Welcome Summit Attendees to the Georgia Institute of Technology!

On behalf of the administration, faculty, staff, and students here at the Georgia Institute of Technology, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2016. It is an exciting time for Georgia Tech as we continue our role as a national leader in manufacturing research and innovation, and the assistance we provide to small, medium, and large manufacturers locally, statewide, and nationally.

We are very honored to have been selected to host the inaugural National MBE Manufacturers Summit and are pleased that each of you has chosen to participate in this groundbreaking event. Manufacturing is woven into the fabric of Georgia Tech. Since the 1950s when our engineers helped farmers implement new agricultural technologies, Georgia Tech has been at the center of helping industry create the future. Our fundamental research, coupled with our outreach and service to businesses and industries, keeps us at the forefront of new trends and

technologies. The timeless quest of “Creating the Next” is never far from the minds of our students, faculty, researchers, and staff. That is because working today to meet the demands of the future is a Georgia Tech standard. Your participation in the Summit demonstrates your commitment to “Creating the Next” level playing field for our manufacturing community.

Georgia Tech has a rich history in manufacturing. Our research programs and industry outreach led the nation in providing innovation, technical assistance, and training. In addition, my participation on President Obama’s Advanced Manufacturing Partnership Steering Committee has provided Georgia Tech with the opportunity to help shape our nation’s manufacturing policies and programs and make our manufacturers more competitive globally.

It is our hope that this Summit will provide an opportunity for you to share innovative strategies, learn about the latest technological innovations, and network with other colleagues working in similar areas. I encourage you to take full advantage of this opportunity.

Georgia Tech is committed to boosting the continuum of learning, keeping our workforce competitive globally, and partnering with you and your respective companies to create a brighter future for individuals, companies, and our communities.

Best Regards,

G. P. “Bud” PetersonPresident

On behalf of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) and the U.S. Department of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to the

National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2016. This premier manufacturing event is the first of its kind, bringing together minority manufacturers, supply chain decision makers, and sourcing professionals to promote business expansion and supply chain diversity.

Manufacturing is essential to economic growth. With an economic contribution of 2.1 trillion dollars, the manufacturing industry is one of the cornerstones of the U.S. economy. Minority business enterprise (MBE) manufacturers employ hundreds of thousands of workers and grow faster than their non-minority counterparts in the number of firms, employees and gross receipts. As our demographics shift, and minority groups begin to represent the majority of the population, America’s continued global competitiveness depends upon the success and expansion of minority business enterprises in manufacturing.

This summit presents a unique opportunity for minority-owned manufacturing firms to establish partnerships in this dynamic and innovative industry. Together, we can maximize the economic opportunities that are before us. Thank you for your participation, and your continued support of minority business enterprises.

Sincerely,

Alejandra Y. CastilloNational Director

On behalf of the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), MBDA Business Center Network, Georgia

Tech, our staff and volunteers, I’d like to personally welcome you to the inaugural National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2016. This is an exciting time for manufacturing in the U.S. Innovation, technology, and new trends are challenging all manufacturers to think outside of the box.

Your attendance here at the National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2016 is proof that you are willing to explore new ways of operating. Today’s Summit is historic for our MBE manufacturers, MBDA, the MBDA Business Center Network, the corporations and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as we gather for the first time on a national scale to discuss new manufacturing trends and meet corporations and OEMs seeking to do business with MBE manufacturers.

The National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2016 is the outgrowth of a major initiative by MBDA to focus on MBE manufacturers specifically, as our nation focusses on manufacturing in general. Through MBDA’s financial support, selected MBDA Business Centers have launched manufacturing initiatives that include assisting MBE manufacturers with implementing advanced manufacturing; improving technology infrastructures; certifying to the AS9100 standard for the aerospace industry; and developing and launching the Connecting Advanced Manufacturing Program (CAMP) to build a national ecosystem of manufacturers, corporations, OEM executives, university researchers, partners, and stakeholders for the purpose of identifying opportunities, providing research and technology, and educating the ecosystem. The Summit is one of CAMP’s initiatives.

As you move through this day, do so with your eyes and mind wide open. Listen for the nuggets of information you may get from our speakers; think about how you can be more innovative; learn how you can improve your cybersecurity; check out the Poster Walk of MBEs who have solved problems in the area of innovation, productivity, and sustainability; hear from MBE manufacturers who have utilized successful strategies for growth; focus on the opportunities in healthcare, lab to market technologies, and around the globe; utilize this time to meet potential new customers through the Fast Pitch one-on-one meetings and over lunch and finally…network, network, network!

We thank our sponsors who see and support this vision and took a chance on something that has never been done. We applaud you for your willingness to step outside the box. We also thank our staff, volunteers, supporting partners, MBEs, and corporate executives who have given their time and talent to make this Summit a reality.

