Narrative Practices: Responding to Sexual Violence and Trauma Narrative Practices: Responding to Sexual Violence and Trauma 5 & 6 June 2019 5 & 6 June 2019 COURSE OBJECTIVES This workshop aims to: ● Examine the political context of society’s understanding of sexual violence ● Explore the impact of sexual assault on the identity formation of adults and children ● Assist workers to collaboratively identify acts of resistance to assault ● Assist workers to collaboratively identify acts of reclaiming of life from the ongoing effects of sexual assault / trauma ● Develop and support narrative skill development through exercises and discussions COURSE OUTLINE ● Discuss the politics of gendered violence ● Explore mental health issues as ‘expressions of distress’ ● Consider the link between meaning making and identity formation ● Discuss worker discomfort and concerns when hearing stories of those subjected to sexual violence / trauma ● Practice double-listening when hearing stories of trauma ● Consider ways workers can be sustained when responding to issues of sexual assault and injustice ABOUT THE FACILITATOR Loretta Pederson, Narrative Therapist – Sydney Narrative ideas have been an integral part of her counselling and group work over the past 15 years. She is particularly passionate about meeting with people who are experiencing mental distress or responding to trauma. Loretta’s article ‘Sharing sadness and finding small pieces of justice: Acts of resistance and acts of reclaiming in working with women who’ve been subjected to abuse’ was published in the Narrative Therapy and Community Work Journal in 2015. Loretta Pederson has, for 20 years, worked with families and individuals who are responding to complex issues such as mental health struggles, family violence, sexual assault, and drug and alcohol issues. She worked for an Intensive Family Support Service as team leader and is now in independent practice offering counselling, supervision and training. Loretta is on the teaching team for Dulwich Centre, Adelaide and has facilitated workshops in Australia, China, Singapore, Qatar and Turkey. She currently offers Skype counselling to residents of Norfolk Island through Anglicare.
