Video PreView extra! This colorful square is your link to adven-ture. Called an “image tag” (because it uses Microsoft Tag technology), each tag enables your smartphone to play a video of the expedition you’re reading about on pages 14 to 80. Here’s how to download the free app you need:

1. Open your smartphone’s browser and go to http://gettag.mobi

2. Follow the simple free download process to get the mobile app.

3. After you’ve downloaded the app, try it out.

4. Using the app, carefully snap or scan any tag and your browser will take you to a video. For example, train your smart-phone on the tag on page 14, in the Antarctica itinerary description, and your browser will take you to a player showing the Antarctica video. Exploring is fun!

Dear Traveler,This brochure is obviously commercially motivated. It’s intended to stimulate your desire to join one of our expeditions. So anything I write here can be construed as self-serving. However, I am, and my colleagues are, driven in large part by our beliefs, our ideas. And I happen to believe that going on an expedition is a form of brain therapy, so the subject of this letter comes directly from that core belief.

Have you noticed how much is being written and publicly discussed lately about the brain? I’m fascinated by it. Two recent examples: the Charlie Rose brain series, which I’ve followed with great interest. And a New York Times article, Digital Devices Deprive Brain of Needed Downtime by Matt Richtel, which I just experienced — literally.

I took my two children to Galápagos in August, and simply because I neglected to make the tech adjustment necessary, my iPhone didn’t work there. At first, I was quite concerned. (According to others, quite agitated.) There were a number of business communications I needed to receive and I felt I couldn’t be delinked that way. Then, as I thought about it, I reasoned that there was an internet connection aboard the ship, I could be reached and respond if necessary. And suddenly I relaxed. Instead of staring at my device, anticipating communications coming in, I looked at my children and communicated with them and the other wonderful people onboard who were also busily being present, in magical Galápagos.

I know that I came back revitalized because that’s what always happens to me after spending time getting the “tonic of wildness.” But I also came back to work with a better brain — a more spacious capacity to think and an enhanced ability to focus on issues.

Needless to say, I recommend it. Go on an expedition — go get what nature never fails to give. And while you’re there, perhaps consider making yourself your own science project. Try delinking yourself from your devices. Know that you can be reached, can stay in touch with friends and family, even your business if you must, but give yourself the life- and brain-enhancing experience of exploring our glorious planet, without the mediation of technology. I promise you’ll have no regrets.

All the best,

Sven-Olof Lindblad

P.S. If you’re interested, the brain series episodes are available at charlierose.com. And the link to the New York Times article is http://tinyurl.com/3x73h7h

After all, we’re taxonomists. An Ursus maritimus (polar bear) is not an Ursus arctos (brown bear), although both are equally cool to see in the wild. There really is something in the name expedition: connotations of history, heroism, discovery. Plus, brains, guts, glory — and a little bit of rock and roll. While much of the difference between an expedition

ElEmEnts of an ExpEditionRegarding Shakespeare’s famous query and response —

“What’s in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” — we’d have to disagree. An expedition by any

other name — tour, cruise — is simply not the same.

and what-it-isn’t is subjective, evocative, a matter of spirit rather than substance, there are certain elements that make it inarguably an expedition. They distinguish it and impart the essential character that makes going on an expedition a matter of both spirit and substance. Here are a few of the elements unique to our expedition style:

expedition team An expedition is led very differently from either a cruise or a tour. On a cruise, for example, the Cruise Director is responsible for ensuring that the day’s activities, usually pre-determined and oft-repeated, happen exactly as programmed. The Captain is responsible for ensuring the ship arrives in port on schedule. There’s little need for interaction, let alone collaboration between them. While an expedition is structured, it is not programmatic. And the

4

Page 7: National Geographic Expeditions

Captain and Expedition Leader (EL) work together continually to respond to conditions to create peak experience opportunities for our guests. While it is highly unlikely a cruise ship would do more than slow down or make an announce-ment, any of our ships will stop and change course to follow a pod

of whales, for example, if it means giving guests a marvelous sighting. And on every day of a voyage, the EL studies the nautical charts to look for landings, not where we always go, but the ideal places to land today — to allow guests the most spontaneity, flexibility, delight and discovery.

