ANGELTO~ NEWS

By Kay Hironaka

One of the most beautiful weddings this writer ever attended was that of Mr. & Mrs. Douglas Furuye, a formal evening ceremon,y on August 2, at the Knox PresbYterian Church, followed by a swinging, happy

reception at the Hacienda International Hotel. It was truly a memorable event and among the man,y guests, were a few members of our chapter as well as those of the 442nd Veterans Association. Chick and Matsu were almost as radiant as the handsome bride and groom.

Joe Hironaka' s trip to Hawaii on behalf of the 1970 Nisei Veterans Reunion was all fouled up thanks to the short-lived Pan-Am strike, but Mr. Ted Kojima. came to the rescue and somehow or other Joe managed to board a jet finally on August 12, 1969. Harry Katahara, president of the Honolulu Chapter of B Compan,y was all ready to meet Joe at the airport on the 9th of August as originally planned, but somehow in all the confusion of last minute changes in schedule and what not, this end did not contact Harry in time and as we learned l.a ter, the dinner was not a total loss inasmuch as the honeymooners, Mr. & Mrs. Douglas Furuye were on hand. Without a doubt, this was one of the most incredible trips in that everything went awry, yet somehow things had a way of turning out beautifully. You have only to ask Harry Katahara, Roy Nakayama, Skinn,y Hagiwara, Tarush Yamamoto, Sus Nakagawa, Roger Kawasaki, larry Hirokawa and their respective wives. These are the friends that deserve the Hironakas' thanks for their now familiar hospitality and good company. Attendance was very good at the meeting

scheduled in Honolulu and Hilo and many pertinent questions were aske regarding the reunion. It is hoped that the interest and enthusiasm shown do not lag between now and next July.

Skinn,y Hagiwara was on hand to meet Joe at the Hilo airport and was more or less chauffeur and tour guide during the three days on the "Orchid Isle." In spite of the very heavy rain (dew, mist or whatever) our spirits were not dampened. Oops, sorry! We managed to see some sights that we somehow missed back in 1967, but of course the important thing was getting together with old as well as new friends. At ·the risk of sounding repetitious, gratitude and appreciation go out to each and every one of the guys and gals who turned out to spend some time with not only the Hironakas but an,y visitor or visitors from the mainland.

Winston Ota, Jack's own prodigy, who as a novice swimmer used to personally keep a weather eye on the general health and well

being of the crack Hilo Acquatic Club Medley Relay Team so he wouldn't have to

sub for any ailing member in the pinch

~~ finally licked the jitters and in a

. rea~nt Hawaii State AAU Long Course Championship meet for Age groups at Kaneoh~,

walked off with three blue ribbon events. That's going some for one who used to under-rate

himself . Father Jack hopes Winston's newly acquired poise and confidence in himself will now be reflected in the schoolroom.

Spealdng of swinuners, Skinny Hagiwara 1 s son Neal came home with trophy for a fourth place finish in the 13-14 200 meters butterfly

vent in the Far Western Age Group Championship at Los Altos, alifornia. And Hayato Tanaka ' s boy Rodney shattered Murray Rose's ecord in utility swinuning in the 14th Council International Sports . li tary Naval Pentathlon held at Rio de Janeiro and als 0 set a ecord in the life swimming race but was disqualified by the committee

days later on technical grounds.

George Inouye's girl Colleen, fresh out of law secretarial school got married to Brian Iwata of Los Angeles here in Hilo re«ently. At the re«eption Congressman Dan Inouye, a would-be music man, was in rare voice in his vocal rendition of KAIMANA HILA.

George doesn't know this but we recall seeing him lying vfOunded on a stretcher in a farmhouse in Colli while in another part of that converted aid station a Cannon Co. man was telling the medics, "these guys shouldn it feel b ad 0 They'll be going back to the States, raise a family and I hope they tell their kids what their old man went through this day out there. Me, I still have to play my percentage of staying alive."

Weill have to ask Colleen if George did make that lecture. There was another George there, too - George Taketa, himself hit in the 88 barrage. He came home to raise a family, too. (Continued on age 7)

OUr deepest sympathy and condolences to Robert "Bob" Aoki and family on the re<rent loss of t heir beloved son.