Lastly, I’d like to thank each of you for attending the inaugural National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2016 and bringing your expertise and enthusiasm to this gathering. As leaders, you have the vision, the knowledge, the wherewithal and the experience to help us pave the way into the future. We could not have accomplished this without your support and leadership.

Best wishes!

Derreck Kayongo and his family fled a civil war in Uganda and settled in Kenya as refugees. He then found his way to the U.S. where he became a

successful entrepreneur as the founder of the Global Soap Project, a program which takes partially used soap from hotels, recycles them into new bars of soap, and redistributes the new bars to vulnerable populations around the world.

Prior to founding the Global Soap Project, Kayongo worked for the American Friends Service Committee as Program Director of the South African Peace Education program until he joined Amnesty International as Regional Director.

Kayongo continued his humanitarian and human rights work at CARE International where he served as Regional Field Coordinator for the South East Region in the policy unit.

Kayongo’s Global Soap Project’s recycling enterprise has partnered with Clean the World to create recycling plants in Las Vegas, Orlando, and Hong Kong with new recycling plants forecast for China and Italy. Today, the Global Soap Project’s distribution operation is active in over 90 countries and the list of participating countries continues to expand. Within the Global Soap Project Recycling Program there are over 5,000 membership hotels in the United States alone. The Global Soap Project has given away more than five million bars of soap to refugees, including people affected by humanitarian disasters like the 2010 Haitian earthquake that left over 100,000 people dead and the recent Ebola health crisis in West Africa.

The Global Soap Project earned an endorsement from the American Hotel and Lodging Association in 2013. Kayongo has won several awards including CNN’s Top Ten Heroes award in 2011 and the prestigious MAXX entrepreneurship award. His highest accolades include receiving the Certificate of Congressional Recognition by Congressman John Lewis and accolades from Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu for his work with Global Soap. 2

Panel 1: How Innovation Drives Growth in the Supply Chain

Innovation can greatly impact supply chain performance. As companies innovate and design for manufacture, assembly, the environment, or other variables, their supply chains must evolve and adapt to accommodate the change. Leaders from top companies will address the changes, challenges, and evolution of their companies’ supply chains as they implement new and innovative technologies, processes, and systems in their companies. How are their supply chains responding? What require-ments do they place on their suppliers? Where does in-novation most likely occur in the supply chain? These and many other questions will be answered by key company representatives.

Panel 2: Staying Competitive in Today’s Global Market: A View from MBE Manufacturers

Breakout Topic 1:

Manufacturing in the Healthcare IndustryThe healthcare industry is experiencing tremendous growth and change due to a host of factors ranging from regulatory/policy, economic and demographic to technol-ogy, mergers and acquisitions and supply chain influenc-es. Supply chain is challenged with how to shrink suppli-ers, cut cost and improve value. Meanwhile, suppliers/manufacturers are getting bigger, thinking more creatively about production, and identifying new growth opportuni-ties and potential partners.

A dynamic and interactive discussion will explore how the world of healthcare manufacturing is changing and strat-egies for growth and success of minority owned manu-facturers in today’s environment. Key points of discussion will include:

• Where are the opportunities for manufacturers in the healthcare industry?

• What are some of the strategies that majority manufactur-ers can employ to grow supplier diversity efforts at the Tier 2 level?

• What are some strategies for success and mentoring that could make MBEs more competitive and provide greater value as manufacturers?

• How can supplier diversity be leveraged to help drive increased participation of MBE manufacturers?

Breakout Topic 2:

Yes, You Can Purchase Technology or Develop Your Own – Access Billions in Federally Funded R&D for Minority Business InnovatorsAre you looking for a way to fund your company’s re-search and development (R&D) initiatives? Do you seek to develop technology but don’t know how to begin? This session will explore how MBEs have limitless potential to innovate and bring scientific discoveries to the market-place by utilizing federal funded R&D. In 2015, the Federal Government requested over $135 billion to support inno-vative research, commercialization, tech entrepreneurship, and the administration’s research priorities. This session will also connect MBEs to current federal technology transfer programs, vast networks of technical resources, cutting-edge intellectual property, advance technologies, Federal SBIR programs, innovation capital providers, and MBEs that have successfully worked with federal, state-of-the-art testing facilities and world class scientists located throughout our national laboratories. The session will elevate educate and engage the audience with innovators in technology transfer from across the country.

Breakout Topic 5: Global Manufacturing: Exporting as a Ticket to SuccessThese days, the world is much smaller. Not only are companies competing within their industry at home, but also with businesses around the world. America’s manufacturing institutions account for a large portion of the global manufactur-ing community and staying competitive in these markets can be a challenge for any business. To help MBE manufactur-ing companies find success in global markets, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Minority Business Develop-ment Agency is focusing on different initiatives to connect minority businesses with large private sector partners and their overseas operations. Come hear about the Power Africa, Look South, Hanover Masse, and other programs, initiatives, and events that can help you jumpstart or expand your exporting strategy. Led by Joan Hill, Chief of Business Develop-ment for MBDA, this session will give you information, tips, and pointers on what programs are available, where to go, and who to talk to for exporting success.

