 Hatch 1  National Defense and Patriotism: The Daughters of the American Revolutions Campaign to Denigrate Pro-Disarmament Female Organizations Following the close of World War I, the international co mmunity and the American public were forced to come to terms with the bloodiest war in human history. Fears that similar warfare could plague humanity led to unprecedented levels of international dialogue, treaties, and discussions of disarmament. Following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, concerns about the spread of communism, socialism, and Bolshevism began to become increasingly common and many social and political activists came under criticism for their seemingly unpatriotic practices. Recently enfranchised by the 19 th  Amendment, female political organizations became vocal  proponents of both pro-disarmament and pro-military expansion policies throug hout the 1920‟s. The international presence and role of the United States was continually adapting throughout the 1920‟s as the Rep ublican controlled Congress sought  to find America‟s new niche in the post-war world which allowed for extensive discussion on the role and importance of military capabilities for the United States. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the leading conservative female p olitical and social organization of the time, actively campaigned in favor a strong and expansive military and sought to concretely link such an institution with the no tion of patriotism and America. Jane Addams and the Women‟s International League for Peace and Fre edom (WILPF) were  perhaps the most vocal proponents of disarmament and campaigned that notion of  patriotism and support of a large military were mutually e xclusive ideals. Through public discourse, private dialogue, and mass publications the DAR sought to denigrate and ruin the public image and influence o f the WILPF and Jane Addams in order to further their
