GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE OF PROJECT:
The Project will be carried out in 12 countries, including 10 in Africa, and 2 in Asia. These countries are Sudan, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Mali, Guinea, Congo, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nepal and Pakistan.

PURPOSE OF PROJECT: Almost 1.2% of the one billion people living in Africa are visually-impaired. Cataract plays a major role among eye-related illnesses. Impossible to treat with medicines or glasses, cataract is either congenital or mostly occurs subject to age. The only treatment of a cataract that has formed is surgery. The disease impairs both distant and close visions to such extent to negatively affect a person's social life.
The countries where cataract operations will be performed are situated in locations where the rays of the sun fall vertically. These ultraviolet rays that cause serious damage to the human eye are among the major causes of cataract disease. Aside from climatic problems, poor nutrition, old-age and genetic factors are other causes of cataract.
In Africa, the number of people who suffer from cataract and are treated is 1 million 500. In Third World Countries, every five seconds one person and every one minute one child becomes blind. Notably in countries like Niger, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia which are situated along the Sahara Zone, there is approximately one doctor per 40,000 people, and millions of people never see a doctor in their lifetime. In Niger, there are only 11 ophthalmologists who can perform a surgery. This means, there is only one ophthalmologist per 1.2 million people.
According to World Health Organization, 39 million people are visually impaired worldwide, and cataract accounts for 51% of the visual impairment problems. 90% of cataracts are from under-developed countries in Africa. In the light of these facts;
- Health Assistance is one of the basic areas of activity of Kimse Yok Mu. Since the date of its establishment, the association has led various health organizations abroad. It aims to assist in the solution of cataract problem in Africa through Health Screenings and Cataract Operations.
- Kimse Yok Mu aims to carry out Cataract Organizations in 12 countries, including Sudan, Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Mali, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, and Guinea in Africa, and in Nepal and Pakistan in Asia.
8. GROUNDS FOR THE PROJECT: World Health Organization Cataract Facts According to World Health Organization, 285 million people are visually impaired worldwide. Among these 385 million people, 39 million people have lost their sight completely. The prevalence of cataract, a major cause of blindness, is 51%. 90% of the visually impaired people live in developing countries, and 80% of all visual impairment can be cured or prevented.

Cataract Operations performed by Kimse Yok Mu In the scope of health assistance activities, Kimse Yok Mu first started health screenings in 2008 in Darfur, Sudan, and as a result of examinations performed until 2012, the number of cataracts identified and treated by surgery reached 9,141 in 4 years. After 2012, in line with expectations from various countries, further health screenings and operations were performed in 12 countries and number of operations reached 27,586 in 2014. By the end of 2014, Kimse Yok Mu, having doubled its targets every year, aims to realize cataract operations of 30,000 people in 2015, 60,000 people in 2016, and 120,000 people in 2017.

TARGET SEGMENT OF PROJECT:
Target Segment In the light of data obtained from health screenings which Kimse Yok Mu has been carrying out since 2008, it has been observed that cataract can be seen at any age. According to these researches, cataract may develop subject to age, or may even be seen in newborns irrelevant to the age. On the basis of that, the disease may develop in babies congenitally due to genetic factors, and in older persons due to nutritional and climatic factors. For this reason, patients’ profiles are variable. Social Dimension of the Program Due to geographical adversities, development problems, governmental policies and the recent civil wars, the people of Africa cannot benefit from health services that are their natural rights. Guided by the philosophy that the quality of a society starts from the individual, this project aims to shed light on the social life of Africa. Psychological Dimension of the Program The cataract patient who encounters social exclusion is psychologically affected negatively, and this is felt by people around him/her. A person who is operated with the support of the program will gain his/her sight, a skill which maybe he/she innately lacked, or regain this skill which he/she had lost long after birth.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES: Protocols will be signed with hospitals through our Representative Offices in 12 countries in Asia and Africa (Nepal and Pakistan, Sudan, Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Mali, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Burkina Faso and Guinea). As a result of protocols signed, health screenings is carried out by local doctors, and patients who received an operation would be identified. An operation schedule is issued every month for patients to be operated, and people receive treatments at such dates specified in the schedule.
After the operation, the patient is followed up, and a photograph of the patient is taken. A file is prepared for each patient, and information and documents belonging to the patient is sent to Kimse Yok Mu inside this file for archiving purposes. The photograph of the patient who has undergone an operation will be printed on a certificate of appreciation to be issued to the benefactor. The certificate of appreciation will be sent via e-mail and contract addresses specified by the benefactor.

Table -9: Schedule of Project Activities PROJECT BUDGET Kimse Yok Mu has calculated average cost of a cataract operation in the countries where the operations will be performed, and determined that all operation expenses to be incurred to open one eye of a patient will be $100. The project budget has been established as $ 100,000 for operating 1000 patients in total, so that 100 patients will be operated every month throughout the 10-months period of the project.

EXPECTED RESULTS FROM THE PROJECT:
As a result of this project, 1000 cataract patients identified through health screenings in 12 countries will be operated. After donations made and operations performed, only one eye of 1000 patients regained its sight. Information about these patients (age, gender, operating doctor, etc.) was recorded, and record charts were created. These records will be useful for further health assistance services.
PROJECT SUSTAINABILITY:
Considering the need in Africa and Asia, it is known that the number of people who need a cataract operation is far more than the ten thousand people who are planned to benefit from this support. Operations to be performed with the support to be received in the scope of this project will provide a basis for subsequent organizations, which, in return, will reduce costs, and contribute to the sustainability of the project. PROJECT TEAM & ORGANIZATION CHART Project Coordinator : A person will control and watch operations and management processes. Project Assistant: A person will be responsible for following up reporting and documentation processes. Project Country Representative: A person will ensure performance of activities on behalf of Kimse Yok Mu in the relevant country. Hospital: These institutions will be responsible for providing physical necessities, performing operations, supplying technical equipment, medicines and medical consumables. Doctor : Professionals will be responsible for performing examinations and operations.