Landings Where there is infrastructure — piers, docks, jetties — there is habitation; and often a lack of the pure, wild nature our expeditions are crafted to discover and explore. (Exceptions are many World Heritage sites, or isolated island

sites with oversight management, like the Skelligs off the west coast of Ireland, for example.) All our ships are equipped with Zodiac landing craft to enable us to land anywhere there’s something wonderful to discover. When the EL’s briefing tells us it’s a “wet landing,” rubber boots, or if it’s warm enough, water-friendly sandals are in order. “Dry landing” means we’ll have access to a dock or jetty, so any sensible footwear is appropriate.

tools for exploration Our ships are equipped with tools that enable deeper, richer experi-ences. Every ship carries kayaks for more intimate, personal contact with marvelous geographies. And two ships — National Geographic

Explorer and National Geographic Endeavour — also carry an ROV for exploring the undersea to depths of up to 1,000 feet to reveal the world beneath the ship. Onboard Undersea Specialists dive with video cameras to bring back fascinating footage, giving you a holistic view of the extraordinary regions we explore. And profes-sional Video Chroniclers on all our ships record every facet of an expedition — enabling you to obtain a one-of-a-kind “souvenir” with lasting meaning.

recap Each evening at cocktail hour, the Expedition Leader convenes everyone in the Lounge for Recap, a hallmark of our unique expedi-tion style, designed to review the day’s events. Various Naturalists or guest Luminaries give invari-ably entertaining presentations, related to where we’ve been or what we’ve seen that day, providing dimension and context, and add new chapters to the unfolding voyage narrative. Our Expedition Photographers might share some shots. The Undersea Specialist might present some video footage. And the following day’s plans are described. This mysteriously engaging ritual is the glue that binds a collection of individuals into an expedition community with a rewarding esprit de corps. While Recap is difficult to describe (it’s a “you had to be there” affair) once experienced, guests maintain, it’s remembered forever as an expedi-tion highlight.

So, if you’d like to experience an authentic expedition, and the elements that make it one, plan to join us — anywhere you’d like to go.

Page 9: National Geographic Expeditions

Now, every ship in the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic fleet will offer guests an unprecedented service: an onboard certified Photo Instructor. Guests of any interest or skill level will be able to rely on the assistance of our trained Instructor who has completed a training program developed by Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic. These instructors will be available for help operating your camera model, instruction on elements of composition and useful shooting tips — everywhere we travel.

In addition, guests booked on our expeditions will have password access to a private section on www.expeditions.com containing a lode of photo-centric content: tips, self-assignments, video tutorials by National Geographic Photographers and more. Plus packing lists and gear recommendations for all kinds of expedition shooting situations and for all kinds of photographers, from beginner to advanced. The site will also enable our guests to share their photographs with other members of the Lindblad-National Geographic community, compete for photo honors, create books as lasting keepsakes of their expeditions and much more. We’ve also arranged exclusive values from a leading photo retailer.

In addition, we’ll continue to offer select Photo Expeditions, providing enthusiasts with a roster of departures that provide custom, photo-centric opportunities with National Geographic Photographers — as well as our certified Photo Instructors — as travel companions and resident experts with skills and stories to share.

Our ships travel to the world’s most photogenic places. And throughout our 40-plus year history, there has been a symbiotic link between our expeditions and photography. Since 2006, the Lindblad-National Geographic alliance

has given our guests unique access to National Geographic Photographers as travel companions and photo advisors in the most extraordinary locations on the planet.

the

curiosity is mutual

In 2009 virtually everyone in our organization was galvanized by an article in the July 12th New York Times Sunday magazine. Written by Charles Seibert, it was entitled “Watching Whales Watching Us,” and it detailed a phenomenon we’d been witnessing for several years now — the manifest curiosity of whales. It was a wonderfully well-researched, well-written article that contained a quote from Toni Frohoff, a whale behaviorist, that we’ve repeated ever since: “Those who would reject out of hand the idea that whales are intelligent enough to consciously interact with us haven’t spent enough time around whales.” The photos shown here are but a few from a rapidly expanding archive that documents our seasons in Baja California among the gray whales — and the jubilant encounters and mutual friendliness we experience there.

and now, the bears? This past July guests aboard National Geographic Explorer in Arctic Svalbard were stunned into rapt silence by the curiosity of this fearless young bear. The stills of these magical moments of mutual curiosity are marvelous (Cheers to our Expedition Photographers!) but we think you’d be missing something vital if you don’t take a moment to watch the video, shot by our onboard Video Chronicler.

Page 12: National Geographic Expeditions

At the start of the trip, I explained to our guests about my whale skin sampling project and showed them my equipment. Since we operated in full view of the ship,

guests were able to watch the whales and our work.

I am collaborating with a colleague from NOAA Fisheries, Robert Pitman, who is based in La Jolla, CA. Bob has been working on Antarctic killer whales for ten years and has discovered at least three, potentially four, ecotypes. On our Antarctic expeditions we routinely encounter two of these types. We see “Type A” whales in ice free waters and they are known to prey mainly on Antarctic Minke whales. In the Antarctic Peninsula, we see “Type B” whales that have a white cape and feed mainly on seals and penguins.

