    This Guideis one of aseriesof finding aids describing

    records deposited in the National Archives.

    series

    wasinitiatedby the

    Microfilming Project

    of the

    Committee for the Study of War Documents of the American

    His-

    torical

    Association

    in

    cooperation with

    the

    National Archives

    and

    the Department of the Army. With the termination of the

    AHA project

    in

    July

    1963,the

    National Archives assumed sole

    responsibilityfor the reproduction of records and the

    re-

    paration

    of Guides.

    Thisisone of a numberofGuides describing the records

    of theGerman Army field commands. These recordsfallinto

    five categories: Records ofArmyGroups, R ecords of Armies,

    Records

    Corps, Records

    of

    Divisions,

    and

    Occupational

    and

    Other Records.

    This Guide, which constitutes Part III of records of the

    corps, describesthe contentsof 160rollsofmicrofilm re-

    producing the records of the X - XVII Corps. The records in-

    clude material

    on theseizureand

    occupation

    of

    Austria

    and

    theSudetenland in1938and

    Bohemia

    and

    Moravia

    in 1939,the

    campaigns in

    Poland

    and in western Europe in

    1939-40,

    in the

    Balkans in 194-1, against the Soviet Union in

    1941-45,

    and in

    Italy in

    1943-44.

    Also includedis material covering occupa-

    tion duty

    and antipartisan

    warfare

    in

    Yugoslavia

    in1943-44.

    The

    provenance

    to

    which

    the

    documents

    are

    attributed

    is

    thearmy headquarters thatoriginallykept the file, although

    a

    large proportion

    of the

    items

    had in

    fact been retired

    by

    the

    units to the Heeresarchiv Potsdam for permanent retention.

    There

    an

    accession number

    was

    stamped

    or

    written

    on the

    cover,

    and

    it is by

    this numbering system that

    the

    folders were

    organ-

    ized in the World War II Reco rds Division and its predecessor,

    the

    Departmental Records Branch of the Department of the Army,

    which offices administered the records before the assumption

    of these duties by the National Archives. A

    X. Armeekorps (X Army

    Corps)

    The

    X Army Corps was formed in 1935 as a corps and corps-area headquarters.

    Itfought in

    Poland

    in1939 and in theWestin 194-0. Thecorps playedasig-

    nificant part in the encircling operations which rolled up the Allied bridge-

    head atDunkirk. It participated in the initial assault against Russia in

    June

    194-1,

    crossing

    the Memel

    River

    and

    p roceeding northward

    to

    Porkhov

    and

    StarayaRussa. The corps was continuously engagedin the Lake Ilmen area,

    centering around Staraya Russa

    and

    east

    of the

    Lovat River , until

    the

    latter

    partof

    194-3.

    Itthen withdrewto thevicinity ofMichalkino.

    Early

    in 1944

    the

    corps

    was

    engaged

    in

    farther withdrawal action south

    and

    westward,

    XI Army Corps was formed

    in

    1936 as a

    corps

    a n d corps-area headquarters.

    Itfought in Poland in J939 o^d

    corps operated

    inYugoslavia.

    Mariupol

    on the Sea ofAzovin the

    southern sector

    of the

    easternfront. In May 1942 it participated in the battle of

    Izyum,

    colla-

    borating with Rumanian and other forces in the destruction of twoRussian

    armies in theIzyumpocket. The corps fought on the Stalingrad front from

    Novemb er 1942

    to

    January 1943

    and was

    destroyed there. Corps Command

    for

    Special Employment Raus (Gen. Kdo. z.b.V.

    Raus),

    whichwasknownfor a

    short time as Corps Command for Special Employment Cramer (Gen. Kdo. z.b.V.

    Cramer), was

    formed early

    in

    1943. This unit

    was

    renamed

    XI

    Army Corps

    on

    July

    20,

    1943.

    It

    withdrew over

    the

    Dnieper

    to

    Kherson,

    and in

    February

    1944

    was

    encircled there, together with

    the XLII

    Corps. Liberated

    by the

    8th Army and the 1st Panzer Army, it was refitted

    ^nd

    assigned to the

    1st Hungarian Ar my in April 1944, participating in defensive

    action

    in

    the

    Carpathian Mountains region. In September 1944 the corps was iden-

    tified in southeast Poland and in eastern Slovakia.
