Welcome to 2019
It was fabulous to see all our students looking neat and smart for their first day of school. Students have settled in quickly to their new classes for 2019. Staff were very pleased to see the children working so hard to get organised in their classroom and listening attentively when others were speaking. A great start to the year.
Berry Street Educational Model
On Tuesday staff attended a professional development day with other teachers from local schools. Around 120 staff took part in the Day 3 of the Berry Street Educational Model program. This program has been implemented throughout 2018 and it will continue in 2019. The focus of Tuesday’s training day was strategies to develop students stamina in the classroom and to keep them engaged in their work.
Classrooms
Both the Bigroom and Littleroom have had a make-over during the break to ensure we provide stimulating and functional classroom spaces. The school appreciates the extra time staff put in over the holidays to complete this important task.
Notes and Forms
There are a number of permission forms attached to the newsletter that need to be signed and dated to be valid for the 2019 school year.
Photos & Digital Image Policy
This policy needs to be reviewed and approved annually by School Council. A revised permission form will be sent home once this is done. Parents are reminded that any photos of students taken at school or at school events must not be uploaded to Facebook or any social media without consent. Parents should only upload photos of their own children. Privacy laws prohibit any photos or videos of school students being uploaded to Facebook or any social media platform.
School Bus
Our bus route will be remaining the same as last year so at this stage there are no changes to the bus stops or times.

School Maintenance
Our Asset Management Plan program of work was completed at the end of 2018 so there was no work completed over the school break. However, Trent (Tahnee’s dad) has ensured the grounds were watered before the start of the school year and Len (our gardener) has ensured the dam was filled, the lawns mowed, trees were pruned, and leaf and bark litter has also been attended to before the children returned. This helps to provide a safe and inviting environment for the students and staff. The school appreciates their efforts, especially during such a hot spell of weather.
Student Attendance
Our attendance rate has improved over the last two yeas which is wonderful to see. 2017—90.2%, 2018—94%. These results show we are trending up from our school target of 90% Parents are reminded that the Education Department requires the school to contact parents on the day of a students absence if the school has not been notified that the student will be absent. A note can be sent to the school prior to the absence (if foreseen) or a SMS or phone call can be made to the school on the day. The school phone/answering machine is 5484 5395 and the school mobile is 0408 403 884.

Open Water Learning Experience
The Bigroom children will be travelling to Moama on Friday 15th February to participate in this program run by Lifesaving Victoria. This is an annual program the school participates in to ensure our students know how to stay safe in the outdoor water environment. Whilst the program takes place on the banks of the Murray River, the skills and strategies apply to all outdoor water places such as lakes, dams, creeks and the sea. Permission forms will be sent home next week once transport is organised.