I’ve always thought our trips would offer a great opportunity to collect samples, since we go to areas that are expensive for scientists to work in. Bob and I had previously worked together and he was very excited about the possibilities. He graciously added me to his various research permits and sent me some sampling gear.

The killer whales sampled this season are new to Bob’s catalog, so will add to his study. Next season, I am hoping to work with Bob again — to sample animals around South Georgia, in addition to the Antarctic. Hopefully, it will provide another wonderful opportunity to share “science in action” with our guests.

I am extremely grateful to Lindblad Expeditions for their continued support of the project; to the ship’s Expedition Leader and Captain for allowing me sampling time; to the Naturalists who acted as Zodiac drivers for me; and to Mike Nolan and Naturalist Mike Greenfelder for their photo-ID shots, required for any animals sampled. — Stephanie Martin, Staff Naturalist

“ I use a compound crossbow to shoot an arrow that floats with a small steel tip. The arrow hits the whale and bounces back out with the steel tip containing a small amount of skin and blubber ... The collected samples are kept frozen and the skin is used for genetic studies, while the blubber is analyzed for toxicology research.”

THE POLAR REGIONSThe hauntingly beautiful Arctic to the north. The dashingly adventurous Antarctic to the south. The common denominators? The midnight sun during our expedition seasons — and the ice-adapted National Geographic Explorer, the world’s ultimate expedition ship.

Anything but serene parkland, the ice is the last true wilderness. It takes knowledge and experience to explore it safely, and we have both in spades — acquired through pioneering “citizen explorer” travel to Antarctica and 40+ subsequent years of experience there. We’re one of the few expedition companies who knows Arctic Svalbard inside and out. Last season’s count, unduplicatable for various reasons, was a staggering total of 229 bears. But it’s not the number of bears we discover that’s important, it’s the fascinating bear behavior we enable our guests to witness: lone males hunting, mothers with young cubs, and older cubs at rollicking play, tumbling in their blue-white world.

Travel with us to see beyond the surface of the ice and genuinely experience these extraordinary geographies. Anything less is just a drive-by.

Left: Polar bear in Arctic Svalbard; top: kayaking in Antarctica offers breathtaking views of the ice; above: guests get a unique vantage point for photographing king penguins.

ANTARCTICA ABOVE & BELOW: ExPLORE THE UNDERSEA TOOI am told that recent events in the Gulf of Mexico have created a new interest in ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles). Friends have said it’s too bad I am currently on National Geographic Explorer because experienced ROV operators are in high demand. I am very happy where I am, thank you!

Lindblad Expeditions is in its tenth year of using ROVs to greatly enhance our ability to experience and interpret the marine environment through which we travel. I am often asked if we find new species with our ROV. My truthful answer is: We can’t be sure — we only take pictures. In science research, species are described and identified by physical specimens, which we do not collect. What we do is observe and take video of natural communities. And it’s this very ability to make observations on natural commu-nities all over the world, particularly in polar regions, that excites the marine scientists with whom we interact.

In Antarctica, we’ve helped research scientists learn what lives at greater depths than at sites where they can SCUBA dive. On one ROV dive, we were lucky enough to see high densities of multi-armed sea stars perched on pinnacles — catching krill on the back of their arms using the thousands of tiny “pinchers” that occur there!

We have also made repeated ROV dives where giant tabular icebergs regularly ground. I was told nothing could possibly live there, but we have discovered an abundance of life. It appears that this repeated disturbance by the ice is enrich-ing the environment by overturning and mixing the bottom. Now this is an area of active investigation by scientists.

I am often surprised at how much we, Undersea Specialists and our guests, have experienced of the sea, even compared to the knowledge of specialist researchers. There have even been creatures I have yet to identify. New species? All is possible when your ROV lets you go deeper into the little-known wilderness — the sea.

— Dennis Cornejo, Undersea Specialist

see how the rov brIngs the undersea to LIfe at www.expedItIons.com/rov

National Geographic Explorer’s ROV is pressure rated to 1,000 feet below the surface of the sea. Not a deep ocean machine like those operating in the Gulf of Mexico that requires an entire ship for their deployment and operation, it’s deployed and operated from a Zodiac.

GALAPAGOSAs close as you can get to the extraordinary, Galápagos is also the one place on earth guaranteed to free your inner child — making it a great destination for families to truly share an experience.

Swim, snorkel, kayak and walk among the marvels. Giant tortoises roaming through the tender grass of the highlands. Marine iguanas with the aura of pre-history. Flightless cormorants, blue-footed boobies, Galápagos penguins. Pink flamingos grazing in a moody lagoon. And sea lions galore, lumbering on the beaches and balletic underwater. The thrill of observing wildlife is maximized by their total lack of fear — it is otherwordly to observe nature, and have nature observe you back.