We "lish a speedy recovery to Bernard Akamine and Johrmy Kihara who are both confined in the Queens Medical Center.

Jetting in by Pan Am for a 2 hour lay ove on their '<ray t o Japan were Nonte Fujita and

family. On hand to g reet them Viere Harry Katahara, Sa Tanigawa and Jinuny lnafuku. We were surprised to s ee his lovely wife, s on and mother with him. His letter 'implied he w as going to Japan al one, \\hic vlOuldn't have surprised us. Mont e and family returned f rom Japan on July 4, a day ahead of schedule . It seems that they ran into the Lion's nLernational Convention in Tokyo and hotels were filled to the maximum or so he says. We think the competi tion was too great.

On July 5t h, Sa Tanigawa and "life, Roy Nakayama and wife , Yasu Takata, Riki Tsuda, Harry Katahara and Jinuny lnafuku enjoyed dirmer with the r-fonte Fujitas at the Willows. After d inner the gang congregated at Sa Tanigawa's home in Palolo for a snack and of course, bull session . Postman HaJime Yamane joined the gang after work. The session lasted t ill midnight with Monte doing most o.f the yakking. He sure knows some tall tales. We "lOuld like to apologize to }1onte for t·he sma 1 turn out . Host of the boys were selling saimin at the 50th SLate Fair or exhausted after- .. fOrking at t he fair .

Speaking of the Fair , the chief hancho Bob Takashige hinted that the chaptdr "Till realize a profit of approximately ;~2000 . 00. It certainly was v.orthvlhile "Iorking so hard. There vlere so many chiefs, Super Chiefs, etc . We wondered what was t he official title of the Big Chief. I guess we' ll find out next year.

The Yozo Yamamotos are "ralking on air t hese days . Son Myles, one of the outstanding high school ball players, was selected as one of the players to represent Hawaii in a series of games in Japan this summer. Hyles was selected to t he OlA All s taf Team the past two years

and with another year of eligibility, he is a cinch to make it 3 in a row. He batted over .400 for 2 years and was the only high school player to hit a grand slam homer t his past season. Congratulations, Myles. On the disstaff side, daughter Sandra, not to be outdone, received her fifth year Teaching Certificate and will be teaching in the near future. We think she should start by teaching Daddy grammar. Particularly, the proper use of words, such as lIungawa ll , " whepper",etc.

Speaking of proud parents, the Hajime Yamanes have three good reasons to be proud. Son Calvin is serving in Korea and Roger at Ft. Hood, Texas. Calvin served 18 months of service in Vietnam and Roger a year. The best news of all is that both of them \,lill be discharged by the end of this year and plan to attend college. On the feminine side, daughter Kathleen is attending the University of Wisconsin in La Crosse, familiar hunting grounds of many Club 100 members.

It was most enlightening to see approximately 200 members, guests, children and teenagers enjoying a day of relaxation at B Chapter's annual picnic at Kazuo Yamane1s Ewa beach horne. Needless to say, the food was enticing. Chef Roy Nakatani1s specialty, Kalua pig. Speaking of food, chowhound Roy Nakayama was seen filling his medium sized plate to the maximum. Observed Jimmy Oshiro using a ladle instead of the traditional hashi - I guess it enhances the rate of consumption but how much can you consume, Jimrny1

An interesting sight was Joe Muramatsu and Ken Kaneko walking side by side in their swimsuits - posing a striking resemblance to Pat Walker1s before and after advertisement. Ken has kept trim by running up and down the football field blowing a whistle. Better give up Primo, Joe.

Kudos to Picnic Chairman Riki Tsuda and his hard working committee.

Ted Teshima is attending the summer session at Punahou. Ted is the son of Takeshi Teshima, B Chapter member, who is in the import-eXlport bus!.. ness in Japan.

CLUB 100 24th ANNUAL MEMORIAL SERVICE

Each year on the Sunday preceding the 29th of September, members of Club 100 pay traditional homage to our fallen comrades buried here in Hawaii. The members' annual pilgrimage to the National Memorial II Cemetery and to other far-a-way cemeteries where our members are buried is not in vain. This tribute shows our respect for our fallen comrades.

