to return your census form promptly and accu-rately filled out, as the Town uses this population information for manyreasons, some of which include:

1. To qualify for federal and state funding;2. Children may not be allowed to attend school, if they are not listed

on the census. The school needs this information to plan for future classsizes;

3. Nahant beach parking stickers will not be issued, unless your nameis listed on the Town census, or proof of residency is made available;

4. Dog licenses are issued annually and must be renewed. Please listyour dog on the census. If you do not receive a dog license form with yourcensus, please call the clerk’s office.

The census information not only impacts the Town, it has an impact atthe state level. The number of state representatives that the Commonwealthof Massachusetts has at the State House and in Washington is directlyrelated to the population.

So, when you receive your census in the mail in January, do not put itaside and forget about it. Please mail it back immediately, accurately re-flecting all household members and dogs. If you do not receive a censusform, please call the clerk’s office and request that one be sent to you.

If you have any questions, please call Harriet Steeves, Town Clerk,781-581-0018.

Letter to the Editor:

On behalf of everyone at Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS), I amwriting to express my deepest thanks to Spud’s Restaurant, in Saugus, which, once again this year, opened its doors to those in need, on Thanksgiv-ing Day, providing as many as 650 delicious turkey dinners to people in ourcommunity, who would otherwise not have eaten—-or eaten alone-—onThanksgiving Day. It is a massive, incredibly generous effort, that is under-taken each year by employees of Spuds, their families and friends.

We are particularly grateful to Spud’s for providing the 285 “Meals onWheels,” that were delivered by volunteers, on Thanksgiving morning, tohomebound and isolated seniors in Lynn, Lynnfield, Nahant, Saugus, andSwampscott. This was almost 75 more meals than were delivered lastyear—a record number for us. Thanks also to the staff in GLSS’ NutritionDepartment, for working with Spud’s, to coordinate this important effort,Lindley Food Service, for donating the desserts, and all the volunteers whogave up time, during their holiday, to make a difference in the lives of oth-ers.

It is gratifying to see that Spud’s, despite the difficult economy and inresponse to the growing needs among people all around us, continued thiswonderful tradition and very generous gesture this year. May their selflessaction be an inspiration to all of us, this holiday season.

Happy New Year, Nahant!

Q. Last winter was very icy and I did not want to go outside. How canI feel more secure walking outside in winter weather conditions?

A. Black ice and a fresh snowfall can be very unsafe situations for allages. Preparation for winter weather is one of the ways to prevent winteraccidents. Listening to weather forecasts and reports and spreading ice meltafter driveways, walkways and sidewalks have been cleared, is another wayto help prevent falls in the winter. There are some assistive devices whichprovide more traction to shoes and canes, which may provide increasedstability in snow and ice. Attachments for canes are available at medicalsupply stores and consist of a removable device, which attaches to the tip ofthe cane. The prongs flip up and down and grab onto the walking surface, when the prongs have been lowered. There are some attachments for shoesand boots, which may provide additional traction. Some of these footwearattachments are called Yak Trax, Icetrax Pro and stabilicers. You will be ableto find these devices in catalogs, such as LL Bean,www.firststreetonline.com, www. Campmor.com and Dick’s Sporting Goodstores. There are also several web sites to select from, if you Google the wordYak Trax.

If you are unsure of walking outside in the snow and ice, stay indoorsuntil the storm passes and walkways and driveways are shoveled and thesnow and ice have melted down. Ask for help from friends, relatives andneighbors, if you are unable to shovel and can not get outside to spread theice melt. The high school in Marblehead has a list of student volunteers whoare willing to assist with snow shoveling.

Remember, going outside in unsafe weather conditions, may not beworth the risk of fallingand spending an entirewinter recovering froma fractured hip, shoulderor wrist. Think beforeleaving the house, askfor help, stock up onfood and ice melt beforeeach storm. Leave yourhome only if necessaryand if you feel safe towalk, in the existingweather conditions.

Tackling Seat Belt SafetyBy Colonel Mark F. Delaney

Despite all the evidence that seat belts canprevent serious injury, or death, in an automobilecrash, more than 30 percent of Massachusettsmotorists still don’t heed that warning.