Breakout Topic 3: Secure Your Data, Secure Your Company: Cybersecurity in ManufacturingWhile the rise of cloud data storage has proven to be a boom among consumers and businesses, a host of cyber security challenges has also emerged for manufacturers. With breaches, hacks and invasions, no matter the indus-try, the threat of cyberattacks are all too familiar.

Hear cybersecurity experts from Golden Technology Services highlight the growing cyber threat landscape for manufacturers; the history and future vulnerabilities; and what small and large organizations should do to minimize their risks when they are breached.

In an era of increasingly “smart “manufacturing and an in-terconnected world, this is a topic you don’t want to miss. To learn more about steps you can take to protect your company, attend this session led by Carl Hill, President and Chief Executive Officer of Golden Technology Ser-vices. In addition to providing manufacturers with insights into their potential data risks, Hill will also discuss:

• What Do Cyber Criminals Know That Most Manufacturers Don’t?

• Cyber Threats in Manufacturing - Why it is More Than an IT Problem?

• You and Your Supply Chain - What Should You Do Now?

• What Should I Know About My Personal Electronic Foot-print?

• What Your Family and Friends Should Know About Cyber Threats?

Breakout Topic 4:

Accessing Universities to Solve Manufacturing Challenges: The Georgia Tech Capstone ProgramThe Georgia Tech College of Engineering is one of the most prestigious schools in the country, ranking 5th in the 2016 America’s Best Colleges Edition of U.S. News and World Report. It’s no surprise then that its students are just as elite as their school’s reputation, which is why the National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2016 will feature the Capstone Design Course – a program that connects companies with the talent that lives at Georgia Tech to help solve manufacturing challenges.

Every semester, undergraduate students participate in the Capstone Design Expo where they research design challenges offered by company sponsors who want to find real-world engineering solutions. Past projects have included everything from designs for a corrective spinal deformity medical device, to VTOL UAVs that fly in emer-gency supplies for hard-to-reach disaster areas.

Not only is this an excellent opportunity for companies to receive low cost R&D, but it is also a chance for them to interact and work with Georgia Tech students first-hand to identify workforce talent for their manufacturing opera-tions. Representatives from the Capstone Design Course will discuss the opportunities and benefits of becoming a sponsor to these student teams.

Finding the best credit option for your businessAbout one in three business owners use their own funds or personal credit for their business, according to a recent Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index survey. Yet as a business seeks to grow, obtaining business credit is essential and can help finance purchases, build a credit history, supplement cash flow, and preserve savings.

So how do you choose the best credit option for your business? The type of business credit you need depends on your business goals and how much funding you need.Following are several common credit needs, and options available to address each one:

Need a way to pay for everyday business expenses? When looking for a convenient way to pay for everyday business expenses and a smart alternative to cash, checks, and personal credit cards, business credit cards can be a good option. With a business credit card, you can separate your business from personal expenses and immediately pay for day to day business expenses.

Need to make large seasonal purchases or cover payroll? Nearly every small business will face a time when it needs more cash than it has on hand. A business line of credit can provide fast, easy access to cash (which can bridge gaps in cash flow) and help supplement cash flow for business expansion, taxes, insurance, or other expenses.

Want to expand your business or make a large equipment or vehicle purchase? For a specific business need, business term or equipment loans should be considered. Loans give businesses immediate access to funds and are ideal for business owners who want a flexible way to get a lump sum at a fixed or variable interest rate for a fixed period of time. There are many types of loans, including unsecured loans, secured equipment loans, real estate loans, and vehicle loans, and rates and terms vary.

When evaluating lending options, you should also consider an SBA loan. Through government-guaranteed SBA loans, financial institutions are able to extend financing to a segment of creditworthy small business owners who may not be able to obtain a conventional loan or loan terms that meet their business needs.

Business owners who are looking to buy real estate, acquire a new business, or purchase equipment may find that an SBA loan offers more flexible terms than a conventional loan. SBA products include the SBA Express line of credit, and SBA 7(a) and SBA 504 loans.

As business owners consider their credit options, they should consult with a banker to help determine the best option to meet the specific needs of their business.

* Wells Fargo is America’s #1 lender (Community Reinvestment Act government data, 2002 – 2014). * Wells Fargo is America’s #1 SBA 7(a) lender by both units and dollars (U.S. Small Business

Administration data, federal fiscal year 2015).

All credit decisions subject to credit approval. For SBA loan products, SBA eligibility is also required.