The members who have died in combat, in a way, are fortunate as they do not have to cope with the drastic social economic changes in Hawaii. Were they to be rei ncarnated today, their exposure to these changes can be a traumati c experience for them. It would be very difficult for them to readily comprehend the militant students, the Vietnam War and the urban crisis . Especially the militant student, when education has always been uppermost in our minds.

We must always bear in our minds that our fallen members have not died for their country in vain. That their personal sacrifices must fortify our conscience in passing judgment over the militant students, the Vietnam War and t he urban crisis; and, that t his judgment over these social inequities must be tampered with tolerance and compassion. This is our obligation to them.

HAWAII CHAPTER NEWS (Continued from page 3) The sons of the 100th now make the news in the PPP. Like the

guy in the song, the one-time WWII headliner "don't get around IIDlch anymore."

Here's where I put in my version of a standard joke the M.C.'s tell at wedding parties around Hilo.

This couple celebrating their first wedding anniversary asks the Iband leader to play an appropriate number. The band obliges with "ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT."

Same couple, sarre band on the tenth anniversary . The song, this . time, "ONCE IN A WHIlE."

Comes the 25th Silver Anniversary. Comes the request. One mini skirt asks her escort, "Is this for real? They're playing "SILENT NIGHT'! and in the month of July, yet . Let's get t he heck out of ~ere . "

Apparently, the Nisei Veterans Reunion for 1970, which will be in the city ot Angels, has caused quite a bit of furor among the membership. And the cause of this conflict is the tentative tour to Expo '70 in Osaka which has been a gem of an idea in one of the member's mind when he approached a friend of Club 100 who is in the Airline/tourist industry.

It is pretty obvious that the entire membership of Club 100 is not going to the Nisei Veterans Reunion in Los Angeles . And also it is possibly true that some of the members who are not going to the reunion might want to go to Expo 170 because of the package deal offered by this friend in the airline/tourist industry . But our friend has withdrawn his offer because one of the stipulations in his package deal offer was t he use of the name "Club 100", and he was concerned in creating factional groups within Club 100 because of the concurrent time-table between the Nisei Veterans Reunion and Expo '70.

The important issue here is the benefit which the membership can enjoy should some of the members decide to go to Expo '70 . An ambivalent approach b,y the Board of Directors is not enough. The use of Club loor~ name in the tour to Expo '70 which will be comprised of Club 100 members (25 members at least) has been resolved earlier. Club 100 must not restrict our friend in the airline/tourist industry in soliciting club memb~rs to attend Expo '70, and the use of Club 100' s name for this tour group. Why make this issue a "red herring".

CHARLIE CHAPTER NEWS

By Don Kuwaye

The annual trek to a secluded home on the windward side of the island, an event much awaited by the sons of the members, 1,laS held on Saturday, August 23 , 1969. The father s and sons started arriving at the seaside home at 2:00 p .m.

Mike Tokunaga, the committee chainnan, was the earliest and had the Chapter sign near t he road

that none of the d.rivers could miss the place . His conunittee members started arriving one by one ~dth their pre-arranged market goodies and other picnic staples. Ronald Higashi took care of the deliciou3 sirloin steaks, enough for the 29 individuals who had signed up for t he father and son get-together.

Dinner \-las served at 5:30 vdth each one selecting his favorite style - rare, medium rare, or ~lell done. Even the smallest of the s ons got the same size steaks and enjoyed every tast:'l morsel. There Vias more than enough food for everyone. The salad , raw and fried fish, and the tasty Portuguese bread complimented the s teak dinner.

The fishermen araong us then went toward the sed. to try their l uck at catching some fish and squid. Defore an hour had elapsed, t here vlere three squid caucht and barbe4ued for t he enjoyment of the beer rinkers.

There wa!.) a group near Tom Matsumur' 's tent llaving t hei r beer and pupu and regaling each other ,·Ii th war-time events a J. the s oon to be concluded bowling season. Bachelor Kaoru Matsumura \lIas there t~jing to explain \vhy he vl-asn' table to help out the North American Life

mllers this ;year. He said he had to work the night shift. Someone r eminded him that his team-mates vTill need him in 1970 so please go

n the day shift.

