Once users accept the Terms and Conditions above, they will be presented with the NHD homepage
(Fig.3):
Fig.3. – NHD homepage
This is the main navigation screen for the NHD.
To keep your work safe, always logout of the NHD once necessary tasks are completed or leaving
work for the day. The logout button is located within the hamburger menu at the top-left corner
of the homepage.
From the main navigation screen, there are a range of possible options to select. These will
subsequently be explored in greater detail within this guide:
Button Brief Description
Custom Search
Custom search enables users to search and tailor the data contained within the NHD, in a form that does not adhere to the traditional industry report format.
Standard Reports
Industry standard reports are contained within this section. These options are searchable via Route, ELR, mileage or Maintenance Delivery Unit (MDU).
My Reports
Select from a list of saved reports.

Fig.4. – Custom Search
Users can then select the desired Route, ELR and optional mileages/yards.
Route: Selecting by ‘Route’ will provide a drop-down list containing all eleven routes.
ELR: The ELR field allows for the possibility of searching by Engineer’s Line Reference. Simply
enter the required code and left-click the adjacent magnifying glass button to search.
Alternatively, leaving the field blank and left-clicking this button will open a pop-up window
allowing for the filter, search and selection of multiple ELRs and their locations arranged in
alphabetical order.

miles and yards in order to restrict the search to more relevant results. A suggested entry
may appear based on defined ELR mileages.

9 National Hazard Directory (NHD) Designed and developed by OnTrac Ltd on behalf of Network Rail – www.on-trac.co.uk
Left-clicking the ‘Run Report’ button will generate the search results based on the applicable
criteria. In the example below, a search for ‘ECM1’ between 0.0000 to 3.0792 generates 520 Hazards
(Fig.7):
Fig.7. – Customised search results
Users can amend the search criteria by left-clicking the ‘Amend Search’ button within the ‘Search
Criteria’ form.
Entering a report name into the ‘My Reports’ field and left-clicking ‘Save’ will allow the user to save
their current search criteria under a given name. This enables quick access to this search criterion
under the ‘My Reports’ button on the main navigation screen (please see Fig.3).
The ‘Export’ button above the table of results will automatically trigger a .csv file download of the
search results.
The ‘Print Friendly’ button takes the table of results and converts it to a printer-friendly format that
can be taken and used elsewhere.
Beneath these options, a table is generated that displays all the listed hazards for the search
criterion defined. A total number of hazards found is also displayed.

Standard Reports
Selecting Standard Reports presents the user with seven reporting options:
Access Points
Appendix A – ELRs
Extract for ELR
Extract for Site of Work
Generic Hazards
Red Zone Working Prohibitions
Section by MDU
These reports provide access to Network Rail’s standard Hazard Directory information and are all
searchable by Route, ELR, mileage or Maintenance Delivery Unit (MDU).
Access Points
When selecting a chosen Route from the drop-down menu, a list of related ELRs will auto-populate
the subsequent field. When users then select an ELR from the list, the total mileage of this ELR is
then populated (Fig.8):
Fig.8. – Access Point search menu
Users can then select the Type of Access Point required: either Any, Vehicle, Pedestrian or Road-Rail.
Future specifics can then be provided around the necessary mileage for larger ELRs to find more
applicable Hazards.
By left-clicking the red ‘Search’ button, users will be provided with a table of results (Fig.9):

Fig.9 – Access point details returned (results shortened for example purposes)
Left-clicking either the Easting or Northing references will provide a popup window containing a
geospatial image with a drop-pin for the location of that specific Access Point.
Users are also granted the option to Export these results into a .CSV format by left-clicking the
‘Export’ button.
Appendix A – ELRs
This report provides a list of ELRs searchable by Route.
Upon a given search, results are generated in a table containing ELRs, Route, Start and End Mileages
and the relevant Control Room.
Extract for Site of Work
This report provides a list of hazards for a specific site of work within a broader ELR. This is achieved
by searching for an ELR within a Route, then providing mileage parameters.
Upon a given search, a table of results is generated containing ELR/Name, Start, End, Hazard
Description, Local Name and Track.
Extract for ELR
