NYC/LI NARI Helps Renovate the House that Love Built

For members of the NYC/LI chapter of

NARI, helping the Ronald McDonald

House of Long Island become a home-

away-from-home for parents and

siblings of hospitalized children has

been a labor of love since 2013, when

the chapter first became involved in

a monumental redesign initiative aimed

at making the House a more comforting

place for the families it serves. As a

result of their involvement, the chapter

was instrumental in renovating the

House, located in New Hyde Park next

to the Steven and Alexandra Cohen

Children’s Medical Center of New York.

It has been said that it takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home.

The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island’s Project Design initiative was a two-phase project aimed at a complete revamping of the 26-year old facility, which serves more than 1000 families per year. The goal of the project was to bring together leaders from the interior design industry and local remodeling firms to provide solutions that would make the House more homelike and inviting for the families staying there. Volunteers from all sectors of the design and remodeling industry donated innumerable hours to make Project Design a reality, and that donation of time is deeply appreciated by the House’s Director of Special Projects, Jennifer Nicholson.

The first phase of the project, which was completed in the summer of 2013, transformed 18 bedrooms, kitchen areas, laundry areas and several common areas in the House. NARI Community Service Committee Chairman Laurence Carolan of House of Laurence coordinated the project, and NARI’s team of volunteers spent countless hours installing laminate flooring, painting rooms and completing the molding and trim work during this phase. The second phase of the project added 24 bedrooms, four kitchens, five common areas and laundry rooms, and the creation of a brand-new fitness center and medi-tation room.

The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island now features the work of more than 45 renowned interior de-signers and local craftsmen, who came together to give each room its own unique look and feel. Some rooms boast bright, primary colors, while others offer softer, floral hues. From sports-themed areas to rooms fit for a princess, all designs were created with one goal in mind – to make the stay of families using the Ronald McDon-ald House facilities a more pleasant one. The Project

Design renovation initiative helped the Ronald McDonald House move away from the institutional facility it was to a bright, cheerful environment that recreates a feeling of home.

“It is a true honor to have NARI as a Project Design part-ner,” said Matthew Campo, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. “Their professionalism and quality workmanship are commendable and we are appreciative of their dedication to our mission and this initiative to benefit the families we serve.”

The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is the one-hundredth house of more than 300 Ronald McDonald House programs internationally. The mission of The Ron-ald McDonald House of Long Island is to give comfort and shelter to families experiencing the pain of having a sick child in local hospital facilities. The House provides the parents and siblings of these children with a tem-porary haven in a secure and comfortable environment among other families sharing a similar burden. To learn more about the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, visit them online at www.rmhlongisland.org.

“Project Design would be impossible without the help and generosity of NARI,” said Nicholson. “They have been here through every step of our renovation – morning, day, night, weekends. We cannot thank them enough...”

Today’s roofing materials are made with dura-bility, energy efficiency and resistance to ele-ments, so that you can count on years of pro-tection for your home. Depending on what your main goal is for your new roof, groundbreaking new products from trusted manufacturers are available, helping you add value – and comfort – to your home.

But first of all, how do you know if you even need a new roof? And if you do, what’s the best option for your home? These are questions any homeowner might have. Don’t worry. We’ve found some answers for you. We spoke with experts in the roofing field who offered their experience and advice for identifying a roof in need of replacement and the steps you should take to make sure the job is done right.

Gina Marzano of Marcor Construction & Roofing in West Babylon, N.Y., said there are eight ways you can tell if your roof might be in need of replacement.

If you’ve noticed any of the following, it’s probably time to consider a new roof:

If your home is experiencing any of these conditions, it’s likely your roof isn’t protecting your home as well as it should be. The prospect of calling a roofer doesn’t have to be painful, though, as long as you find someone with the right qualifications. Marzano said that one of the best ways to do that is to look to your local chapter of NARI. “NARI holds members to some of the highest standards in the remodeling industry,” Marzano said. The NARI Code of Ethics expects members to adopt a number of principles, including use of quality products, truthful advertising, prompt complaint resolution, legal compliance and up-to-date licensing and insurance. “Homeowners should always make sure any contractor they use has the proper insurance,” Marzano said.

