Introduction

Nils Larsson Friend (Frande) was one of those early adventurers who traveled

from Sweden to Upland (West Chester, PA) in 1648. Nils Friend’s adventurous spirit was

instilled in his children who ventured into the unexplored areas of Southern

Pennsylvania, Western Maryland and Northern Virginia 1 during the time that those areas

were considered wilderness. Nils Friend’s sons, grandsons and great grandsons were

some of the first northern Europeans to explore this new ground.

The primary goal of this book is to collect and correlate the vast amount of

information that has been published about Nancy Friend. It is my hope is to preserve the

available records of the life of Nancy Friend and her family for those who follow.

I welcome any additions or corrections to this information. I can be contacted

William Currence emigrated to America from Ulster, Ireland, when but 17 years old and eventually settled in the Tygart Valley, now Randolph Co., WV, built the first mill in the county, built Currence Fort and is said to be the first white man killed by the Indians west of the Allegany Mountains. John Currence was a member of the first grand jury of Randolph County in 1797, Sheriff in 1806 and Captain of the County Militia in 1805. He lived eight years less than a century, dying 30 July 1849 and is buried beside his wife in the Currence Wamsley Cemetery about 4 miles south of Huttonsville, WV – FFAA Library, submitted by Trissa Haefling, 1988

Floyd Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia: To all to whom these presents shall come; Greeting: Know Ye, That in conformity with a survey made on the fourteenth day of June one thousand eight hundred and forty eight by virtue of Land Office Treasury Warrant No. 11057, there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto John Currence of Samuel a certain Tract or Parcel of Land, containing one hundred acres, lying and being in the County of Randolph adjoining a survey of Adam Magee’s 100 acres and John Crouch’s 300 acres and bounded as follows, viz; Beginning at two white oaks said Magee’s corner, thence S 50° E 40 poles to a white oak thence S 65° E 77 poles to a white oak and dogwood, thence S 10° E 28 poles crossing Wilmoth’s Run to two white oaks and a beech, then S 40° W 14 poles to a beech and white oak S 83° W 160 poles to a chestnut oak on said Crouch’s line, then with his true line reversed N 15° W 134 poles to a stake his corner, then with another of his lines reversed N 20° E 61 poles to a stake said Magee’s corner on Crouch’s line, thence with his line reversed S 39° E 106 poles to the beginning, with its appurtenances, To Have and To Hold the said tract or parcel of land, with its appurtenances, to the said John Currence and his heirs forever. Obituary of Rosabell Cowden

Rosabelle Cowden, daughter of George and Anna Cowden, was born April 8, 1858, departed this life Feb. 27, 1936. On April 3, 1876 she was united in marriage to Robert Cummings, who passed away in 1907. To this union nine children were born: Harrison, Anthony, Robert Frazier and Golda Pearl, who died in infancy; Mrs. Ida Sinclair, Mrs. Lillie Skinner and Mack Cummings survive. On Feb. 16, 1912, she was again united in marriage to Levi McColpin, who died Jan. 5, 1925. Again in June 1933, she was united in marriage to Henry Draper who survives her. Several years ago she united with the M.E. Church of Russellville where she lived a faithful Christian life. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother, a good neighbor and friend and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her going besides her husband and children, one brother L.S. Heath of Robinson, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and five step-children. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. L. Lawler of the Palestine M.E. Church at the Russellville M.E. Church, Sunday afternoon.

About the Author

Patricia Ann (Friend) Thompson was born and raised in Garrett County,

Maryland. Pat’s first book on the Friend family was John Friend Sr. of Friendsville,

MD (2007), the patriarch of the Friend Family in Garrett County Maryland. She is a

descended from John Friend Sr. though his sons John Jr. and Charles. Patricia is a

descendant of numerous Garrett County families such as Enlow, Harvey, Tasker,

Murphy, Upole and Thrasher. Pat is a member (#854484) of the National Society of the

Daughters of the American Revolution, Youghiogheny Glades Chapter (through John

Friend Sr.), a Forefather member of The Swedish Colonial Society, a life member of The

Friend Family Association of America, a life member of the American Legion Post 71,

Oakland, MD and a member of the Garrett County Historical Society. Pat currently lives
