    What is Nanotechnology?

It is the technology where the particle size is inThe range of manometers i.e10-9meters.

Conventional technology uses particles inmacro size, occasionally in micron size, i.e. 10-6

    meters.

Particle size below100 mm falls in the realm ofnanotechnology

Standard human hair diameter is about 4500nm.

    So what?

The surface area to volume ratio increasesmany fold. A micron size sphere, if convertedto nm size spheres yield 109 spheres withthousand times increase in surface area!

At near atomic size, these particles exhibit

many new physical properties governed byquantum phenomena. By exploiting these newproperties, various materials can be developedaiming at various specific applications.

Functionally, any paint has two components: Pigments (mostly inorganic material particles to

    impart desired colour)

Vehicle (mostly of organic origin forms a colourlessmonolithic layer adherents to the substrate. On thismonolithic layer, pigments are embedded to give thedesired colour effect )

The terms like Alkyd, Epoxy, PU etc. used for

different types of paint generally qualifiy the vehicle Other items added in paints like filler, thinner,

suspender, binder etc. are to improve workability, cost, storage, spreading properties etc.

    In Nano painting system

The pigments are of nano dimensions; thusimparting special properties as discussedearlier: The single most important characterbeing the increased Surface to Volume ratio

    The vehicle also is changed to inorganic type;

Polysiloxane, Polysilazane etc., which arecompounds of Silicon, Nitrogen, Hydrogen andCarbon

Because of nano dimensions and change inphysical properties, the pigment particles candisperse in much more compact fashion and

with much less cross section (DFT) can achievethe hiding property.

Typical DFT in nano paint is 30-50 micron ascompared to 250 microns in conventional paint

This leads to drastic reduction application timeand cost

These compounds have structures similar toorganic compounds, only the carbon moleculesin backbone is replaced by silicon molecules.

This gives it very high resistance to UV lightand makes it ideal for outdoor applicationswith long service life

Compared to conventional material, it is more

scratch resistant and possesses much better antifungal /bacterial/algae properties

Absence of VOC makes the layer (film) moremonolithic and porosity free