Have you been considering putting a new roof on your home? With so many innovations in roofing over the past few years, many

people would agree that there’s no better time than the present.

“Consumers should never be afraid to ask to look at the policy and the declaration page (of the company’s insurance certificate) to make sure the company they’re working with is specifically covered for roofing.” Additionally, Marzano said that certification as a roofing specialist is another good indicator that you’ve chosen the right contractor. Marzano’s company, for instance, is certified by Owens Corning Industries as an authorized Owens Corning Residential Roofing Specialist. Because of this designation, Marzano is able to offer customers cutting-edge roofing materials from the manufacturer, like their Duration Series shingle featuring patented SureNail technology.

“SureNail Technology offers stronger sealing power and overall better and more effective installation,” Marzano said. “Architectural shingles are available with Sure Nail technology and provide beauty and performance. They are wind resistant up to 130 mph and algae resistant

for 10 years.” This is good news for Long Islanders who have been contending with hurricane conditions over the past few years. And, not only do these shingles provide superior protection from the elements, they also add to the curb appeal of your home.

If you’d like to install solar panels along with your new roof, did you know that there are shingles on the market

that have solar capabilities built right in? Richard Ciota of Division 7, Inc. in Stony Brook, N.Y. is helping customers reap the benefits of solar energy – right from their rooftops and without solar panels. Ciota’s company provides Dow Powerhouse Solar Shingles, a breakthrough in roofing technology. “These shingles are truly one of the most innovative roofing products on the market today,” he explained. “They make roofing energy efficient because they’re a solar panel and a shingle all in one.” Ciota said that Dow Powerhouse

shingles are integrated directly into the roofing, blending in cleanly with other shingles.

Dow Powerhouse shingles also offer the durability needed to withstand some of the tough Long Island weather – they’ve been tested, validated and certified

to stand up to the elements, including 150 mph winds and hailstones up to one and one quarter inches. They’re watertight, and because they’re installed in sections and integrated into a new shingle roof, they provide maintenance-

free protection and advanced energy efficiency. “We can integrate Dow Powerhouse shingles with asphalt, slate, cedar or DaVinci shingles on any level of roof,” Ciota said. “Solar shingles won’t wear down and create energy.”

Ciota remarked that one of the main benefits of

installing Powerhouse shingles is the cost. “Having to

install a new roof is not something consumers usually

feel good about,” Ciota said. But because of the

shingles’ energy saving properties, there are programs

available that can help cover costs and cut down on

the roofing proposal price.

With today’s innovations, your roof definitely doesn’t have to be your grandfather’s roof. With advances in weatherproofing, durability and energy efficiency, modern roofs are made to last for years with minimal need for repairs. A new roof will increase your home’s

Photo Courtesy of Division 7, Inc.

“We can install the solar shingles for free on some areas of the home, and help people save up to 80 percent on the rest of the roof cost. Through the New York State Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit Program, people can get up to $5000 in tax

credits, and they’ll decrease their utility bills from day one.”

Is it time for a kitchen remodel? If so, you’re probably thinking about how you can best maximize your space. You definitely want to maintain function, but you also want to be mindful of form. If your kitchen is its own entity, you can create a totally unique space, but if you have an open concept plan, you’ll have to be a bit more mindful of the rooms around the kitchen area. What looks will work best with the space you have, as well as with the overall look of your home? If you’re hoping to create a trendier kitchen with a decidedly up-to-date feel, then you’ll want to consider these kitchen trends for 2015, offered by some of Long Island’s top kitchen design specialists and NYC/LI NARI members.