The sons were s till out fi sh;ing or enjoying the water when some of fathers went in the house to play a fe~l hands. The luckiest one

r perhaps the best player of the night turned out t o be Kazuto Shimizu. n spite of being tired after a round of Golf vlith JDm.W Oshiro, . deshi Niimi, Joe Tengan and Naoto l·fatsumura at the Kahuku Links, azuto still managed to be alert and lucky enough to catch fu11-ouses and t he lowest lows.

CHARLIE CHAPTER NEWS (Continued from page 11)

Most of the youngsters were asleep by midnight, but several of \ the men were s till up and discussing politics, baseball and

reminiscing about those days -- Italy a nd France. '

Masa Nakano vias the earliest to awake and volunteered to cook the bacon and eggs. He did a good job. There vias a fellow who finished off his breakfast with a nice size steak. Someone said he is still a big eater. His name shall not be revealed in order to protect the

innocence in his family.

The sons enjoyed the get-together and said they are looking forward to next year's event. Thanks go to Mike Tokunaga and his committee for a job well done.

Through Ronald Higashi's leadership, a bonsai class has b~gun among the chapter members. The class meets each week on Thursday night for a 2-hour session. Higashi's selling point in having the members attend the class: develop a hobby now before you retire so you'll be kept bu~. He sure is a hustler in whatever he does. Interest is very high and the following are attending: Mr. & Mrs. Yoroku Ito, Mr. & Mrs. Sumio Ito, Mr. & Mrs. Takeshi Kimura, Mr. & Mrs Ronald Higashi, Mr. & Mrs. Hideshi Niimi, Mr. & l-u-s. Masayoshi Kawamoto, Douglas Higa, William Komoda, Allan Shimizu and Warren Iwai.

The bowling season concluded with an awards night at the Chuckwagon on Kapiolani Blvd. Last year's champs, North American Life Insurance, sponsored by Greg Ikeda, played like the Cardinals and the Tigers this year. The members were "off" considerably this year, and also lost a few close games. Masa Nakano will captain the team in 1970 and the team members have assured him they'll try harder.

Congratula tions go to Richard Yamamoto of Windward Furniture who garnered the high average trophy fo~ B Division bowlers with a 165.

Kazuto, the regular chapter correspondent, requested that some of the chapter members volunteer to write for him because he is being kep busy at his Pearl Harbor job. I think it would be a good idea for

others to write a1:D ut their observatiorn a nd the chapter events for a Change. Let Kazuto rest for a month or more. It is extremely difficult to write if the rrembers don't tell him what's going on in the chapter. So all of us, look around, listen and observe for any news vlhich vTO uld be of interest to the others.

ABLE CHAPTER NEWS

By Blue Nagasaki

Our Able Chapter president Biffa Moriguchi, who wouldn't miss anything free, was invited to the bowling banquet on September 12 at the Chuckwagon since Kanraku Teahouse (A) took the 1969 Club 100 Bowling League Championship, but vlasn' table to make it. There must have been a special

reason why he didn't show his face. Why? His son, Steve, who graduated with honors at our local st . Louis College, left Hawaii that night to attend Washington University in St. Louis on a scholarship to be a doctor.

It seems many members who weren't able to make some kind of donation will have the chance to help push over the next money-making projeet which Hideo Murata and his group will make a personal appearance at Nippon Theatre on the follm·Ting days of October - S, 9, 10, 11 and 12, through the courtesy of the Furuya Brothers and will be

nder the sponsorship of Club 100. Please help by selling your share f the exchange tickets . There vTill be one show per night on Wednesday hursday and Friday, but on Saturday night - t1l10 shows. Also on unday, the final show will be a matinee and he (Murata) will return to

Japan the same afternoon .

BOWLING (Continued from page 14) The most improved bowler trophy went to Geni Masumotoya (Bn. HQ)

who from 132 jumped to 139 - net gain of 7 pins.
