Prof. G.R.C. Reddy, Director, NITC 7th August, 2008

I am glad to note that the Alumni association of NIT/REC Calicut is

bringing out its latest newsletter. In this, the association has taken all efforts to bring to you reports of the recent developments and activities in the institution.

I am happy and proud to let you know of the multitude of innovative ventures that are ongoing. These include construction of various state-of the- art buildings and infrastructure, focused on achieving academic excellence in all respects, introduction of a number of new academic programmes, and an excellent effort on placement and entrepreneurship development, among so many others. Our students are being rated very high in the national and international academic scenario and in various job sectors. I am sure that the alumni, being part of the institution as much as any one inside the campus would keep these developments and pursuits for quality close to their heart and take pride of it.

I wish this newsletter all success. G. R. C. Reddy Dear alumni friends,

After the global get together we had in December 2006 at NITC, I am sorry that we hardly had any official communication. We are coming to you with a news letter after two years. I hope all of you will forgive us for the delay caused due to the hectic academic and non academic schedules we have now in the ever vibrant campus of your old REC, now the NITC.

Let me take this opportunity to inform you that in the year 2011 we are going to have the Golden Jubilee celebration of the alma mater. A suggestion came from many corners is to build and dedicate a very modern high-tech convention center cum guest house to the alma mater in the year 2011 as a sweet symbol of our affection. I request all of you to contribute liberally for the realization of this ambitious project. We are in the process of registering a trust for the above and we will approach each of you once the official formalities are over.

The campus and departments are changing every day with new developments in terms of infrastructure, new courses and research projects. Please try to visit the campus as frequently as possible to quench your nostalgia.

It is high time for the alumni of CREC/NITC to warm up for the Golden

Jubilee celebrations of our Institute as it is in the year 2011. I expect all your support and contributions for the same. I am happy to say that many RECCAA members have already done the online registration at the institute website (www.nitc.ac.in). This will help each alumnus to get the present details of his/her batch mates/seniors/juniors. I request all those CREC/NITC alumni who have not done the online registration to do it as early as possible. I take this opportunity to thank all RECCAA members for your support and help in the achievements of our alma mater. The next GBM of RECCAA will be on 23rd August, 2008. Kindly attend this.

Wishing you all the best With love Dhanaraj K.J. ([email protected]) Dear friends,

It is with great excitement that we bring out this edition of the Alumni

news-letter. The institute is going through remarkably important phases of development, after its transformation into an institution of national importance. While taking part in the innovative activities which have made this institute one of the most noticed and visible technological institutions in India, academic life has become ever more hectic for every one on campus. Still, we have always felt it our responsibility to bring news from the campus to the alumni, for whom the institution is so dear, and who are always an essential part of the campus.

We would feel extremely happy if this goal has been achieved with some degree of completeness – that would certainly bring a sense of satisfaction to our minds, at the end of the long struggle we had with time, in bringing this edition out.

We wish you a happy reading time.

Technology Business Incubator (TBI)

National Institute of Technology, Calicut is one of the educational Institutions which gave sufficient importance to entrepreneurship right from early eighties. In 1988 it established an Entrepreneurship Development Cell in order to introduce the idea of entrepreneurship to the minds of students.

Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India sanctioned a Technology Business Incubator (TBI) for NITC in the year 2003. NITC earmarked a building with 450 sq metres area for TBI which is now renovated with state of the art communication and computer network. The faculties are rented to incubatees at concessional rate. The incubatees are free to avail the technical support of faculty, institute library & laboratories based on the norms laid down by institute.

The TBI as wand when required arrange training and consultancy assistance to the incubatees based on their requirement. TBI also networked with other institutions like IIMK, DOEACC, TiE – Kerala, other TBIs etc. so that the incubatees can contact them as and when required.

NITC – TBI also provide seed capital assistance. DST has sanctioned a seed capital assistance of Rs. 45 lakhs, which is distributed among the incubatees as soft loan. At present there are 11 incubate, units have already graduated. The interested alumni can contact Ms. Preethi. M (Ph: 0495-2286605) for details.

