There is no doubt that early treatment can be justified if it provides additional benefits to the patient, the question of when, how, and why is answered in depth in this clinical conference. One of the most important advantages to begin the orthodontic treatment early is to take advantage that in early mixed dentition the skeletal growth patterns can be modified to a certain point. Some of the benefits with the early orthodontic treatment are: improvement of Airway, improvement of confi- dence and self-perception, facial growth assessment and reduction of Risk of Trauma to Teeth. Precautions against treating too early are frequent, because the chance of recurrence of occlusal disturbances is regarded as high, and the cost-benefit ratio weak. A closer scrutiny of the backround of these views reveals that they are based on existing clinical practice rather than on controlled studies. Nevertheless, there have been new developments in both basic craniofacial biology and clinical orthodontics during the last decades which warrant a new assessment of the prospects of preventive and interceptive orthodontics. Early treatment of dentomaxillary dishar- monies, anterior open bites, Class II abnormalities and skeletal Class III abnormalities will be discussing. There is no doubt that early treatment can be justified if it provides additional benefits to the patient, the question of when, how, and why is answered in depth in this clinical conference.