Seatbelt use is important for motorists of anyage, but among the most disturbing trends, is thatcompliance among teens, already below the stateaverage, fell by 10 percent, this year. It is trou-bling, that young people who embrace safety inother areas, fail to grasp the simple fact, that aseatbelt can make the difference between life anddeath.

Consider that high school football players, whose seasons are nearing their climax withThanksgiving games, would not line up to block,or tackle, the opposition without wearing a hel-met. And what parent would let a child take thefield without proper protective gear?

But too many young motorists and theirparents ignore one of the smartest safety decisionsany person can make. It only takes a second toclick a belt – a second that can prevent a life frombeing changed forever. When a car is involved ina crash, everyone inside, who is not secured witha belt, is at risk of being thrown into the dash-board, or windshield, ejected from the car, orthrown into other people inside the vehicle.

Every traffic death is a tragedy. No oneknows this better than state troopers, who havegone to far too many homes in the middle of thenight, to tell far too many parents that their childhas been killed in a crash. What makes theseevents even more tragic, is that in many of thoseinstances, seat belts could have saved those lives.

As part of an effort to promote seat belt use,the Massachusetts State Police and local policedepartments will encourage and enforce seat beltuse, during this fall’s “Click It or Ticket” mobili-zation, which runs through November 30th. Aspart of the campaign, made possible with grantfunding from the state’s Executive Office ofPublic Safety and Security, the State Police willroll 464 extra, four-hour patrols across the stateand when officers stop motorists for any motorvehicle offense, or violation, they will be check-ing to see if the car’s occupants are belted.

This message is never “out of season,” but itis worth noting, that at this time of year, holidayshopping and travel increases congestion on road-ways, which, in turn, increases the chances of adriver being in a crash. Our advice during this, and every, time of year is simple: Take a momentand put on your seat belt whenever you get in acar, a decision for which we all can be thankful.

Colonel Mark F. Delaney is superintendent ofthe Massachusetts State Police.

Nahanter Matt Risch Takes Role in A Bewitching Switch

“Christian Hoff, a Tony Award-winning actor, has withdrawn from the comingBroadway revival of Rodgers and Hart’s Pal Joey and has been replaced by his under-study, Matthew Risch,” the New York Times announced in its Arts section on Tuesday,November 25. The character of Joey Evans, previously played onstage by Gene Kellyand in film by Frank Sinatra, is expected to be a breakthrough role, the article contin-ued.

The Playbill website, under the headline “A Bewitching Switch” stated:“As in showbiz fables of yore, a newcomer is taking over a broadway lead, after a

star’s injury. Understudy, Matthew Risch, according to the actor’s spokesperson andthe producer, will permanently step into the title role of Pal Joey, replacing TonyAward-winner Christian Hoff... The new, revised revival of the 1940 musical byRichard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart...focuses on a Chicago nightclub hoofer with dreams ofowning his own joint. His ticket to that goal is a rich, married lady (played by Tony-winner Stockard Channing) who is famously “bewitched, bothered and bewildered”by hiM... Tony nominee, Martha Plimpton plays a club performer.

Another article, dated November 26, stated: “In a time-honored show-biz tradi-tion, the understudy is taking over for the injured Broadway star… The classic storyof an understudy taking over for the star is 42nd Street, particularly the 1933 filmversion in which little Peggy Sawyer, played by Ruby Keeler, replaces the injuredstar, portrayed by Bebe Daniels.”

Matthew, who grew up at 405 Nahant Road, went to the performing arts highschool, Walnut Hill School, in Natick. He then attended the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, which has a respectedmusical theatre program. He appeared as Carlos in Broadway’s Legally Blonde and was Sgt. Fogarty and Fred Casely inBroadway’s Chicago.

Bob Risch and his wife, Nancy, explained that they felt Matt had a future in theater when, at the age of 10, after seeing Phan-tom of The Opera, he replicated the production in their barn, with neighborhood children, (Kristian Laliberte, Maika Foukal,Emily and David Carter, and Matt). The production included music, lighting, smoke machines, and trap doors. “It was very cold,”

his father remembered, “Matt made the tickets, sold the tickets, played thePhantom and more or less directed the effort. God bless the neighbors whosat in that freezing barn and watched.”

