Student Reports - Distributed Thursday afternoon If your child’s teacher is looking a little tired it is because it is close to the end of the term but also because they have just finished writing student reports. This is an activity that takes a considerable amount of time.Student reports will be distributed at the end of the day on Thursday 6th July.We keep a list of students where we need to provide an additional report for separated parents. If you are a separated parent and do not receive a report, please forward your name and address to the school so that you can be included on this list.Concerns? If after reading your child’s report you have questions or concerns, please make a time with your child’s teacher. It is best that a time is arranged for face to face meetings early next term.Comprehension Teacher’s sometimes use language that is not part of the daily life of people outside schools. This may be the case when you are reading your child’s report and you do not understand what is meant by literal or inferential comprehension. Here is a quick guide that we hope you can use when listening to your child read. Why Comprehension Matters? Comprehension is the reason why we teach children to read and it is the process where we get meaning from the text. Comprehension is not just finding answers in a piece of text — it is an active process whereby the reader creates a version of the text in his or her mind.Different types of comprehension The different ways that a child can comprehend is described in many literacy books, using a range of terminology. One such model is 3H (Here, Hidden or in my Head) - Graham & Wong, 1993This strategy moves students through stages from literal to deductive questions. In the younger years of school we firstly teach literal comprehension but then move quite quickly to more complex skills.‘Here’ questions are literal. The answers to which are apparent in the text, for example: ‘What was Lockie’s girlfriend’s name?’A ‘Hidden’ or Inferential question combines information given in different parts of the text to come to the correct answer: An example could be ‘How did Lockie’s life change when he became Vicki’s boyfriend?’Inferential questions are often those that begin with how or why or verbs like, would, might, should and could. We also ask students higher order thinking questions that require students to use prior knowledge to decide, predict, or deduce. These can be called ‘Head’ questions: ‘Do you think Lockie changed his mind about what the important things in life are? Why do you think that?’ These could be questions that also ask students to predict what will happen, imagine if that was you, decide if you think that was a good idea or to think about another way to solve the problem.Sharron Ward, Principal [email protected]

Indian Cultural Cooking

Sports Day House Captains

During the FLMD students’ Indian Language lessons this week all students made the Punjabi cultural food of Gulgule. It was a great opportunity for our FLMD Gujarati, Hindi and Punjabi students to socialise and participate in an Indian cultural activity.Gulgule are the Punjabi version of donuts and are usually cooked to welcome rain (monsoon). They are also traditionally cooked at a Punjabi wedding. During a Punjabi wedding it is a tradition to cook Gulgule one day before a wedding in a Mayian/Batna ceremony in the couple’s respective homes. The couple’s families rub yellow turmeric paste upon their legs, face and arms while sitting on a patri (a special red board with embroidery) below a red cloth held by four women. This is done to cleanse and balance the body for married life. During the ritual women sing traditional songs and those of the biradari (family and friends) receive the ritual gift of Gugule. The students enjoyed making the Gulgule and then eating it! It was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of term. Padma, Satwinder and Tajinder, Indian Language Teachers

Congratulations to the following Year 7 students who were voted by their peers to be the 2017 House Captains.Horrocks : Daniel S and Erin S Emelie : Sam J and Anshu P

Cancer Council SA Fundraising

In 2016 a group of 4 inspirational NPS students planned a way that they could raise much needed funds for the Cancer Council. Georgia, Madison, Amelia and Kirah baked sweets and made jellies to sell during recess play times. They sold cups of cordial as well. Over a few recess play times the group raised an amazing amount - $302.95! On Friday 23rd June, at the school’s assembly, Tamara from the Cancer Council was presented with a cheque by the group. It was a proud moment for them all. The audience and Tamara acknowledged their wonderful effort. Well done Georgia, Madison, Amelia and Kirah.

Netball NewsNominations for the forthcoming summer 2017/18 season are now being taken and will be submitted to EDNA by last mail on Friday 11th August. The season will commence on Friday 20th October and will conclude in Term 1 of 2018. Current players please speak with your coach if you will be continuing on for next season. Year 7 players going off to High School need to be committed to finishing the season in 2018 if interested in playing. Players with outstanding fees will not be eligible to nominate for next season. Please finalise your outstanding accounts as soon as possible.

SAPSASA Knockout Soccer

Another fantastic effort by the Nailsworth Girl’s SAPSASA Knockout Soccer team last week saw them defeat Northfield Primary 2-0 in their quarter final game. The team now advances into the semi-finals.It was a tight, tense, hard fought game and with the game in the balance Claudia E scored twice, ten minutes before the end and in the last minute to put the game beyond doubt. The girls were really excited and can’t wait to play their semi-final match in early Term 3. Unfortunately the team will be without the talented Natalija V who will be overseas on holiday.Well done girls and all the best in the upcoming semi-final match.George Koulianos, Team Coach [email protected]

If your child is turning 8 this year or in 2018, and is interested in playing netball for the school, could you please indicate your interest to the Front Office or to me personally over in the Library or via email. There must be a minimum of 8 players to submit a new team and someone available to coach and manage them. Games are played on Friday evenings at either Phillis Street (Maylands), Emery Road (Campbelltown) or Lothian Avenue (Holden Hill) netball courts. Fees for the summer season will be $50 and $40 for subsequent children and can be paid to Julie Chambers in the Finance Office. Please contact me if you have any queries.
