The 4th National Treasure Hunt will meet onSaturday 3 July at the Tattershall Castle floatingpub. The venue is situated in the Thamesopposite the London Eye and the nearest tubeis Embankment.

The Tattershall is a great placeto sit inside or out, even afterdark on a warm summer’s day, and for thosewho would like to continue their night after theevent, there is a nightclub in the venue whichplays old and new chart music, open until 3am(cost £5 before 10pm, £7 thereafter).

The day itself starts from 3:30pm and the gamewill begin from 4. Your team will be given fourhours to roam an outdoor area of London insearch of answers to various statue – relatedquestions, all of which can be found within thespecified boundaries. A bonus game awaits, solet’s hope for fine weather!!

The cost will be £5 per person, either inadvance or on the day. It would really help me ifyour group can let me know how many teamsyou’re sending as early as possible as it will givean indication of how many quiz packs toprepare.

If you need any further information pleasecontact me on 0208 738 7254 (work) or 0208841 2598 (home) or [email protected]

Last year 80 members attended and the bestteam won well over £150 on the night. If we canbetter that attendance then it promises to be atruly great event indeed!

Look forward to seeing you there!

National Football (or Hackney Marshes all over again)

Oxford lined up their international squad, someoriginating from as far afield asHolland! Ahead of them awaited atleast three qualifying matches, then the semis then the finals. Theweather was bleak, wet, dull and abit cool. The team tended not tonotice this as they eyed up theopposition in their league; Barkingand Dagenham, big, dangerouslooking and fielding three subs;Hillingdon simply looking a littlewary, and Coventry with theirbattle cries enacted on pitch!

Our first match was against Hillingdon, I er...lost count of how many goals we put past them! Not a lot more to add to that one, sorry. Next upthe team we had to beat, Barking andDagenham. An early goal was gained, the fightcontinued up and down the pitch, the ref askingfor it to be downgraded to a struggle at somepoint! A second goal was placed inagainst them, and then a little toomuch relaxation resulted in a returngoal from the kick off putting themback in with a chance. Theincreasingly desperate 'struggle'continued until full time with Oxfordgaining a 2-1 victory... YES!

Coventry actually managed to putmore goals past our net than theothers staying level for the first part of the firsthalf until Oxford wore them down, again thescore escapes me, but Oxford won.

We attained the semi finals, our opposition fromacross the wire was Slough group, amanoeuvrable team with some young blood in itas well as experience. In the game Oxfordproved the more organised team managing to

close the opposition down enough and makesome clear space in front of goal.A slow but steady stream of goalssaw Oxford through to the final...against; Barking and Dagenham.

Oxford again managed to squeezean early goal past them but after alot of fighting, yes we were back atthat level of intensity, then theyfinally got an equaliser into our net.The fight continued, perhapsOxford pushed a bit stronger beingup the opposition end a bit more.Certainly a few tackles came in

harder than any yet seen. At 1-1 the final whistleblew as Oxford’s main goal scorer was choppeddown in a tackle and removed from play. Notackles seen I will add, were ever more than aneager attempt at the ball, at no time did I seeanything in any tackle that looked like anattempt on another player. There was one shirt

grabbing noted preventing a breakaway from with the ball once, but thatwas all that I witnessed. Penalty shootout time... YUK! Given however ourtwo star players were now eitherdeparted or injured it was our bestoption anyway. The long and the shortof it? My goal attempt was saved, I letin all attempts in goal! Congratulationsto Barking and Dagenham.

We retired for a marvellous spread of food, if Ido say so myself. Aside from all those behindthe organising and refereeing of the event Ishould like to also thank all those whom played.I saw a very good spirited and essentially cleanstandard of play and was impressed.

Editor’s Column

Hello everybody, and welcome to the ‘NewLook’ Plus News. This is my first edition and I'mvery proud to take over at the helm of ourNational Magazine.

I'd like to start by thanking everybodywho has sent in articles and pictures. Ihave been really encouraged by thevolume of material sent in. I would like toadd special thanks to former editor PeterSharples for grooming me into theposition, Mark Hewson for helpingfinalise the issue, and Christine and Suein the HQ for doing all the copying anddistribution. With family insisting I take a week'sbreak in a boat off the coast of France (whocould refuse?) and also last minute preparationsfor the Treasure Hunt to be made, I have had toget this issue out much faster than normal and Ido appreciate all the help that has been offered.

Please continue to keep the articles andpictures coming, I do keep them all from the

riddles to the radical proposals for our Future, and my promise to you is to squeeze as much inas I possibly can. Don't wait until the deadlinesare approaching, post it to me while it's fresh inthe mind.

Meanwhile I'd be interested in any new ideas forthe magazine or general feedback youmay have, whether praiseworthy or'constructive', who knows the best pointsof view may find their way into a futureissue!