As to the recent developments, Bob says, “This is a huge opportunity forMatt. He’s been working toward this for a long time. He’s the first one thereand the last one to leave. It’s a great example of working hard and puttingyourself in the best position to step in, if you get the chance. I told him thereweren’t any buttons left on my shirt, I was so proud of him, they’d all poppedoff.” The opening is Dec. 18th, at Broadway’s Studio 54, in New York City.

Have a Happy…New Year!By Georgia Arnold

Each year, as the year ends and a new one rolls around, I look back on theyear I’ve had. We could catalogue 2008 in so many ways—the economy, anew president—to name a few. I consider myself to be some what of adreamer. When I look back on the year that I’ve had, I tend to think of thethings I wish, I would have done:

The visa to Norway I never got, saving up to go to Dubai, applying to lawschool, the book I want to write that’s still on the back burner and winning thelottery, of course…hmm the lottery yes…that’s at the top of the list for sure.

Then there are the standard annual resolutions I make, as January firstdraws nearer: Lose weight (aka go to gym), Save more (aka no more unneces-sary trips to TJ Maxx), Read more (aka less reality television and magazinesdon’t count)and Volunteer (which ties into fewer trips to the Maxx and lessTV). These tend to be the standard culprits.

As I started piecing together my goals for the New Year and thoughtabout all the changes that have taken place personally, and also for the coun-try, I thought to myself, “Maybe, this year, my New Year’s Resolution wouldbe: to be happy right where I am. Maybe this year, I can appreciate how luckyI am and where I am, right here, right now.”

New Year’s Resolutions, Again!By Sallee Slagle, Director, Dance Dimensions [[email protected]]

Wow! It’s time to start another New Year! Most of us use this occasion tomake new resolutions, or renew some personal goals. What a great idea, theconcept of a fresh start, a time to change your life and your lifestyle for thebetter. We’ve all had ideas and made resolutions in the past, that went alongfine, for a while, but then old ways or possibly other ideas slowed our mo-mentum. We may even have given up. So how do we truly get a new start thisyear?

First, we have to decide that it is truly a fresh start and forgive any pastfailures we may have had. If you are tackling something you have tackledbefore, this can makes the whole process seem discouraging, right from thebeginning. Don’t give up. Try again. It must be important, so make that reso-lution one more time. Look at it this way, did you become successful at any-thing overnight? Is it something you want to achieve strongly enough, and isit meaningful enough to you? If you feel it would be a positive change in yourlife, it is always worth trying again, even if you are frustrated with the possi-bility of not keeping your resolution.

For a fresh, new outlook on this resolutions idea, find inspiration. Do youknow some one who has acheived what you would like to? Find out how theywere successful, then try it yourself. Is there a target you can set, like to be asmaller size by the summer wedding, run your first 10K, or a special rewardfor acheiving this new you. Use such things to keep you motivated and ontrack. Use an inspiring story about others who have won against the odds, even if by some miracle and be determined to do the same with your goal.

A fresh start is easier if you are trying something totally new. It may takea bit more work to feel a fresh start “again”. So review what were the ob-stacles that you encountered before and make a battle plan for how you willovercome these this time. It is a good idea to do the same for new resolutionstoo, so you are prepared for the obstacles you imagine you may encounter.Planning is an essential part of every success so be sure to plan how you willaccomplish your goal.

How do you achieve success with anything? What is your personal suc-cess style? Successful change can be dramatic, black and white, one day oneway, the next day, another. Like that wonderful tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. Hechanged overnight! Successful change can be slow and steady accomplishingone step at a time. Look over your past successes and see which way workedfor you. Maybe you’ve been successful both ways or you may find one way isbest for you. Knowing your own successful strategies will help you plan forthis year’s success and next year’s, too!

