New System of Government

• After the end of the Committee of Public Safety, a new government is made.

• It had a legislative branch and an executive that was a committee of five members called the Directory

The Directory

• The Directory becomes very corrupt and can not manage the country.

• The people of France are unhappy again.

Napoleon Bonaparte

• Member of the French military – well versed in military tactics

• Troops are very devoted to him

Overthrow

• Stages a coup d’etat (overthrow of the government) of the Directory and sets up a new government called the Consulate

• There is a legislature, but really Napoleon has absolute power

• Officially ends the French Revolution

• Marches a 600,000 man army into Russia • Russians retreat and burn cities and towns

– leave no food or supplies for Napoleon