Vita Burdi, VP, CKD, CBD, of DJ’s Home Improvements in Franklin Square, N.Y., indicated that exotic woods seem to be popular right now, with Wenge and Okume being the more sought after. Colors like creamy chocolates and dark sables are popular finish colors, but whites for cabinetry are still essential for Modern Glam kitchen styles. “Apron front sinks are still very popular,” Burdi added. “Especially the new Kohler Whitehaven in a cool finish. Their colors ‘Sugar Cane’ and ‘Sea Salt’ offer a fabulous crackle-look finish.”

JoAnn Lyles, CKD, of Riverhead Building Supply Design Showroom in East Hampton, NY, said that floating shelves and vanities seem to be trending for 2015, and people are seeking clean lines and design that isn’t overly cluttered. Lyles said that while design seems to be favoring neutral shades for kitchens, “bringing in a second color such as an orange or red in a place like a kitchen island can be a lot of fun.” Lyles said that all trends indicate that shades of grey are going to be popular in kitchen design schemes in 2015 as well.

Patricia Nicolini, CKD, of Alure Home Improvements in East Meadow, N.Y., agrees that greys will be big in 2015. “Greys are definitely back,” Nicolini said. “Grey is the new white.” Nicolini added that today’s greys are warmer, with more of a taupe tone. She also noted that quartz countertops are gaining momentum, as people are looking for greater flexibility in countertops, with minimal upkeep. Quartz offers solid colors as well as new and exciting patterns, all while featuring durability and ease of maintenance.

Bob Geiger, Kitchen and Bath Showroom Manager at Nassau Suffolk Lumber’s Design Center in Bohemia, N.Y., concurred that quartz is trending for 2015, and that lighter colored countertops seem to be on an upward swing. He also said that a blending of past and present seems to be at the forefront of 2015 kitchen design. “Current styles are less ornate and more transitional – modern with a traditional feel,” Geiger said. “Shaker-style full overlay doors with a painted off-white finish are still most popular.”

Stephen Wangel, owner of The Kitchen Loft in Lynbrook, N.Y. agreed that the trend is definitely moving away from the elaborate and that Shaker is still popular. “We’re not seeing the more ornate renovations. Everything is a little more subdued, and people are choosing function over form. Frills are just not there.” Wangel, like Burdi, noted that deep, rich colors like espresso and coffee bean are arriving on the forefront, and that trends are moving away from the lighter maples toward these darker colors.

Charles Testa, CMKBD and owner of Island Kitchens & Baths in Patchogue, N.Y., noted that whites and darks are playing together nicely and will be into 2015.

“We’re seeing white cabinetry with dark floors, as well as a white perimeter with a dark island,” said Testa, concurring that kitchen trends are moving toward “a transitional design with a hint toward contemporary.” He said that stainless steel appliances are still popular, and that more appliances than just the usual oven, fridge and dishwasher are being incorporated into the design. “We’re installing beverage centers and second dishwashers more frequently,” Testa said. He also remarked that LED lighting under cabinets and in drawers is gaining momentum.

While the designers we polled each had unique insights into kitchen design trends for 2015, there are some points that most agreed on:

n Grey finishes are growing in popularity

n Quartz countertops are gaining momentum

n Ornate is out – clean, uncluttered lines are in

n Modern with a traditional feel is trending

n Rich chocolates and coffee colors are popular

Is Green for GoodMost people know that Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk works to help low-income families build the homes they need so that they may have a decent place to live. But did you know that they also work to help the environment as well? At the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, home improvement materials that may have previously gone to the landfill are available for purchase at drastically reduced prices.

According to ReStore Director Paul Camassa, of the items available for purchase, many are new and are often sold for one-third of their original price. The premise of the ReStore is simple – contractors, homeowners, retailers and others can donate their new or gently used items, and receive a tax deduction (and a feel-good vibe) for doing so. Camassa said most of the items at the ReStore are building materials like doors, windows, HVAC equipment, appliances and lumber.

