A NEW exhibition, No Longerat this Address, which seeks tonavigate post-apartheididentities, is on at the DurbanArt Gallery until next month.
Amidst controversy, anumber of street names havebeen changed in eThekwini, with more expected.
This exhibition, examinesthe history of the oldercolonial names, and delvesinto the people and eventsbehind the new names.
The exhibition has twoparts. In the foyer, Peter
Machen presents his archivalresearch findings on thenames, looking at the fore-fathers of Durban and thestamping of their brand ofhistory on the city streets, aswell as the histories repre-sented by the new names.
The research is installed as amontage, and wraps aroundthe foyer in a band thatencircles the visitor in history.
The research, curated byBrenton Maart, occupies theround gallery.
The key body of work isgenerated by the ImvungeStreet Photographers, whose
sensitive visual analysis dem-onstrates that architecture isnot only about buildings, butalso about people and theiractivities within and aroundbuildings.
ModernistGone is the importance of
structure and form thatdefined modernist archi-tecture. Emerging in theImvunge Street Photographyvisual research project is thenotion that “social archi-tecture” is a more accuratedescription, a field where
form and function mergewith societies, giving rise toeven further layers.
This phenomenon isespecially evident in big citiesin developing countries, where a more authenticAfricanism is layered ontocolonial history.
Also in the round gallery,spray-paint installation bylocal graffiti artists areexhibited alongside chalk-boards where visitors canmake their voices heard.
