INSTRUCTION FOR THE CANDIDATE


Unit of Competency:

PREPARE LAND FOR AGRICULTURAL CROP PRODUCTION

Time Alloted: 3 HRS AND 10 MINUTES

Using the given supplies, materials, tools and equipment, the candidate must be able to perform the following:

Demonstrate how to mount harrow to a tractor and do actual harrowing of the field (30 mins)

Demonstrate how to gather soil samples for soil analysis (30 mins)

Demonstrate how to operate tractor with disc plow (30 mins)

Demonstrate how to cultivate land using animal driven plow (30 mins)

Demonstrate how to prepare a planting bed using tractor with bedding implement or the animal given a specified planting distance in a 50-square meter area (e.g. 0.75 m between hills and 1 meter between rows for tomato) (30 mins)

Develop a field layout for a specified topography and soil type for a specific crop (e.g. sloping area with clay loam soil for tomato production) (30 mins)

Demonstrate how to compute for the seed/seedling requirement per hectare given a specific crop and planting distance (e.g. 0.75 m between hills and 1 meter between rows for tomato) (10 mins)

Prepare and bring portfolio evidence in the form of: a. Training Certificate b. Employment Certificate c. Performance Evaluation Report

Demonstrate the process of training other workers the correct way of fertilizer application using appropriate equipment and appropriate personal protective equipment (45 mins).

Note Demonstration should include use of PPE, fertilizer mixing, recommended application rate for 50-sq m, application method, equipment use and maintenance

Demonstrate chemical weed control application in a 50-sq meter area infested with weeds ( 20 mins)

Material Requirement: measuring spoon, herbicide (250 ml), knapsack sprayer, water

Given a 50-sq m weed-infested workplace, identify the types of weeds present (grasses, broadleaf and sedges) and specify corresponding weed traits affecting crop-weed competition (30 mins)

Material Requirement: weedy area, paper, pen or pencil

Demonstrate the process of training other workers the correct way of herbicide application using a knapsack sprayer and appropriate personal protective equipment (45 mins).

Note Demonstration should include use of PPE, herbicide mixing, recommended spray speed and swath, sprayer use and maintenance

Material Requirement: sprayer, herbicide and PPE (coverall, boots, hat, protective eyewear, mask, respirator, and gloves)

Demonstrate how to apply fertilizers and chemicals safely (20 mins)

Compute for seeding rate, plant density/population per hectare given a certain planting distance for a specific crop (e.g. tomato with planting distance of 0.75 m between hills and 1 m between rows) (10 mins)