Okay, now, deciding on a resolution may be difficult for some. You canoverwhelm yourself with possible resolutions, but choose with success inmind. Look at what you want to change this year in yourself, with family, friends? Is there some “theme” to your ideas of what will make you and yourlife better? We have all heard of the 12 Days of Christmas, but here’s a newtwist, how about the 12 Ways of New Year’s! List out 12 ways you can ac-complish your goal and implement one each month of the New Year. Or, ifyou are more the dramtic-change type, choose 12 new resolutions and add onechange each month. Imagine what a changed person you would be by 2010!Use this idea anyway you like. Use it with your family, make a step toward abetter life for all, one month at a time.

With all the economic pressures many of us are feeling, focusing onpositive goals helps keep our attitude up and positive, too. Stop counting yourdollars, as the measure of success, and count friends, smiles, laughs and bless-ings. We have become a very materialistic society and we have all becomeused to the ammenities of having more, but even with less, we can createthose positive parts of our lives, improve our relationships, our neighborhoodsand even our world. Find those simple things that make life better, pursuethem and we create a better year for all of us. I wish you a happy, healthy andsuccessful New Year.

Inklings of Expectations atNahant Therapeutic Massage

By Susan Cadigan, LMT, NCTMB

Before each session and especially before your first massage, I make timeto discuss your reasons and expectations of the session. It is important todetermine if your session is for wellness, relaxation, to de-stress, alleviatetension and invigorate the spirit, or if you need to have a session with focus ona specific muscular issue, that is affecting your comfort and activities. Afterreviewing the history and medical forms, I search for clues to what may beprovoking your discomfort, by discussing your activities and job demands.Even your inactivity can have an impact on how you are feeling.

When receiving a treatment that involves the deeper tissue techniques andis focused on alleviating muscle imbalance, or chronic pain and tension, it isimportant to know that your input and communication will be an integral partof the session. This means you are expected to provide feedback during yoursession. Often, I assign a number on the scale of one to ten, when doing someof the deeper work. The one is a feather touch and hardly registers any dis-comfort, while the ten is excruciating and is to be avoided. Depending uponthe goal of the work, the ideal level will be a five to seven level. This willvary, as each person has his/her own level of pain tolerance. I will ask that youtell me what level the discomfort is and if it radiates, or if you feel any othersensation on the muscle, or area. I will also ask if the level of discomfort haschanged at all. This constant communication and team work make for a veryefficient and successful treatment.

It is important to be aware of, and not to expect, a full hour of intensedeep-tissue work, head to toe. Often, a whole hour of direct deep-tissue workis too much for the mind and body to tolerate. The healthy approach is tofocus on one or two problem areas and be very effective and thorough withthe techniques and incorporate the whole being into the session with the thera-peutic massage. What you do after your massage/bodywork session is veryimportant to the total outcome.

To make the best of your treatment and extend the benefits of your mas-sage/muscular therapy, it is important to avoid high-impact activities, heavylifting and activities that may have caused the situation in the first place, for 8-24 hours. You may feel some soreness after your session and for a day or two(deeper tissue/muscular therapy). This is acceptable and can be helped with ahot soak in the tub, or gentle movement to warm the area. Water will play avery important role in your sessions before and after. It will be the vehicle toremove the wastes and debris, that will be stirred up, with the deeper tech-niques. As for the wonderful, therapeutic massage that focuses on removinglayers of stress and mental tension, all you need to do is relax, breathe and feelbetter, while on the massage table. After, you may find yourself having abetter quality of sleep, a feeling of calmness, being clear-minded and havingmore patience.

Thank you again, for blessing me with your visits and support. I am trulygrateful. I wish you a warm and peaceful holiday and may the New Year bringyou comfort and joy.

Nahant Seniors Blend Seamlessly as Studentsat Swampscott High

By Joseph F. Lisi, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools

One of the questions often asked is how do Nahant students fare, as theymove through the years in the Swampscott Schools, grades 7-12. To helpanswer this question, I’ve collected data from two years of rank in class, given to me by a very cooperative guidance department, at Swampscott HighSchool and post the following statistics:

Weighted GPA – Class rankClass of 2007 - 188 seniors Class of 2008 - 190 seniors 47 students /Quartile 47.5 students/Quartile

Number of Nahant students 24 12.7% Number of Nahant student 24 12.6%

Top 10 1 10% Top 10 1 10%(11th was a Nahant student)

