BY THE NUMBERS

CITY FINANCESThe City began its annual budget process in April with the departments taking inventory of the current year and making requests for the coming year. Then, the Finance Department compiled all the information for the City Manager’s review during the month of May.

Beginning in June, city staff will begin to review budget items with City Council and various committees for input and prioritization. Throughout the summer, staff will continue to collect information and fine tune the coming year’s budget.

The presentation of the draft budget to City Council and the public generally occurs at the August council meeting. The budget is generally adopted by ordinance at the September Council Meeting after the Certified Tax Roll has been received from Harris County. Depending on the receipt date of the Certified Tax Roll, occasionally the adoption of the budget cannot occur at the regular monthly Council Meeting, but must be delayed until the following week to meet all the publication deadlines.

All residents are invited to participate in the budget process by asking questions, attending council meetings, or just following along on our website. All budget information, can be found online at www.nassaubay.com/financialtransparency.

Statistics for April 2015

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHTThree students from St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal School competed against students from schools across the state at the Private Schools Interscholastic Association State Academic Meet on May 2nd.

Congratulations Elliott Miles, Nathan Samuell, and Walter Kilgore for making it to the state competition!

Walter Kilgore earned 1st place for fourth grade spelling and Nathan Samuell earned 4th place in the same category.

Each year, St. Thomas is one of the smallest schools to compete, but their students consistently earn awards in the top six places in numerous categories.

MeetYourNeighbor:AnnGay

Over the years Ann Gay has worked side-by-side with Nassau Bay citizens and leaders to make our city gardens a special place of beauty.

It has been said of the city gardens: "A garden is a beautiful piece of canvas artwork which will mature in our hearts over time, its form and structure will forever stay, however artwork in our Nassau Bay gardens is artwork expressed in both time and space, continuing ever after through generations, becoming a process of engagement and interaction with the very spirit of her citizens."

Ann just completed two years as District IV Director of Texas Garden Clubs. As Director, she has overseen an area encompassing 23 counties with 85 clubs and 16 affiliates from College Station to Beaumont to Port Lavaca. She encouraged Clubs to interface with each other and to follow Texas State Garden Club and National Garden Club objectives.

Ann has also served as Arbor Day Chairman for the Houston Federation of Garden Clubs for the past 5 years. Each year she planned a program and planted trees at Fisher House 1 & 2 on the grounds of the VA Hospital in Houston.

Ann’s love of gardening started with her membership in Nassau Bay Garden Club where she has held numerous offices and served as President for three two-year terms starting in the mid-70s. She is proud to have had the first Pocket Garden, the Tranquility Arbor, installed at the end of her first term in 1978. Now, there are six gardens that the Garden Club maintains.

Ann continues to work with citizens and city staff to develop and maintain Nassau Bay's gardens which are the city's own artwork canvas and our legacy for future generations.

Join the next Garden Club meeting to meet Ann and learn about a variety of gardening topics. All residents are invited to the monthly Garden Club meetings held the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30am at City Hall. Each meeting starts with a meet-and-greet, then club updates, and a knowledgeable speaker about a variety of gardening topics.

STAY INFORMEDThe Nassau Bay Police Department is now participating in RAIDS Online, a new crime mapping tool that connects law enforcement with the community to reduce crime and improve public safety. Crime mapping helps the public get a better idea of the crime activity in their area so they can make more informed decisions about how to stay safe.

RAIDS Online allows users to search for crime in their area, visualize crime hot-spots, sign up for neighborhood watch reports and view recent crime activity.

RAIDS Online goes beyond crime mapping by automatically alerting the public about recent crime activity and by improving communication between the public and law enforcement through anonymous tips. RAIDS Online empowers the public to make better decisions about crime by putting the same technology used by law enforcement to analyze and interpret crime activity into the hands of the public.

View the crime map online at www.raidsonline.com or download the free smartphone app available for both iPhone and Android.

PUBLIC WORKSUPDATESStreet Supervisor Scott Kline and crews installed a new corrugated plastic PVC line that replacing a 52" metal storm drain line that ran under the north end of the Boardwalk on Upper Bay that had deteriorated over the years. Crews also made repairs to a manhole where the line connection had been damaged. Marine contractors constructed a cofferdam to allow crews to pump out water entering the project site from the creek so staff can work in a safe environment.

Working against high tides made these repairs take longer than originally expected, but crews effectively completed the work.

Crew Leader Jr Cruz with the new Caterpillar Backhoe that replaced a 1983 John Deere Backhoe that had served the City well for 32 years!

The new backhoe has already been very useful with the storm drain line replacement and with a forklift attachment to help move equipment during the recent rains.

THANK YOU to Animal Control Officer & Shelter Manager Troy Bradfield for taking such good care of all the animals that enter the shelter. This photo was taken the day Chukchi went home with his new adopted family. This sweet goodbye shows just how much the animals appreciate Troy too.