“As long as it’s in good, usable condition, we rarely turn anything down,” Camassa said, adding that a good share of the donations are new, having been the result of an overbuy, a refused order or a scratch-and-dent type of situation. Customers who are looking to save money on their home renovations frequent the ReStore, because as Camassa explained, inventory changes on a day-to-day basis. “We’re receiving new materials all the time, so anyone looking for a particular item should check in from time to time, because we never know what’s going to be donated.”

The benefit of the ReStore philosophy is three-fold – reselling the donated items means consumers get good quality materials much more affordably; donors receive a tax write-off; and discarded items become usable goods as opposed to landfill fodder. “One of the missions of Habitat’s ReStore is also to keep the landfills as empty as possible,” said Camassa. “We want to see these items being used – not in a landfill going to waste. Most of the people who donate to us are nice people who simply want to do the right thing.”

The best part about donating to the ReStore? The proceeds received from the sale of the donated items fully benefit the Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk. “One-hundred percent of the proceeds from ReStore goes to Habitat Suffolk, and the funds are used to help people locally,” Camassa said, adding, “Being involved in the Habitat ReStore is a feel-good business. If I could do this job for free, I would.”

Keep Mother Nature in Mind.

In today’s world, people are becoming more aware of their own personal carbon footprint, and as a result, they’re making choices every day based on their impact on the planet. From recycling papers, plastics and metals to reusing clothing, household items and even food items, there seems to be a trend toward reducing waste and making better use of existing goods. But when you’re remodeling your home, it might seem that excessive waste and less-than-green practices are going to be a given. Not anymore! Many of today’s remodelers are trained and certified in green remodeling techniques, and they bring that knowledge into your home, putting it to work for you and Mother Nature.

With so many innovative new materials and products available, green remodeling is no longer a trend that will be replaced or simply disappear – it’s becoming the norm. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry, or NARI, has been educating members about green practices since 2006, and has worked to encourage professional growth in the field of green remodeling and encourage the homeowner to become educated about green homes. In order to be considered a green remodeling professional by NARI, a contractor must consider sustainability and maximize nature’s resources in an efficient and responsible manner, in both the way they conduct business and in their remodeling projects.

Page 29: NARI-NY Design & Remodel Fall/Winter 2015

www.nari-ny.org 29

“Green remodeling encompasses many aspects of a home remodeling project and its materials,” said Barry Goggin, MCR, CKBR owner of Meadowview Construction Inc. of Ronkonkoma, N.Y. and NYC/LI NARI Historian. “Homeowners tend to believe that any new and high-tech ‘green’ concept will cost them more ‘green’... and that’s not always the case.” Goggin, who is a 2014 Chrysalis Award winner for Remodeling Excellence in Green Remodeling Projects, believes that any remodeling project can incorporate green techniques. “Every homeowner we see gets a brief description of how we can apply some basic shades of green to their project, and how these procedures can save them money and be healthier for their family,” Goggin said.

There are many benefits for homeowners choosing to work with a green remodeler, and according to Goggin, it all starts with the air they

breathe. “A major concern that green remodeling addresses is indoor air quality,” he said. “Unhealthy air in a home caused by

appliances, poor ventilation, unhealthy building materials or household chemicals can be a major source of illness in any home.” He added that proper deconstruction techniques, such as on-site trash control and chemical containment, as well as safer and healthier building products, are better for homeowners and construction workers alike.

Laurence Carolan, CR, GCP, UDCP owner of House of Laurence in Merrick, N.Y. and NYC/LI NARI Secretary, agrees

that healthier building materials are an important aspect of green remodeling. “The green industry is responsible for

an increase in products that don’t contain harmful chemicals, like VOCs and formaldehyde,” Carolan said. “Today there are floor

finishes that are completely water-based that have no smell and dry quickly,” he said, adding, “The green remodeling and building industry has also almost completely removed the use of formaldehyde in building

materials.” Formaldehyde, a toxin used to preserve biological specimens and that is present in cigarette smoke, was once regularly used as a bonding agent in plywood and in carpet glues.