Bye for now, and hope to see many ofyou in London on July 3rd, for the 4thAnnual Treasure Hunt!

Focus on Development…. Focus on Development…. Focus on DevA former Area Development Officer has opened two groups and here

he explains how anybody can do the same…

As an Area Development officer I took this roleseriously but slowly, collecting other people'sthoughts and collating all their ideas together, visiting all the groups I could. I gave positivefeedback to these groups that I worked with. Also I suggested to groups things that work, likea notice board with forthcoming events, goodpublicity, and web sites.

Listening to people it seemed Southern Areawere missing groups in certain places andwanting a new direction for all new groupsunder my wing. Bournemouth andWinchester seemed a great idea, pluslooking at papers showed they didn't havesocial groups already.

Finding a venue took a little time, I just simplywent around with mates looking to see if theplace was trendy, enjoyable, asking others andusing the network of support of pubs I have inSouthampton, also considering free offers, howthat pub may help us gain new members etc. When I was Chair of So’ton Friends our birthdayevent saw us get mega discounts and only 1member couldn't attend out of 22!

When I ran groups before I checked where andwhen I displayed things, used “What's On”guides, and gained a helpful publicity list.Southern Area helped us with the display boardyou saw at the ANC and leaflets also provedvery helpful. We had a notice-board with groupdetails, and publicised using websites, onlinesupport, and good programmes which were thensent out around the local area in take-aways,supermarkets etc. Telling friends also helps!

We spoke to tourist information centres, landlords, people in the area, and theSouthern Area Chair. Area helped with a£150 grant as well as leaflets and postersdesigned by Tina and Adrian.

In all new groups you get a mixed reaction:some nights low and others high, the thing is notto get down about the low nights but carry onand be happy with the high nights. Never be like“Oh there are no members let's go home” or“That was pants” or people won’t come back;stay positive and focused and enjoy the goodtimes.

Midland Area Paintball … A View from the Trenches!

The site is very well provisioned with 'play' areasincluding a two storey Wild West town and real'downed' helicopter. Add to this functionalequipment and good marshalling, all thatremains is a decent opposition.

Ah yes, the opposition. Terminators through andthrough, a marshal required to get most of themoff the field each time. Their surprising ability toregenerate exceeded that of the mythical trolleven having been sent off. I heard their gunammunition was not necessarily paint. Furthereven when dead they had an amazing ability toshoot from the grave, and then we got into thepistol whipping phase too. The opposition wereremoved from the field at lunch time.

The food was of the best quality I have had atany paintball site, and a wider choice, just not somuch of it.

The afternoon was most enjoyable. While onecould recount any individual action for pagesand pages we'll just limit it to the two 'man of thematch' awards. For the 18+ side Chris 'machinegun' Porter whose steady stream of firethroughout the day cowed much of theopposition. Does it have the same effect on yourbank manager Chris? And for the 'new'opposition whom required a couple of subs fromour team Dave 'flag raiser' Filer for his gracefularching dive into the well and its commensurateechoing thud. By the way Dave the flag wasmeant to go up the pole not join you in the well.

At £55 for the day total (in my case, perhaps notChris’s), it made for a great afternoon after a notso brilliant morning. Did we win or did we lose? Ihave no idea and I don't care, we took part!

North Thames & Chiltern Party

The day was Saturday 22nd May and theHavering Girls, Nikki, Jane and Lorraine werepreparing for the NT&C Party. It was advertisedas drinking and dancing til 2am, so how couldthey not go? After a hard day of packing, painting their nails and deciding which handbaggoes with which pair of shoes, they departed forBicketwood Country Club.

Armed with their eyeliners and driving an EscortCabriolet they ventured along the M25 to StAlbans.

The party was fantastic! The beer flowed(although not literally as these ladies only drunkvodka) and the DJ bounced out many a goodtune. The Havering Girls drank (to excess),danced, met loads of new people and had thetime of their lives.

After everyone was kicked out at closing, theystaggered the 100 yards back to theircomfortable and value for money rooms in thelodge. They were sad the night had ended anddidn’t want to go home.

However this proved to be reality when theydiscovered they were unable to start their car onthe Sunday morning! Luckily enough the newNational Chairman was on hand to offer the girlshis assistance by calling the AA. Although itwould have been beneficial to all concerned hadhe unplugged his hands free kit rather thanrepeatedly ring the AA thinking his phone hadbroken!

With the AA on route the sit in commenced. With only one cigarette and half a bottle ofEvian between them they waited an hour in thesweltering heat for roadside assistance. Whenthe AA man did turn up the girls were mortifiedto discover he wasn’t as fit as he is in theadverts! Trading Standards will hear about this.

After spending the entire morning in theBricketwood Country Club Car Park, which israther nice this time of year, the Havering Girlsfinally managed to make their way home toEssex arriving 23 hours after setting off the daybefore. Surely this must be the longest discotrip in history!