1st Quartile 7 14.8% 1st Qtile 7 14.7%2nd Quartile 5 10.6% 2nd Qtile 3 6.3%3rd Quartile 7 14.8% 3rd Qtile 6 12.6%4th Quartile 5 10.6% 4th Qtile 8 16.8%

Top 50% 12 12.7% Top 50% 10 10.5%

Bottom 50% 12 12.7% Bottom 50% 14 14.7%

Inferences based on data* Nahant students account for over 12% or 1/8th of the total number of

seniors attending Swampscott High School.* The Class of 2007 had a very consistent distribution of students

within each quartile.* The Class of 2008 had a higher distribution of students in the top and

bottom quartiles.* In answer to the frequently-asked question: How do Nahant students

perform compared to their Swampscott counterparts? This one measure, theweighted GPA that determines rank in class, supports that Nahant studentsintegrate seamlessly into the student population in the Swampscott schools.

Johnson School UpdateSubmitted by Jim Devereaux

The Administration and School Committee, working with Town officials, continue their efforts to fully fund the needs of the Johnson School, for fiscalyear 2010. With state funding appearing flat, this could be a challenge forNahant, as well as for most communities in Massachusetts. I would adviseparents, residents, and all interested parties, to review our website (http://www.nahantschools.org/) for details regarding our proposed FY 2010 budget, including insight into those programs and services that are supported andthose without a funding source. The website also contains helpful information, such as MCAS performance analysis, traffic-flow pattern changes, classroomnotes, and other, useful school-related topics. Regarding the Johnson Schoolwebsite, we are very indebted to Corinna Kersten for her exemplary work onour website - Thank you Corinna!

I would also encourage parents, residents, and all interested parties, toreview the Swampscott schools’ website (http://www.swampscott.k12.ma.us),as they are also working through funding challenges, relative to the FY 2010budget. A variance exists between their stated needs and their anticipatedfunding, which, hopefully, will be reduced, or eliminated during the nextseveral months.

More information will be forthcoming regarding the progress towardsfully funded FY 2010 budgets for both Nahant and Swampscott.

Happy Holidays to all!

Congratulations to the NahantEducation Foundation

By Roberta Lerman

As a former President of the JohnsonSchool’s PTO, I would like to offer congratula-tions to the Nahant Education Foundation. TheNight of Music and Dreams fundraiser, put on bythis hard-working committee, offered folks intown a wonderful opportunity, for not only arelaxing night out a few moments from theirhomes, but the experience of listening to theunique and talented soprano, Ute Gfrerer, a high-caliber world entertainer, who just happens to liveright here in Nahant.

From inside the charming, old EllingwoodChapel, Ute enthralled her audience with twohours of enchanting music, sharing with us a fewstories and song, some familiar, some new. Afterthe concert, our generous hosts, Irvine and LouiseRusk, opened their lovely home to all their neigh-bors and friends, who attended the event, for achampagne and dessert reception. Making all themusic and pastry even sweeter, was the knowl-edge that the money raised would go directly tosupporting our children at the Johnson School.

We are fortunate to live in a place that is morethan a random grouping of streets and houses.Nahant has always been far greater than that. Ourtown is a weave of neighborhoods, all intersectingoverlapping and connected to each other, like thepeople who live here. Though my child’s days atthe Johnson School are over, as is my direct in-volvement with our elementary school, it feelsgood to still be able to contribute to the growthand quality of the education of our children. Get-ting a night out, filled with beautiful music, warmconversation and chocolate cake so good, itshould be classified illegal, was a bonus.

Our town remains such a vibrant and invitingplace to live because of the generosity of ourtownspeople, who continue to work and contrib-ute to events like this special night. To my gener-ous neighbors and to NEF, I want to say “thankyou” and “keep up the good work!”

News From the Johnson SchoolBy Diane D. Mulcahy, Principal

The Johnson School is very proud to have received a School-Based Li-brary Mini-Grant of $8,295.00, from the Elizabeth C. and Peter Tower Foun-dation. The New York-based foundation seeks to improve the lives of chil-dren, by funding projects through nonprofit organizations. The Tower Founda-tion funds specific projects and distributes 2.3 million dollars in grants everyyear.

