Slovak Club Celebrated 100th AnniversaryOn July 27th, 2013 the John Kollar Slovak Literary and Library Society celebrated

its 100th anniversary. The Kollar Club, as it is better known, invited former, present, and hopefully future members to partake in the celebration. The festivities openedwith a blessing followed by traditional Slovakian food, music, door prizes and raffles. The John Kollar Slovak Literary and Library Society was founded 100 years ago in

"The Hollow" of Pittsburgh's South Side. The organization came into being during thegreat wave of immigration during the age of industrialization. Members worked in thecoal mines, glass factories, and steel mills in the area. The Slovak migrants from thevillages of Niedzica and Frydman migrated to Pittsburgh's South Side. The immi-grants wanted and needed to form a club where they could go to socialize amongtheir own ethnic group and have some activities like singing and dancing. They decided on the name of John Kollar, who was a great Slovak literati and poet and itwas a place where many immigrants went to learn to read, write, and speak English.Today we have classes to learn Slovak and to learn Slovakian culture. The club was

also a place where one could learn of events taking place at home in the old countrysince there were no telephones or internet. Today the Kollar Club still supports theircreed "to cultivate raising moral standards and education among Slovak youths andAmericans of Slovak descent".

National Slovak Society News from the Home Office

From The President’s Desk…

David G. Blazek, FICNational President

Good morning from the desk of thePresident. As I write this article in earlyJuly, the rain is pelting down here atthe Home Office. It seems like we havebeen having spring like weather withall the rain this June and July. Wehaven’t had to do much watering of thegrass to keep it green this summer,Mother Nature is doing a great job ofthat. It won’t be long until the childrenwill be heading back to school; time isflying by faster and faster. This month we will be holding our

Executive Committee Board meetingon the 8th. Region and Assembly activ-ities include the Region 5 Picnic onAugust 17th, P09A picnic on August4th, Assembly 0731, Youth Day Scavenger Hunt on August 29th andAssembly 0160 Lake Erie CrushersBaseball game and picnic on the 16thof August. I hope everyone enjoys therest of the summer.

It’s What You ScatterI was at the corner grocery store

buying some early potatoes...I noticeda small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily appraising a basket of freshly pickedgreen peas. I paid for my potatoes butwas also drawn to the display of freshgreen peas. I am a pushover for creamedpeas and new potatoes. Pondering the

peas, I couldn’t help overhearing theconversation between Mr. Miller (thestore owner) and the ragged boy next to me. “Hello Barry, how are you today?”“Hello, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank you. Justadmiring your peas, they sure lookgood.” “They are good Barry. How’syour Mom?” “Fine, getting stronger allthe time.” “Good, anything I can helpyou with?” “No Sir, just admiring thepeas.” “Would you like to take somehome?” asked Mr. Miller. “No sir. Gotnothing to pay for them with.” “Well, what have you to trade me for some ofthose peas?” “All I got is my prize mar-ble here.” “Is that right? Let me see it,said Miller. “Here it is. She’s a dandy!”“I can see that Hmmm, only thing isthis one is blue and I sort of go for red.Do you have a red one like this at home”,the store owner asked? “Not exactly

sack of peas home with you and nexttrip here let me look at that red mar-ble” Mr. Miller told the boy. “Sure will,Thanks Mr. Miller.” Mrs. Miller, who had been standing

nearby, came over to help me. With asmile she said, “there are two otherboys like him in our community, allthree are in very poor circumstances.Jim just loves to bargain with them forpeas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their redmarbles, and they always do, he de-cides he doesn’t like red after all andhe sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their

