Dear Friends,
For more than 65 years, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame has chronicled and
promoted thoroughbred racing and recognized its greatest achievers with the sport’s most
prestigious honor, election into the Hall of Fame. It is a mission we remain committed to as we
look forward to a bright future for racing and our beloved Museum.
The Museum has offered several exciting and educational exhibits in recent years, including The
Sanford Legacy, Treasures of the Vault, the Alfred Z. Solomon Saratoga Sesquicentennial, A
Sporting Summer, The Travers and Man o’ War at 100, which opened in March of 2017 and runs
through 2018.
Several other initiatives are also creating a lot of excitement at the Museum. They include a
newly renovated space in the courtyard to be named in honor of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney,
one of the Museum’s founders and its first president. The redesigned space will feature
commemorative bricks available for people to purchase and leave a permanent legacy at the
Museum.
Letter from
Gretchen Jackson,
Museum President
Also, in another beautification effort, the Museum will be creating this summer the addition of
Lawn Jockeys along Union Avenue. They will make a most colorful display of some of the most
well-known racing stables.
Recognizing the most prominent participants in racing is at the core of our mission. In 2016, we
welcomed a remarkable Hall of Fame class that included Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Ramon
Dominguez and Steve Asmussen, among others. The 2017 class features three of the most
spectacular jockeys of the modern era, Javier Castellano, Victor Espinoza and Garrett Gomez, as
well as the incredible Goldikova. The 2017 Hall of Fame inductions will also feature the
enshrinement of steeplechase legends Tom Voss and Good Night Shirt. The Museum reviews
steeplechase candidates once every four years. The Hall of Fame ceremony continues to be
among the most meaningful days in the sport and garners national attention for our Museum and
mission.
We continue to offer outstanding public programming and events for our loyal membership,
including handicapping seminars, guest speakers, tours of Saratoga Race Course’s training track,
events celebrating the Triple Crown series and the Breeders’ Cup and several education
initiatives.
As we look toward the future, we are dedicated to continuing to enhance and expand our
multimedia efforts, including our website and social media outreach. We are also working on a
new campaign to advance our educational offerings and facilities for those initiatives.
The Museum has been a vital component of the Saratoga Springs community since its founding
in 1950 and has served a crucial role in racing through its mission of chronicling and promoting
the sport. We thank you — our members, our community, racing enthusiasts and Board of
Trustees — for the dedication and support you provide that help us develop our visions into
success stories for all to enjoy.