The grant awarded to the Johnson School, was designed for schools tosupplement their school, or classroom, libraries. We are very grateful to Col-leen Munnelly, Diane Pierce and Terry Brown, who spearheaded the granteffort. Teachers had an opportunity to suggest book titles that would supple-ment their curriculum. Money from the grant has added over 580 books to thelibrary shelves.

On December 2, 2008, the Nahant Woman’s Club held its annual HolidayLuncheon in the Johnson School cafeteria. The theme for the luncheon wasthe Winter Solstice; members of the Woman’s Club gave several readingsabout observances around the world. Students from the Fifth and Sixth gradeclasses sang songs with a holiday theme.

On Monday afternoon, Mr. Tom Healey, Guidance Counselor atSwampscott High School, came to the Johnson School with several SHSstudents. Mr. Healey is the director of a mentor program, which reaches out tostudents about to make the transition from elementary to secondary school. The High School students answered questions, prepared in advance, by thesixth-graders. The questions ran the gamut from academic concerns, socialconcerns and extra-curricular opportunities. They addressed student concernsabout all aspects of making the transition to middle school. Mrs. Dunionreported that she was extremely pleased with the program. It was especiallygratifying to learn that many of the mentors were Johnson School graduates, who wished to extend the program to their former school.

The Winter Concert was a great success. The students performed in twoconcerts held at the school on December 22nd. The primary students inGrades Kindergarten–Grade Two performed in the morning, for family andfriends. Grades Three through Six performed in the evening. Both concertswere a great success and the students were in wonderful voice.

There are also may service projects around the school, to help those lessfortunate, during this holiday season. Both second-grade classes gatheredchange to donate to the needy, the Student Council sponsored a mitten drive,to help My Brother’s Table in Lynn and donations were made to a toy drivefor Toys For Local Children. Once again, the Johnson School community wasextremely generous. It is safe to say that all the students enjoyed the holidaybreak.

Coffee with the Principal was held on Wednesday, December 3, 2008.Approximately fifteen parents attended the event. It was an opportunity for meto answer questions and hear the concerns of the parents. We will continue toschedule the coffee hours throughout the school year.

Summer In NahantA collaboration of old photographs, letters and memories of those who

lived and resorted on this seaside peninsula before us.

Nahant Arranges Tribute To Henry W. LongfellowGarden Club Show On Wednesday

By Hazel A. Anderson

Nahant, the lovely cool vacation land of Boston folks, for years past, has had manyillustrious visitors in its history, but none who has sung its praises as widely as HenryWadsworth Longfellow.

Yet strangely enough, few, unless they have perused carefully the biographies of thebeloved American poet, associate him with the town, where, for a score of years, he spent hissummers and about which, in his aging years, amidst the beautiful surroundings at Interlakenin the Alps, he wrote, “I have often longed for Nahant, than I confess to anyone.”

Anxious to do honor to this man who did honor to their town, the Nahant Garden Clubhas stepped to the forefront and is preparing to pay him tribute this summer.

Planning for the annual flower show, at Nahant Town Hall next Wednesday, officers andcommittee intend to weave into a colorful setting, an atmosphere that will bespeak ofLongfellow and the poems which had their origination in the village...

The day following the Fourth of July 1850, he and his wife and family made the pleas-ant sail, from Boston, in the steamboat and became “paying guests” at the home of JonathanJohnson on Nahant Road.

This house located in the Post Office block was in later years moved to the corner ofwharf street and is now part of the Hotel Rockledge. In speaking of it, Longfellow said,“Nothing can be more pleasant than our Nahant cottage—sheltered, but near the sea.

The Longfellows found that the Johnson family was pleasant, also. He told in hiswritings of Mr. Johnson with “a laugh as deep and merry as the sea.” Mrs. Johnson, famousfor her sponge cake and popovers (Ed. Maybe not as good as Trudy Joyce’s.) and Annie, their gentle daughter, later Nahant’s very own poetess, whose work the great poet praised, even in those early days, as “written with great taste and feeling.

