Give five years to legal aid, then join corporates - Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi asks law students

Two professions that contributed most in India’s freedom struggle were the lawyers and the teachers. This tradition should continue and they should continue to contribute in nation-building exercise today, said Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the inaugural function of Gujarat National Law University (GNLU)’s new campus in Gandhinagar.

The Chief Minister muted an idea that similar to medical students who devote one year after completing their study in rural service, those passing out from law should also contribute five years for legal aid to needy people before joining corporates.

“Our every generation has heard this phrase that justice delayed is justice denied, but the solution of this problem is human resource development and infrastructure. Gujarat government has worked in both directions. We have employed 20-25% more budget to this area for infrastructure, while for human resource development we have tried to improve law colleges and establishment of Law University. Such foundation work has been done with longer vision. Today’s students are going to serve the judiciary tomorrow. We have pumped in Rs 150 crore in GNLU and we will pump more in future as per the need,” Modi said.

Modi compared the campus of GNLU as mini-India, as students from almost all states of India come here to study. Modi said the university will surely make its place in India’s topmost universities thanks to its campus, and its building.

Modi said the next goal is to make this campus a green campus. He talked about importance of Lok Adalats that provide justice just for 35 paise. He also talked about how in last one decade Gujarat has offered three new universities, namely Gujarat Forensic University, Gujarat National Law University and Raksha Shakti University to the nation.

Peace and harmony propelled Gujarat's development - Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi

Asserting that tranquil atmosphere in Gujarat had put it on the fast trajectory of growth, Chief Minister Narendra Modi today dared the Congress-led UPA government to "compete" with the state on development front.

"Gujarat and development have become synonymous to each other. This is because of the atmosphere of peace, unity and harmony that prevails in the state, which has become a yardstick of development. I appeal to the Union government to compete with Gujarat," Modi told a public meeting after holding a day-long Sadbhavna fast at Bharuch.

"Riots and curfews have become the days of past in Gujarat. Unity, harmony, peace and integrity were the aim of Sadbhavana Mission and Gujarat's development was solely based on it," he said, announcing a development package of Rs 1,675 crore for Bharuch district.

Coming down heavily on UPA government for drastic price hike and failure in controlling inflation in the country Modi said, Gujarat has changed the definition of development.