next trip to the store.” I left the storesmiling to myself, impressed with thisman. A short time later I moved to Colorado, but I never forgot the story ofthis man, the boys, and their barteringfor marbles. Several years went by,each more rapid than the previous one.Just recently I had occasion to visitsome old friends in that Idaho commu-nity and while I was there I learnedthat Mr. Miller had died. They werehaving his visitation that evening andknowing my friends wanted to go, Iagreed to accompany them. Upon arrivalat the mortuary we fell into line tomeet the relatives of the deceased andto offer whatever words of comfort wecould. Ahead of us in line were threeyoung men. One was in an army uniformand the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...all veryprofessional looking. They approachedMrs. Miller, standing composed andsmiling by her husband’s casket. Eachof the young men hugged her, kissedher on the cheek, spoke briefly with herand moved on to the casket. Her mistylight blue eyes followed them as, one byone; each young man stopped briefly andplaced his own warm hand over the coldpale hand in the casket. Each left themortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes. Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I

told her who I was and reminded her ofthe story from those many years agoand what she had told me about herhusband’s bartering for marbles. Withher eyes glistening, she took my hand(Continued on page 15)

The Second Opinionfrom the Vice-President

Dean Burns, FICNational Vice-President

AugustBecause “time marches on” and var-

ious other cliches, we have arrived atAugust. Wherever you are, it is proba-bly hot. That suits me because it iswell established that I hate the winter. But August can be a little much evenfor me. But the good news is that NSSAssemblies and Regions are havingmany activities which involve water andoutdoors. Your choices for things to doincrease as we reach the end of sum-mer. Everyone is trying to get in a fewmore fun things before it is too late. Too late in the sense that the

weather will not cooperate for ever.Another problem is that school will bestarting at the end of the month andthose little people will not be free tojoin you for activities that conflict withschool.Check the paper for activities in your

area and make the effort to get outthere with other NSS members or withmembers of your extended families toenjoy a little recreation or, you couldorganize your own activities and inviteothers.

SchoolYes, to the despair of the young and

the relief of their elders, school willstart once again before we know it. Ifyou are a parent, it is time to findclothing that fits and is appropriate foryour children to wear. There are lot ofother supplies that are needed to sup-plement what the school will provide. In my day, a pencil would suffice. Nowthey need binders and other things tobe ready. Much of these will be unusedand unnecessary. So do not buy everytrinket that they put out at the DollarStore. Wait and see what is reallyneeded before you buy.Encourage your children to make

the effort needed to get an education.Yes, it is easy to drift along and takethe middle of the road grades. Unfortu-nately, one day they will need to makea living one way or another. Freeloadingoff of parents may be easy, but parentsare not thrilled with that for very long.In modern times, people change oc-

cupations and/or goals several timesbefore settling into some life’s work.In fact, life’s work probably is no longerapplicable. It is more life work for thisperiod of my life. But that is fine. Mostof us were not born with finite goals towork towards. But we ought to havesomething vague to keep us headed inthe right direction.

“I will study and prepare myself, andsomeday my chance will come.” Abra-ham Lincoln. I guess that adviceworked out for Abe. It will for the restof us as well. Nothing will irritate youmore than getting to an opportunityand discovering that you are not readyto accept it. But, I am living proof thatAbe was right. If you are prepared, yourturn will come.Keep after those kids. They may not

like it now, but one day, they will ap-preciate all of the encouragement (andnagging). Besides, you will love the re-flected glory when your kids do well.(At least I always did.)

EducationIn another life, I taught school for

thirty years, so I know first hand thevalue of education. Most of my doctorsare former students. I remember thework ethic that each showed and Ithink that same work ethic just mightcome in handy for treating me. I haveseen many students become success-ful in a chosen field. On the otherhand, I have seen others who let theopportunity get away. I also know thatno adult can make a kid understandhow important it is to do your best atanything and everything. It is some-thing that one needs to discover foroneself. When I worked on the railroad, we

had a slogan that said, “Each one, reach one.” I have seen it other placesas well. The point is that if each of uscan inspire one other, mankind will bebetter. (If you can reach one, you prob-ably can reach two, etc.) I know also, that not all education comes fromschool. There are infinite lessons to belearned just by living.

NSS Convention in2014

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! The NSS36th Quadrennial Convention will be heldJune 22-25, 2014 at The Hershey Lodgein Hershey, PA. More information tocome as time draws near.