In his “Journal” Longfellow wrote much about that first summer with his family atNahant; how he walked along the shore and the rocks with his wife; how they sat together ona promontory covered with wild roses and planned a house of their own on that very spot, ahouse with balconies that would overlook the sea: how he and his boys went bathing to-gether and he joked about the sea serpent that was supposed to be lurking off Nahant. Hespent much time that July and August writing his “Golden Legend.”

In June 1854, Longfellow began his famous “Hiawatha” and continued to work on it“more or less every day,” while in Nahant. SOURCE: Lynn Item, August 7, 1947

The year 1910 will be recorded, in the history of Nahant, as one in which many of the older residents died and the last to be taken was Mrs.Annie E. Johnson. She celebrated her 83rd birthday on August 19th and, at the time of her death, was the oldest native woman living in the town.

Mrs. Johnson passed away, at her home on Central Street, at 8:30 Wednesday evening, after a short illness of pneumonia. She was born in the early days of the town, in a house (now the Rockledge), that sat where the post office is located. Her life was filled with the

romance and tradition of the town and to hergreat versatility is due, the writing of manysonnets and other descriptive narratives that, despite the different episodes, through whichthe history of many of the events occurred, are now attainable.

She a writer of much talent and apainter, as well. In the parlors of her latehome may be seen a number of views ofbuildings, the original of which have longsince given way to the march of the moderntown.

Her husband was Charles T. Johnsonand he died about 20 years ago. She wasmarried nearly 60 years ago. Two childrensurvive her; Ernest, who makes his home inMarblehead and Mrs. Carolyn Foye, wholived with her mother in the family home onCentral Street.

The family is distinctively one of theJohnsons, for Charles T. Johnson, was a sonof Benjamin and he, in turn, was a grandsonof the original Jonathan (Johnson).

Mrs. Johnson was perhaps the bestknown person in Nahant. Her family connec-tions were numerous and her own personalitymade her many friends. While in her youth, she was well acquainted with many of the prominent men who yearly spent the summer in the town: Longfellow, Motley, Prescott, Agassiz, Holmesand Frederic Tudor. All were visitors at her father’s house.

On the occasion of her last birthday, she seemed to be in the best of health and chatted pleasantly about her early days with several visitors. Soonafter, she became a bit feeble and a few days ago developed pneumonia. This resulted in her death on Wednesday evening.

Nahant’s Poetress

In the last century, Annie E. Johnson (1827-1910) was locally celebrated as Nahant’s “Poet-ess.” Also an accomplished artist, she is picturedhere on the left, with her daughter CarolynJohnson Foye, at their home on the corner ofPleasant and Central Streets. Mrs Johnson attrib-uted her poetic abilities to her girlhood associationwith Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a summerboarder in her father, Jonathan Johnson’s, home.*Mrs. Foye served as the Town Librarian for anumber of years. Photograph: Gift of Mr. and Mrs.Charles Butler.

* The Johnson Homestead moved to cornerof Willow Road and Wharf Street and namedRockledge (162 Willow Road). Longfellowsummered there in original location on NahantRoad where Post Office block now stands (1983).

COA NOTEBOOKBy Diane Desmond

As we leave the year 2008, we at the Council On Aging feel it was ahappy, successful year. We had many good times. We were educated onvarious subjects and gathered in friendship and good conversation at ourdaily luncheons.

Much of our success can be attributed to the many resources we havein our Nahant Community. We wish to thank all who have been so support-ive to our activities this year and wish them a Happy, Healthy and Prosper-ous New Year.

January at our COA, will be a quiet month. We will be planning theyear’s activities and events so that 2009 will be as successful. We willgladly accept any ideas and suggestions from the community. Volunteers asalways are very welcome.

As we see the year out, we want to particularly thank the North ShoreSongsters and their director Victor Dalpozzal, the 6th grade class of theJohnson School and their director, Sheri Spencer, for the “awesome” con-cert they performed for us. It was a wonderful experience to hear the youngand not so young, blend their beautiful voices together. It was so enjoyedby everyone in attendance, we hope to make it an annual event. HAPPYNEW YEAR!!!!