Travel with us and you’ll have the benefit of our 40+ years in Galápagos — deep roots in the region, and deep respect for and investment in its well-being — and the unparalleled expertise of our expedition team. Instead of just getting a glimpse of the enchanted isles — you’ll see Galápagos from an insider’s perspective, go deeper, learn more and, if you choose, take home a professionally produced DVD shot by a Video Chronicler that captures all the highlights of your adventure forever.

THE AMERICASGray whales in the lagoons of Baja California. Howler monkeys perched in a rain forest bower. An Alaskan brown bear clutching a gasping salmon. Or the lush riverscape of the Amazonian blackwater lagoons. These images, readily seen in the pages of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, are iconic, richly evocative. And if they were among the images you saw on one of our expeditions, chances are, you’d go home happy.

But our expeditions take you even deeper, beyond the expected into a uniquely immersive experience of diverse American environments, using all the tools for exploration at our disposal — hydrophones, underwater cameras, kayaks, Zodiacs, and the hearts and minds of our expert expedition staff. You’ll see more, do more, know more and have more to remember.

Travel with us for peak moments — to see what you came to see and to find what

you didn’t know existed. To experience nature through the twin lenses of a planned itinerary and spontaneity — to make the most of all the miraculous opportunities that happen.

Alaska is more popular than ever, but we continue to ply the waters off the beaten path, so the Alaska we share with you is timeless, mythic, and true. We hope you’ll choose this spring to discover it with us, because there’s definitely something special about our April and May voyages. Alaska is never fresher, and never more filled with possibility and promise. And contrary to “conventional wisdom” the weather is often delightful, with day after day of clear skies. But don’t take our word for it – check out the Daily Expedition Reports from April and May 2010 voyages at www.expeditions.com/der. We can’t presume to predict what nature will do, of course, but these reports are typical of what we’ve experienced in 29 years of voyages at this time of year.

DISCOVER SOUTHEAST ALASKA THIS SPRING

Join us on our 12-day Alaska, British Columbia & the San Juan Islands, April 26 and take $1000 off our regular rates, plus receive complimentary airfare between Seattle and Alaska

Or, choose our 8-day Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness May 14, 21, & 22 to take $500 off our regular prices, plus receive complimentary round-trip airfare between Seattle and Alaska

And on 8-day Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness May 28, 29; June 4 & 5, receive complimentary round-trip airfare between Seattle and Alaska.

EUROPE, THE AZORES & THE MEDITERRANEANWhether you seek a blend of culture and nature, like that offered by our British & Irish Isles or Island Odyssey expeditions; or a deep steep in culture and history, like our European Odyssey, Historic Baltic or Greece expeditions, count on these immersive expeditions to pro-vide a lifetime’s worth of peak experiences.

There are many companies you might travel with to any of these destinations. But there is no other that can create the unique itineraries we offer. The balance of timing and docent-quality guidance — the caliber of the Archaeologists, Naturalists and Historians we provide to accompany you, and to help you create a cohesive narrative, out of what might otherwise be merely a string of enjoyably connected days. Or the sheer number and variety of highlights — along with our signature flexibility that allows us to take advantage of thrilling opportunities that may arise.

Guests who’ve taken these trips marvel — at what they saw and did and learned — and at the fact that they’d already been to one or more of these sites. Yet seeing them with us revealed unglimpsed facets. And that’s, we say, the point: our expedition travel style makes fresh discovery eternally possible.

DISCOVER THE BEST OF ANCIENT & MODERN EGYPT

We’ve been exploring Egypt for years, and unlike many of our other destinations, it gets plenty of visitors. So, how do we make our journeys there so distinctive that sophisticated travelers will choose to experience Egypt expedition-style?

It’s through a combination of elements: well thought-out itin-eraries; some of the best guides to be found anywhere; superb, well-located hotels; private flights

within Egypt; and a fine Nile ship that’s chartered exclusively for our guests, so that you have the run of the ship.

Almost everyone is curious about Egypt. Who designed the pyramids and grand temples? How were the stones hoisted? When was mummification perfected? On a Lindblad journey, outstanding Egyptologists will answer all of your questions.

pEtRa: lost CitY oF stonEJordan possesses some of the most astonishing and best-preserved sites of antiquity. The best known is the vast city of Petra, whose sublime monuments were carved 2,000 years ago. Temples of monumental grace and scale were cut directly into its sandstone cliffs and have weathered into warm shades of rosy red. Our expert guide will reveal how the Nabateans built an ingenious system of waterways in the midst of the desert. And they built a civilization that stood at the crossroads of the ancient Near East, a center for com-merce as the spice routes and trading trails of the time all flowed through Petra.