Birthday WishesThe older I get the less I want to

remember, or be reminded of, birth-days but these are two very importantbirthdays to announce. Best BirthdayWishes go to President David Blazekwho celebrates on August 3rd and tomy son Ryan who celebrates on August1st. God Bless you both and may youenjoy a fantastic day!

ChangesAs the old saying goes, “nothing

ever stays the same” and that is true at NSS. We have realigned our staff, improved the administration of our information, redesigned our corporatewebsite and implemented secured access to Board reports. Other changesare on the way but I will wait until nextmonth (it will give me something towrite about!).Let me begin with our staff. As we

are a “finely tuned machine” when itcomes to the number of staff vs thebusiness we process on a daily basis, it is very important that we crosstrainso that when one person is out for anylength of time, someone else can stepin. We, as President Blazek puts it,“changed seats on the bus” and moved staff between the New Business,Fraternal and Underwriting departments. We have also added temporary inhousesupport to our Claims and Premium

areas as with business growth comesincreased workloads. We also have a new addition to our

staff to support our Underwriting Department. Richard Toth comes to uswith 28 years of experience in the Fraternal world and expertise in manyareas of the business. We are very excited that Rick has joined the NSS.Welcome Aboard Rick! The administration of our business

data requires focus on accuracy, secu-rity and the ability to provide informa-tion as quickly and efficiently aspossible. We’ve implemented severalnew processes so we ask that ouragents and members be patient as response times may be slightly longerthan in the past.We are also in the process of re-

designing our Web site to provide easiernavigation to important information. The focus of the new design is to improve the quality, quantity and searchtime of the information requested.Keep checking my article for news ofwhen the new site is available. An finally we move into the future

with current technology. The Board willnow access their board informationthrough a “Boardbooks” App on theirIPADS and have it available on land, sea or air!! The security of the IPADalong with the security and encryptionof data of the Boardbooks App ensuresthe safety of corporate information.

16 Things to Remember1. Accept the fact that some daysyou’re the pigeon - and some daysyou’re the statue!

2. Always keep your words soft andsweet - just in case you have to eatthem.

3. Always read stuff that will make youlook good if you die in the middle of it.

4. Drive carefully - it’s not just carsthat can be recalled by their Maker.

5. If you can’t be kind, at least havethe decency to be vague.

6. If you lend someone $20 and neversee that person again, it was probablyworth it.

7. Never put both feet in your mouthat the same time, because then youwon’t have a leg to stand on.

8. Nobody cares if you can’t dancewell. Just get up and dance.

9. Since it’s the early worm that getseaten by the bird, sleep late.

10. The second mouse gets thecheese.

11. When everything’s coming yourway, you’re in the wrong lane.

12. Birthdays are good for you. Themore you have, the longer you live.

13. You may be only one person in theworld, but you may also be the world toone person.

14. Some mistakes are too much funto make only once.

15. We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty andsome are dull. Some have weird namesand all are different colors - but theyall have to live in the same box.

16. A truly happy person is one whocan enjoy the scenery on a detour.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Stefka family on the loss of their mother,Kathryn Stefka who passed away on July 11th. Kay was the wife of former President Joseph Stefka, Sr.

Thought for the Month

What lies behind us and whatlies before us are tiny matters whencompared to what lies within us.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Let’s talk about the1% solution toyour problemIf I said that 99% of your finan-

cial problems could be solved with1% would you believe me? Probablynot, since if it sounds too good to betrue – well you know the rest. But let’slook at an example and see if there issome validity to this statement. Now let’s suppose that you do what-

ever you want with 99% of your money– spend it or save it. The other 1% weare going to put into life insurance. Itmay be just whole life or term or acombination but this 1% is going tosolve problems. First of all any insurance proceeds

would be used to pay your debts in the event of your untimely demise. For example:A $50,000 income using the above

formula would allocate $49,500 for expenses and (1%) or $500 for insur-ance. At age 35; $500 would buy a$35,000 of whole life insurance with a$100,000 term rider. If premiums arepaid to age 65 the net result is$135,000 of life insurance coveragefor 30 years, at a cost of about$15,000. At age 65 the policy has acash value around $19,000. Now thinkabout this for a minute: 30 years ofprotection, $135,000 death benefit, and all your money back at the end ofthe period plus some more. At younger ages this works even

better and at older ages a little less. The permanent and term mix can beadjusted up or down to accommodateany budget. Plus after the first fewyears of any permanent plan of insur-ance there are cash or loan values thatmay be used in an emergency. Thereare other options too: such as paid-up

