Amidst controversy, a number of street names have been changed in eThekwini, with more expected. This exhibition, examines the history of the older colonial names, and delves into the people and events behind the new names. The exhibition has two parts. In the foyer, Peter Machen presents his archival research findings on the names, looking at the fore- fathers of Durban and the stamping of their brand of history on the city streets, as well as the histories repre- sented by the new names. The research is installed as a montage, and wraps around the foyer in a band that encircles the visitor in history. The research, curated by Brenton Maart, occupies the round gallery. The key body of work is generated by the Imvunge Street Photographers, whose sensitive visual analysis dem- onstrates that architecture is not only about buildings, but also about people and their activities within and around buildings. Modernist Gone is the importance of structure and form that defined modernist archi- tecture. Emerging in the Imvunge Street Photography visual research project is the notion that “social archi- tecture” is a more accurate description, a field where form and function merge with societies, giving rise to even further layers. This phenomenon is especially evident in big cities in developing countries, where a more authentic Africanism is layered onto colonial history. Also in the round gallery, spray-paint installation by local graffiti artists are exhibited alongside chalk- boards where visitors can make their voices heard.
