A one-of-a-kind, annual, family event, The Big Build fulfills a unique niche within the Washington, D.C. area, introducing boys and girls to a wide range of respected professions, while educating them about a key aspect of our everyday lives—the built environment. And, it’s great fun!

The Big Build attracts more than 3,000 visitors each fall to the National Building Museum for interactive demonstrations of contemporary and traditional building arts, as well as hands-on activities and games. Held this year on Saturday, September 22, 2012, this free festival celebrates building craftspeople and their skills—from heavy equipment operators who dig basements and nimble roofers to glass designers, stone carvers, and landscape architects who provide the finishing touches.

Among the numerous activities held this day, about 25 craftspeople will offer hands-on activities in crafts such as art glass design, stone carving, gilding, blacksmithing, and fine woodworking. Building trades represented will include bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, straw bale and log cabin construction, and roof thatching. Architects, designers, and plumbers will also be on hand to give advice to budding professionals. In fact, a total of more than 160 of these volunteers are expected to donate their time and expertise. A highlight each year is a “petting zoo” of construction machinery displayed on the Museum’s handsome front lawn, where kids can climb behind the wheel of a cement truck or bulldozer.

The Big Build is presented in partnership with the Associated General Contractors of America.