Edward Havir, Assembly 0004 Celebrates 90th Birthday

On January 8th 2013, Edward Havir celebrated his 90th birthday with family, neighbors, and the Westlake mayor, Dennis Clough, who was gathering signatureson a petition for another term as mayor of Westlake.Edward is a long time member and promoter of The National Slovak Society.

He was one of the first Activity Directors on the assembly level and signed up manymembers to N.S.S., who later became officers in the Assembly. Edward, and his wifeMildred, were involved in the Sunday Mixed Bowling League, which is still a part ofthe assembly activities.Edward served as a Director on the N.S.S. Board for at least 25 years. One of

his suggestions to get youth involved in N.S.S., was the May Art Contest which is oneof the activities the youth seem to enjoy, judging by the entries every year.Edward was President of Assembly 0004 for at least 25 years, and this year,

due to medical issues, he decided to resign his position. He continues to be involvedwith the assembly. The Officers and members of the assembly wish Edward, HappyBirthday and more of them.

Resting underneath werethree exquisitely shined red marbles. The Moral: We will not be rememberedby our words, but by our kind deeds.Life is not measured by the breaths wetake, but by the moments that take ourbreath. It’s not what you gather, butwhat you scatter that tells what kind oflife you have lived!

Assembly L-161 National ProjectThroughout the months of April and

May, Assembly L-161 partnered withthe Slovak Savings Bank and held afood and fundraising drive for the LittleSisters of the Poor on the Northside of Pittsburgh. Since 1872 thousandsfrom all walks of life, religions, and beliefs have been cared for at thehome on Benton Avenue. Members could drop off their dona-

tions at the bank. A wish list of itemsfrom the Little Sisters was posted. Itwasn’t long before donations of ketchup, vinegar, spaghetti sauce, salad dressingand other items filled the empty boxes. In addition to the food items, monetarydonations totaling $100.00 were alsocollected and matched with an addi-tional $100.00 by the Slovak SavingsBank. Many thanks to Dan Moon, CEO of the

Slovak Savings Bank, his staff, and themembers of L-161 for their generosity.

Assembly 4Assembly 0004 held their 9th Annual Miniature Golf Tournament on Sunday, June

23rd at Mr Divots on York Rd. It was on the warm side with the temperature around90 degrees, but 23 people finished the 18 holes and then enjoyed an ice cream conebefore heading to the lounge. Cold beverages were then appreciated along with vari-ous choices of food. A brief meeting led to the presentation of the trophy’s. TheMen’s Division was very close:

1st Alex Sir Louis – 45 2nd Rich Durcansky – 46 3rd Bob Sir Louis – 47 4th Ken Durcansky – 48 5th Dick Topola – 49 6th place was tied at 50 by: Sam Gullatta, Frank Szel, Tony Lacznar,

Bud Sir Louis, and Craig Bowman The women created a problem with Julie Gullatta winning 1st place with a 55, but

then 2nd place was tied with a 58 by: Barb Bartczak, Marilyn Genedick and SoniaVorell. With only one 2nd place trophy a decision had to be made as to who wouldget to take it home. Barb had to leave, so a playoff was not an option. An agreed de-cision was to put the (3) names in a box and the one drawn would be the winner. Theresult of which made Barb Bartczak the official 2nd Place Winner.Over all it was a great day and a great tournament with fun for all those attending,

and most commented upon leaving was that they were looking forward to next year’stournament.A special thanks again to Assembly 0004 member Craig Bowman who came all
