Narratives and my storyboard

Todorov’s theory

The trailer starts with the equilibrium being calm and seeing the protagonist on a swing being peaceful, and “normal” for a child.

This is broken quickly by the use of props such as the sharpening of a knife

And the close up of the victim crying. The trailer intensifies with the protagonist and the victim Finally the trailer does not reveal whether or not the

equilibrium has been resorted.

The trailer is a story of the protagonist changing/ becoming possessed/ obsessed in killing the victim. Going through different stages of her state of mind- sharpening the weapon, stalking/ following the victim up to chasing her and then blood appearing at the end of the trailer which leaves enigma in the audiences mind as to what has happened now?

Roland Barthes- Enigma codes

Enigma codes are important within a trailer as this is what hooks in the target audience to watch the film. In my trailer I have used a number of factors to create the enigma code:

The use of quick cut editing and no flowing storyline makes the audience compelled and confused as to what is going on and makes them want to watch the film.

The ending shot of the protagonist with blood on her hands makes the audience wonder what has happened.

You don’t know who the victim is or her link to the protagonist

Not knowing if the equilibrium is resorted at the end of the trailer

These link into the proairetic code and the hermeneutic code of the enigma conventions, I have used arrows to indicate which codes I feel link to the enigma I have used in the trailer.

Levi Strauss- Binary opposites

Binary opposites are used in my trailer from the good vs. evil, sane vs. insane and powerful vs. powerless.

However the main focus of binary opposite is “GOOD VS EVIL”.The protagonist vs the victim. The protagonist will have use of a weapon as

shown in the storyboard whereas the victim is helpless with no defence.

Propps’ character theory

Characters form the media production that is my trailer, therefore I wanted to meet the conventions of one of the main theories. This theory helps to shape my plot slightly however I only use three characters which do to some extent meet propp’s theory.

Amber – (Protagonist), The mother , The victim
