Overview

Nearly two hundred guests gathered at Barclays’s impressive Event Suite at their headquarters in London's

Canary Wharf on 2nd May this year, to attend the National Mentoring Consortium's 12th annual Award Ceremony. The event was a great success with key speeches by leading representatives from business, law, media, and academia.

Andrew Eddy, the London Office Director of Shell International, spoke of their continuing commitment to the mentoring schemes and looked forward to working more closely with the National Mentoring Consortium (NMC) in the coming years. Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Channel 4's leading newsreader and journalist, engaged the audience with accounts of his own career progression and the importance of mentoring in his experience. He delivered an important message in his speech when he urged the students to set their sights high and never aim too low.

This was echoed by Sir John Wall CBE, retired Deputy High Court Master and the first blind person to be appointed to such a position. Sir John holds the mentoring process in high regard and he noted that people with disabilities can still achieve, regardless of having to battle against other peoples' prejudices and preconceptions.

THE NATIONAL MENTORING CONSORTIUMis a nationally recognised leader in mentoring support encouraging the recruitment of talent from under-represented populations in the U.K.

Our Mentoring Schemes

Ethnic Minority Undergraduate Scheme

This successful scheme provides support and experience to Black and Asian students, and promotes equality and diversity in graduate recruitment. The scheme links students with motivated professionals in order to give them support, experience, and help in preparing for entry to the world of work.

Disability Undergraduate SchemeOur mentoring scheme enables students with a disability or dyslexia to develop their talents and abilities as well as grow in confidence. In addition the scheme enables mentors to develop their skills, and employers to become more disability aware with both staff and clients needs.

Professional Mentoring ProgrammeThis is a new project designed to provide non-judgemental and professional support to people in full time employment, who are aiming to reach senior management positions.

There were speeches from past and present mentees who spoke enthusiastically of how participating on the schemes had increased their confidence and development of their professional and personal abilities and strengths

Dr. Aggrey Burke is a senior lecturer and consultant psychiatrist at St Georges Hospital. His assertion that people should not define themselves in terms of other peoples' categorisations continued one of the most important themes of the day.

There were speeches from past and present mentees who spoke enthusiastically of how participating on the schemes had increased their confidence and development of their professional and personal abilities and strengths. One of the many success stories came from Mariam Siddiqui, a former UEL student and mentee who is now a manager at Network Rail. All the former mentees said they would whole-heartedly recommend the scheme to other motivated students who are willing to make the most of the opportunities and challenges the schemes present.

This was echoed by the mentors who spoke of the personal satisfaction of seeing the potential in someone and working with them to recognise that they already have the ability to become and to achieve whatever it is that they want to do. In addition mentors and their companies saw participation on the schemes as a valuable contribution to their staff development and training, and enriching them as organisations.

This was firstly and fore mostly a day of celebration, and entertainment was provided in an innovative and enjoyable rap form by Alan Charles. This was followed by a break providing an opportunity for old friends and new acquaintances to network, and chat about the NMC schemes and experiences while enjoying the excellent buffet lunch and refreshments provided by Barclays.
