Since the beginning of humanity, storytelling and our ability to learn is what has set us apart from other species. It almost seems that our interest in stories is in our genes and is what makes our brain work the way it does.

In the early days of telling stories around the campfire after a day of hunting and gathering

, today we do pretty much the same thing at the beach, the park or the local bar after work.

With the introduction of new technologic devices, the ancient art of story telling has evolved as a media for teaching and learning.

First the printing press allowed stories to be saved and shared in the written format.

The ability to broadcast stories, both real and make-believe was made possible with the introduction and the radio and then the television.

Individuals and families gathered to share the stories being communicated to a diverse audience.

And now computers…

and the Internet are technology offers the opportunity for change in the creation and presentation of stories. With each technologic advance the name has evolved with the new media

. With Computers aand the internet based story the buzz word is Digital Stories

The DST movement has its beginning in the musings of Dana Atchley’ an assistant Professor the University of British Columbia who began experimenting with story writing, photography and video production to cope with feeling of geographic and artistic isolation.Dr Atchely was a multimedia artist passionate about combining the ancient arts of storytelling with the powerful tools of multimedia technology.

He used the latest technology to create "digital stories" that connected and appealed to audiences in a more visceral, visual, emotional...and real way. Here's what Dana Atchley said believed that ...digital storytelling combines the best of two worlds: the 'new world' of digitized video, photography and art, and the "old world" of telling stories

Atchley was a bit of a legend and certainly a pioneer in the digital-storytelling front. His clients included Coke, EDS, Adobe, Silicon Graphics and many others.
