I convey my sincere appreciation to the Organizing Committee of ‘National Assembly on Pediatric Emergency Medicine’ for hosting “India-International Conference on Pediatric Emergency and Acute care” for the first time in India held on 27th Feb – 1st March 2009 at India International Center, New Delhi. The event would help in capacity building and skills development of medical community in dealing with pediatric emergencies in the hospital setting, field setting and during disaster. Importantly, nurses, paramedics, school health workers and even general public would benefit from this endeavor. It is timely that ‘Society for Trauma and Emergency Pediatrics’ is being launched on this occasion. Release of tool “Rapidex Pediatric Resuscitation Consult” designed for hassle free resuscitation is praiseworthy. I am sure the program meticulously planned would be a treat for the delegates.

I am delighted to be part of the first national conference of society of trauma/emergency pediatrics STEP for India in New Delhi. This is a great beginning for the children of India who are the future precious resource of our country and therefore time has come now to upgrade emergency and trauma care. Fortunately India has a fine network of hospitals and doctors and with innovative ideas and proper planning it is possible to use existing resources. Many states are already in the process of upgrading pre-hospital care. As concerned child advocates we should join together in this exciting venture to make a major impact on reducing morbidity and mortality of children. I have no doubt that STEP will become a prominent force in coming years to accept this challenge and continue to contribute to the welfare of our children. I wish the convention organizers all the success and best wishes for this endeavor.

Last two decades have seen the development of subspecialties of pediatrics in tertiary care centres of our country. Some of these centres, like Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi are offering post MD Fellowship/ DM programs in pediatric subspecialties of Neurology, Hemato-Oncology and Critical Care.

In contrast to these subspecialties Pediatric Emergency Medicine touches the lives of all pediatricians in clinical practice. Naturally, many more pediatricians show interest in CMEs and workshops in pediatric emergencies. This is evident in the present National Assembly too where seats for all pre-conference workshop were full well before the last date. Keen interest has also been shown by health workers of schools of NCR and nurses of all major medical institutions of Delhi in this event.

I am confident that the “1st National Assembly on Pediatric Emergency Medicine” organized by Society for Trauma and Emergency Pediatrics, India, IAP Delhi Branch and Centre for Child Health, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, will prove to be a major milestone in the growth of this subspecility in our country.

I am delighted to be associated with the National Assembly on Pediatric Emergency Care, which I see as an important initiative to focus on the pressing need to develop this specialty. It is a long time since January 1987, when I was appointed on the newly created position of Additional professor of Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care at Postgraduate instituteof Medical Education and Research. I believed that this specialty will see tremendous growth because of its relevance and importance to Pediatric practice. Alas! this did not happen. Perhaps, because most Pediatricians considered it the domain of general pediatrics; they did not consider it a separate specialty, perhaps because it is not identified with an organ system such as nephrology, cardiology etc. Even today, when there are voices that are raised to advocate creation of Emergency Medicine as a separate specialty, there is little that has been done to create and nurture Pediatric Emergency services. With notable exception of Pediatric Advanced Life support Courses run by Indian Academy of Pediatrics, of which I was privileged to be the first National Convener, and recent efforts at forming Emergency Medicine courses for Pediatricians, we have done precious little in this direction. What to talk about pre-hospital care, currently in most hospitals the emergency rooms, barring a few exceptions, are managed by a general duty doctor, who most often has no specific training either in emergency medicine or pediatrics. There is an urgent need to change it all for better. We need to give our attention to develop Pediatric Emergency Medicine in this country so that every sick child with acute illness and injury is able to receive immediate initial recognition, evaluation, and care. We also need to develop training programmes for administration, research and teaching of all aspects of Pediatric emergency medical care and have a emergency medical system for the provision of prehospital emergency care, Toxicology and Poison center and Disaster planning and management for both natural and manmade events. I wish and hope that the National Assembly on Pediatric Emergency Care will act as a catalyst in that direction and one day in near future we be able to ensure that quality emergency medical care will be treated as a fundamental right of a child and made available to all who seek it.

It gives me immense pleasure to know that the National Assembly on Pediatric Emergency Medicine is being organized by Society for Trauma and Emergency Pediatrics, India IAP, Delhi Branch and Centre for Child Health, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi form 27thFeb to 1st March 2009.This is the first time in India that we are having a conference, which will focus on Pediatric emergency and acute care. This will go a long way to build capacity and skills development of medical community in dealing with pediatric emergencies in the hospital setting, field setting and during disaster. The conference will be an academic feast and the launching pad for STEP, India (Society for Trauma and Emergency Pediatrics)
