Putting On Our New Outfit

"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe

yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."

(Colossians 3:12)

God is good! He not only gives us the clothes, he teaches us how to dress. Our loving Father takes the

separate articles of clothing and puts together a complete outfit. Our new look will allow us to represent

the kingdom of God in royal fashion.

The Underwear of Humility

• "He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way." (Psalm 25:9)

• According to Charles Spurgeon, biblical humility is “a right estimate of one’s self”.

• "All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”" (1 Peter 5:5)

The Underwear of Humility

• Makes a good foundation for our other clothing

• Never wear it over your clothes. It looks silly and it doesn’t do its job.

• "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." (James 4:10)

• It is uplifting.

The Slacks or Skirt of Compassion

• "Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”" (Mark 1:41)

• "As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him" (Psalm 103:13, NIV)

The Slacks or Shirt of Compassion

• KJV says bowels of mercies.

• Greek root for bowels or intestines

• Hebrew root for womb

• Compassion is an emotion that wells up from deep within that compels action.

• When we put on compassion we are putting on something outwardly that reveals inner emotion.

The Shirt of Gentleness

• "Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near." (Philippians 4:5)

• Our English word for gentleness comes from the French word that meant gentility. The gentility believed that they had a high calling because of their fortune to be born in the upper classes of society.

• Good manners and good breeding meant showing compassion and benevolence to the lower classes.

The Shirt of Gentleness

• Noblewomen are cultivated and polished.• "Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent

in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good." (Titus 2:3)

• Qualities of a Noblewoman: Has Good Manners; Is Respectful of Others; Clever; Loves learning, having a natural curiosity about God and life; Polite; Encourages and appreciates the talents of others.

The Shoes of Kindness

• “This is what the LORD says: ‘Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,’ declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 9:23-24)

• God’s kindness is demonstrated

The Shoes of Kindness

• Kindness is moral conviction in action

• “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy” (Titus 3:4-5).

• “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25).

The Jacket of Patience

• “…then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” (Ephesians 4:1-2)

• “Patience serves as a protection against wrongs as clothes do against the cold. For if you put on more clothes as the cold increases, it will have no power to hurt you. So in like manner you must grow in patience when you meet with great wrongs, and they will then be powerless to vex your mind”. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

The Jacket of Patience

• Without patience you will be all wet.

• “There is no such thing as preaching patience into people unless the sermon is so long they have to practice it while they hear. No man can learn patience except by going out into the hurly-burly world and taking life just as it blows. Patience is riding out the gale.” Rev. Henry Ward Beecher