Carolan, who was the first NARI Certified Green Professional in New York State, is an advocate of using remodeling products and materials that have been made in America as well. Beyond the economic reasons of choosing American-made goods, there is another level that both remodelers and consumers should take into account. “In America, there are regulations that just aren’t present in some foreign manufacturing facilities,” Carolan said. The lack of regulations in some countries can lead to the presence of unsafe, toxic substances and poorly manufactured materials. “It’s important to know where your building materials are coming from and understand the shipping effect on the environment when we transport goods from the other side of the world,” he added.

Remodeling Your Home?

“While at the onset

the cost might seem higher, you have to

consider that the last 15 years of lighting from an LED bulb is basically free,

when you compare it to the cost of other

bulbs”

Page 30: NARI-NY Design & Remodel Fall/Winter 2015

30 NYC/LI NARI

Carolan takes a whole-house approach to green remodeling, looking at several factors before a project commences. “I look at the house as a large box affected by interior and exterior elements,” he said. “Green remodeling is a science. You have to look at energy efficiency, indoor air quality and the use of natural resources – and how you would combine all these aspects to create a better, happier home for our families.” Carolan also suggested that a green remodeling project doesn’t end when the project is finished. “Remodelers and consumers need to take a look at the waste they generate and the disposal of it.” He encourages builders and homeowners alike to find ways to reuse leftover materials, and to consider donating goods and equipment to programs like the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which offers home improvement products that may have previously been discarded for purchase at drastically reduced prices.

Carolan is a proponent of solar-based energy, better insulation and high-efficiency home comfort equipment and appliances, but he said the simplest measure any homeowner can take – and one that will save them both in energy consumption and utility costs – is the installation of LED light bulbs. Sometimes people are put off by the initial cost of LED bulbs, which is higher than their incandescent or CFL counterparts. But, as Carolan explained, the price of these bulbs is gradually coming down, and many utility companies provide rebates for customers who install LED light bulbs in their homes. “While at the onset the cost might seem higher, you have to consider that the last 15 years of lighting from an LED bulb is basically free, when you compare it to the cost of other bulbs,” Carolan said.

Another way for homeowners to reduce energy consumption is by harnessing the power of the sun. Desmond Greaves, CRPM, GCP, UDCP owner of DG Custom Built Homes & Remodeling of Bay Shore, N.Y. and NYC/LI NARI Board Member, supports solar energy as a green remodeling practice. Solar photovoltaic, or PV, uses solar panels made up of a number of solar cells to provide usable solar power. Greaves indicated that solar PV could reduce a homeowner’s electric consumption from the utility company, and shield consumers from rate hikes. He said solar thermal, which uses solar collectors to generate thermal energy, can help consumers save on fuel bills and can also be used to heat hot water and supplement space heating. He also suggested people can go green by incorporating spray foam, air sealing, radiant heat and high-efficiency HVAC into their remodel.

For Goggin, talking about green practices with clients and giving them the tools to do their own research is the best way to help them understand how green remodeling can benefit their home and their family. “I advise clients to research the best and safest products for their home. While they may not always be the cheapest, in the long run they will be the healthiest,” Goggin said, adding, “These measures include low VOC paints, energy-compliant appliances, water filtration systems, window placement in rooms, tree and plant locations on the exterior, and simple conservation methods that will all be healthier for the family – as well as the planet.”

PLAN ADEQUATE STORAGE SPACE

You won’t want to trip over a table saw while taking your first sip of coffee in the morning. So, make room for materials, tools, and equipment by clearing your work area of unnecessary gear. You may want to try creating a space in your home dedicated specifically for construction materials and tools. The garage is always a great go-to resource if it’s available and easily accessible for workers.

