Preparing for his current position:Nate said that he feels that college did not fully prepare him for job in public relations. He feels that you do not start learning until you start doing the job and you will begin to learn things that you did not know before you began the job.

He said that there is no correct way in public relations. When he began his job he felt like there were people that were smarter, faster, and better then him. He still feels this way, but he said that there is always an opportunity to learn from the people around you.

Trends Affecting the Work of Seigenthaler PR:Nate said that the biggest trend that is affecting his work at Seigenthaler is that there is now a digital component for everything. Newspapers are dying and they are not printing in depth pieces like they used to. This has put a strain on the options to communicate. Nate said that he is responding to these issues by encouraging the companies he works for to reassess their values and the mission of their companies. He also said that it has made it more important for them to shape the content and get right to the point in their communication instead of repeating the message in many different forms. Digital strategies make it easier for them to reach a lot of people at once.

The Things that Nate Wish He Would have Known Before Becoming a PR Professional:

Nate stressed a lot that you cannot learn until you are doing the actual job itself.

He also wishes that he would have appreciated the value in practicing technical writing. He wish he would have focused more of learning how to make his writing more precise.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals:Nate said that it is really important in PR to be clear and concise. You do not need a lot of words to convey a detailed message. It is important to get to the point. He also said that it is extremely important to realize that it only matters how other will read your messages in PR. It does not matter if it makes sense in your mind and you think that it makes perfect sense, if it does not convey the proper message to the audience then it is not going to be effective.Nate also said that it is important to learn from the people that have been doing PR for a lot longer then you. Do not act like you know it all and try to do it with out help, because you can learn so much from people above you. Staying humble and realizing that there are people that know more then you is very important.
