Narrative Theories

CLAUDE LEVI-STRAUSS

Strauss suggested the idea of binary oppositions such as love and hate, good and evil, dead and alive.

Good and Evil is apparent in my short film and is portrayed by the lighting. When Ella the ‘evil’ character is in set, a ambient low lighting is used whilst when the ‘good’ character is in shot she often has light, natural lighting.

BARTHES

Barthes suggested the idea of symbollic codes which organises semantic meanings.

This is apparent in my short film as I use a darker, duller room where the murder happens which emphisises the darkness of the event that took place.

TODOROV

Todorov’s theory is the state of equilibrium, followed by resolution followed by new equilibrium.

My film follows this pattern as the equilibrium is the ‘norm’ of being at school, then the disequilibrium is the idea that you Ella is evil and has supernatural powers and ends up killing avi.

The resolution is that she gets punished and detainted at a mental esylum and the new equilibrium is of course because Avi has died.