CREATE A PHASE LIST OF PROCEDURES

Meet with the contractor and create a list of work that will be done. Try to incorporate a chronological timeline so you’ll know what phase of the project you can expect next. The schedule is complicated. Your contractor should keep you in the loop on the expectations of each remodeling stage, but you’ll want to arm yourself with the knowledge to ask the right questions.

BRUSH UP ON BUILDING METHODS

The five-day per week, 9-to-5 jobs to which you may be accustomed is a bit different than the one your construction crew is used to. A little construction savvy will help see you through those blue days when your project is a “no-go” because your crew is a “no-show”. Could that happen? Yes, you’ll find that remodeling proceeds in stages. Separate crews install framing, siding, insulation, masonry, finish carpentry, and roofing. Painters, electricians, and plumbers may all have to make several trips to complete their jobs. Slabs must cure, paint must dry, etc.

NO WATER OR POWER

Know in advance if and when workers plan to shut off your power and water. That way, you can avoid food spoilage in the refrigerator/freezer. Also, be prepared by having a supply of bottled water and coolers with ice on hand.

MAKE AN EXTRA KEY OR CREATE A TEMPORARY SECURITY CODE

Depending on your schedule, there may be a need to share keys or garage opener/security codes with the contractor or workers. Keep track of any keys given out. If you give an opener or security door code, create a temporary code while the work is in progress. Once the work is complete, return to your regular code. Don’t forget to ask who will take responsibility for any mishaps.

DOUBLE-CHECK ALL MATERIALS UPON ARRIVAL

Once tile, cabinets, baseboards are installed, there’s no turning back (or at least it can be very expensive to have to do so). Before workers start drilling, gluing, nailing, painting, etc. make sure the product you ordered matches the product that was delivered to your home. Don’t just trust the box it came in. Open it!

TIPS & TRICKS TO SUCCESSFULLY SURVIVE YOUR HOME RENOVATIONSLiving Through a Remodel

Tools, dust and contractors, oh my! Living in a construction zone is no one’s idea of an

ideal home environment. But, the result will be worth it in the end, right? We’ve got some helpful hints

of how to survive the growing pains that come along with any large home remodeling job.

Page 35: NARI-NY Design & Remodel Fall/Winter 2015

www.nari-ny.org 35

DON’T PLAN TO ‘BUY AS YOU GO’

You can cut down on last-minute stressful decisions as well as material availability delays by selecting all materials with your contractor in advance.

BATTEN DOWN YOUR BELONGINGS

Your contractor will take the necessary steps to protect and cover the work area, but remodeling leaves more dirt and dust throughout the house than you might imagine. You may want to cover furniture in other areas of the house, especially in rooms adjacent to work being performed.

Remember to cover your air vents for your HVAC system. One low-cost option is to use furnace filters or fiberglass filters. Usually coming in sheets or rolls, this material can be easily cut to custom sizes. Cut it to fit over your air ducts and secure it in place. The filter material will allow the air to flow out of the vent or into the return, but will trap large construction dust, dirt and debris.

DRY CLEAN DRAPES, RUGS AND UPHOLSTERY

Use remodeling time as a perfect excuse to have curtains, rugs and upholstery cleaned. Otherwise, remove drapes, throw rugs and upholstered furniture as practical and place them in an area away from the work being performed.

STORE BREAKABLES

Accidents happen even with the most experienced construction crew. Box away knick-knacks and personal mementos from the construction zone for safekeeping. If furniture is to be moved, pack contents in boxes and remove them from the work area. This protects contents from loss and breakage, and also prevents you from having to dust or clean each knick-knack after the work is complete.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

That’s easy for us to say, right? No one can prepare for the unseen incidents that may transpire during remodeling projects. Tearing down a wall may uncover a problem that demands plan revisions. Remember, late deliveries, inclement weather and wrong parts are not necessarily related to the contractor. The relationship you establish with your contractor can greatly improve the overall remodeling experience.
