Emptying the Express Mini viaPouringIf no syringe is available,the port becomes clogged,or the drain is almost full,the Mini may also be emp-tied by pouring. Clamp thecatheter with the blue slideclamp.

Separate the white in-lineconnection by pressing theclear button.

Tip the drain to the rightwith the tube pointing down(do not tip upside-down).Pour the contents into thenearest suitablereceptacle.

Once empty, reconnect thepatient tubing to the drainusing the connector.

IMMEDIATELY, open theblue slide clamp and theExpress Mini 500 is readyto go.

Warnings:1. Do not tamper with the positive pressure relief valve located on

top of the drain.2. Do not separate the in-line connector before clamping off the

patient tube.3. Do not keep the patient tube closed during drainage collection

or transportation.4. Do not connect any open luer-lock connectors to the needleless

access port located on the front of the drain.5. Do not use or puncture the needleless access port with a

needle.6. Do not puncture the patient tubing with an 18 gauge or larger

needle.

You are ready to go home, but still need your chesttube. A small device, called an Atrium Express Mini500, has been placed on the end of your chest tubeto help you get better.

About The Atrium Express Mini 500The Atrium Express Mini 500 is made to allow airand fluid to escape from your chest until your lungheals. The device will hold about a pint of fluid. Thisdevice is generally automatic but does have somesimple handling instructions. Empty the device asoften as needed (see directions below), but at leastonce a day and keep track of how much you emptyeach day. You can record the amount of drainageyou empty on a calendar and then please bring theinformation to your clinic when you return for yourfollow-up appointment.

Items Needed for Home Use• Atrium Express Mini 500 Chest Drains

(provided by hospital) • 60 cc luer-lock syringes to empty drainage, if

needed (provided by hospital)

• Wound dressings (provided by hospital)

Securing the Express MiniUse one or both of the straps packaged with theExpress Mini to securely attach the drain to yourbody, if required. Follow the picture instructionsincluded with each Express Mini or change to fityour specific needs. The Express Mini also has ahook to hang the device from a rail on a bed. Besure the device is attached so it does not pull onyour tube.

Wound DressingYou have a dressing around your chest tube. Thisshould be changed at least every other day or asprescribed by your doctor.

Showering/BathingAsk your doctor if it is okay to shower. Showeringwith a chest tube is generally alright as long as youdo not submerge the device in water. No baths,swimming, or hot tubs.

Checking For An Air LeakFluid must be present in the collection chamber tocheck for an air leak. Temporarily tip the drain tothe side as shown until collection fluid appears inthe air leak window . Bubbling in the air leakwindow when positioned as shown will confirmthat air is leaking from your chest. No bubbling inthe air leak window will indicate that no air is leak-ing from your chest. Immediately return theExpress Mini to the upright position.

NoteThis device is very important and the tubing muststay attached to the end of your chest tube. • If the tube becomes disconnected, reconnect it

IMMEDIATELY and tape it securely.• If the tube becomes disconnected and you

can't get it back together, go to the closestemergency room.

Emptying the Express Mini via LuerPortKeep the Express Mini inan upright position andmake sure the tubingstays firmly attached tothe end of your chesttube. Do not allow theExpress Mini to complete-ly fill with fluid or it maystart to leak out.

If the Express Minibecomes full with fluid,empty it by screwing thesyringe firmly onto theport located on the bottomof the Express Mini.

Pull the plunger back onthe syringe to empty thefluid. When the syringe isfull, unscrew the syringeand empty the fluid intothe nearest suitablereceptacle. Repeat asnecessary until empty. If itbecomes difficult to emptythe fluid using a syringe,squirt water through theport to flush out the blockage, pour out thecontents as shown on the next page, orconsult your nurse or physician.

IMPORTANT: If at any time you have any concernsor questions, contact your nurse or physician.

Always place the drainbelow the chest in anupright position.