Writer and Actor Sri. V.K. Sreeraman inaugurated RAGAM ‘08

Lighting the Lamp: From the inaugural function of RAGAM ‘08

Ragam ‘08

Taking the annual dose of addiction one step further, the 2008 edition of Ragam was a feast to the senses with four nights of fun, frenzy and entertainment. Spread over the five genres: Dance and Dramatics, Literary, Fine arts, Musical and General the fest was truly a canvas for the participants to showcase their finesse and thus the theme 'My Muse, My Canvas'. The four days 26 to 29 of March saw more than 2000 participants representing all the major colleges in the state competing against each other to carve out their place as the best.

The fest was inaugurated by the veteran film actor V.K. Sreeraman in a graceful ceremony in the OAT which was decorated by a hand made drape reflecting the theme. It was followed by the inaugural performance by 'The Raghu Dixit Project' an Indian rock band. The first event of Ragam 08, antakshari saw jam-packed aryabhata as participants showcased their expertise in Malayalam songs. The other major events of day 1 were the prelims of Western Orchestra held in the special stage and Dumb C. The first night of the 2008 edition was enlivened by the colours and grandeur of the Choreo Nite in the OAT. As the competing teams mixed classical with western in performances of grace and perfection, it was a real feast to the senses. The victorious team was from Trissur Medical College who made it twice in a row.

Day 2 started with the finals of the Western Orchestra and Malayalam Jam. Malayalam Jam which is a traditional crowd puller was no exception this time also with participants jesting their way to the top in their one minute of fame. The events in the informals stage were also in the full swing on the second day. The pick of the day were Solo Dance and Duplicate which were held back to back in aryabhata. The hall was jam-packed to every inch for the whole afternoon. But all these proved to be a prelude as the curtains were raised to the biggest event of Ragam: Pro Show by Karthik. The young

singer rendered popular hits in five languages with the Guitarist Bennet Rolland. With Karthik at the edge of the ramp singing with the audience with every number improvised for the stage, it was two hours of awesome partying.

English Jam and Movie Spoof had the stages filled to the brim while Eastern Orchestra appealed to the esoteric ones. English Jam although it spanned right from the morning to six in the evening, the audience were glued to their seats throughout as the participants tested their wits and humour with each other and an even better moderator. Street play had participants raising boiling social issues to the forefront. The event saw our college team winning by a clear margin. The night events started with rock show by ‘Whitenoiz’, Bangalore based white metal

band. The concluding event of the fest, the fashion show was rightly christened 'Crème de la Crème' as each team showcased their best. While our college won the event, the costumes of Rajagiri Institute of Technology which were made solely from rags like paper plates, plastic bags etc were impressive. It was NITC itself which came first in the total points tally. But the rolling trophy for the 'Best Outstation College' went to Trissur Medical College which came second and gave a praiseworthy show both on and off the stage. The fest concluded with the awarding of the trophy to the team captain of the victorious college by the Director and Staff in Charge and vote of thanks by the Programme Committee head and a promise. A promise that is made in the heart of every NITian as the curtain slowly falls on this fest every year; a promise to come back again with a bigger and better Ragam next year.

Golden Jubilee

will be celebrating its

Golden Jubilee in 2011.

Based on the suggestions that came up, the

general body has decided to have a noble

contribution in the form of convention

center cum Alumni Guest House.

In addition to providing accommodation

to alumni visiting the campus for various

purposes, the centre will provide the

institute a state of the art facility for

conducting activities like international

conferences, convocation, etc.

The registration of the Golden Jubilee

Trust is under process in the office of the

Registrar of Societies. Collection of fund

from alumni members for this modest

venture will commence as soon as this

process is over.

Time and statistics of many world class

institutes and universities have indicated that

strength of alumni is foremost for raising an

institute to its highest limits. We are

expected to have a total alumni strength of

20,000 by year 2011.

The guest house cum convention centre

can be made a reality if each alumni member

contributes an average of Rs.5,000/-

generously that amounts to 10 crore rupees.

Rising to the need of the hour to make our

dream possible, I am sure we alumni will

stand together for this noble cause. Please

feel free to contact us.
