As Proud Partners of America’s National Parks since 2000,

American Airlines, Discovery Communications, Inc.,

Ford Motor Company, Kodak and TIME magazine have

committed more than $88 million to National Parks

nationwide. In addition to direct funding and in-kind

donations, these philanthropic companies have generously

provided media outreach and, perhaps most importantly,

their employees’ time and effort.

The impact has been immense. Our Proud Partners

have jump-started new programs, facilities, technologies,

research projects and a host of other vital initiatives at

229 National Parks and 14 National Park entities (see

the map on page 17 or the Appendix).

L o o k i n g t o t h e H o r i z o n

While impressive, the numbers don’t tell the whole story. By collaborat-

ing with NPS and NPF, our Proud Partners have carefully tailored their

support to mesh with their respective areas of expertise, enabling all of

us to work more productively and cost-effectively.

Moreover, our Proud Partners have advanced strategies and action

models in individual Parks that can easily be replicated in other units

throughout America. As a result, they’ve helped us identify new

solutions that will benefit our Parks for decades to come.

From promoting National Parks to enhancing in-Park experiences to

creating new educational opportunities, our Proud Partners are

inspiring people to visit National Parks more often. And that will

help the National Park System remain vital and relevant to every

American – both today and long into the future.

The company is building awareness for our National Parks via a

creative blend of innovative fundraising techniques and educational

outreach. In addition, American Airlines sponsors several high-profile

in-Park projects.

The centerpiece of American Airlines’ involvement is a valuable incen-

tive offered through its AAdvantage® Member Program: Customers

receive 10 bonus miles for every dollar they donate to NPF.

Not only has this fundraising strategy generated more than $2 million

for National Park programs nationwide, it has also increased public

awareness of the great experiences that our National Parks offer. To

date, more than 3,500 American Airlines’ customers have purchased

National Park Passes.

N e t Wo r k i n g

American Airlines eSummary and eNewsletter – distributed via e-mail

to nearly 5 million AAdvantage® members every month – periodically

highlight information on how to purchase a National Parks Pass and/

or become a steward. The company’s web site (www.AA.com) also

includes a page dedicated to these topics.

Featuring content developed in collaboration with NPS, these far-reaching

communications also enable potential visitors to learn what’s new in the

National Parks. In 2002, for example, the American Airlines’ web site

showcased an article about the most recent NPS addition: Cedar Creek

and Belle Grove National Historical Park, which commemorates a sig-

nificant Civil War landscape and antebellum plantation in Virginia’s

magnificent Shenandoah Valley.

American Airlines also features National Parks in American Way, the

company’s in-flight magazine that reaches 9 million travelers every

month. In 2002, National Parks were discussed in its “Vantage Point”

Sponsored by American Airlines, the Park Flight Program protects migratory

birds and their habitats in American and Mesoamerican National Parks.

Jointly organized by NPF, NPS, the University of Arizona and the

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Park Flight has funded seven

migratory bird conservation projects and related public education

projects in 13 National Parks. Beyond raising vital financial resources

($522,000), American Airlines has generously provided free air travel for

professional exchanges between American and Mesoamerican specialists.

Thanks in part to these efforts, Park Flight earned the highest possible

honor from NPS – the coveted Director’s Award – in March 2002.

A S o a r i n g S u c c e s s i n N e w M e x i c o

Reflecting the spirit and scope of the entire program, the New Mexico

Park Flight program conducted research on neo-tropical birds at Pecos

National Historical Park and Aztec Ruins, Bandelier, Capulin Volcano

and Fort Union National Monuments. As a result, these units can now

better protect numerous species. Moreover, 660 rural school children

participated in educational programs that helped them learn how

conservation initiatives improve the long-term health of National Parks.

T h e W r i g h t S t u f f

To mark the 100th anniversary of powered flight, American Airlines

donated $100,000 to the new First Flight Centennial Pavilion at the

Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk.

American Airlines’ contributions helped fund both the 20,000-square-foot

Pavilion structure and an educational exhibit called “Outer Banks at the

Turn of the Century.” Taking visitors back in time, this vibrant display

demonstrates how the Outer Banks area influenced the Wright Brothers

and their work. During the Pavilion’s two- to four-year existence, millions of

visitors will enjoy re-creations of the Wright Brothers’ early campsite and

the Kitty Hawk Life Saving Station, where the famous brothers worked with

local residents to conduct flight-related experiments.

America’s National Parks have many surprising and delightful stories to

tell, and Discovery Communications, Inc. is teaming up with NPS and

NPF to make sure these stories are heard, coast to coast.

With more than 950 million cumulative subscribers and 14 global tele-

vision brands – including the Discovery Channel and Travel Channel –

Discovery Communications helps bring the National Park experience to

a wider public around the world. In addition, the company also lends

its impressive talents to help individual Parks connect with visitors.

R e e l P r o g r e s s

Each year, Discovery works with NPS and NPF to produce visitor

education films – engaging films that encourage the American public

to travel to their National Parks. Recent additions include:

W h e n D i n o s a u r s R o a m e d A m e r i c a

Discovery has adapted its popular animated special, When Dinosaurs

Roamed America, to become a new visitor education film for dinosaur-

related National Parks. Hosted by Park Ranger Ingrid Nixon, the film

illuminates the history of dinosaurs and fossils in America. Thanks to

great special effects and captivating narration – and

Discovery’s generous grant – it’s now a big hit at 33 National Parks

(see Appendix).

When Dinosaurs Roamed America was a uniquely collaborative effort

in which the Discovery crew worked closely with NPF and NPS staff.

Greg McDonald, Paleontology Program Coordinator at NPS, reviewed

the script for accuracy and solicited input from Park paleontologists.

As the film was distributed, each participating Park received 300 out-

reach kits, which included a customizable press release, a “Cast of

Characters” (a brief description of each dinosaur featured in the film)

and an insightful interview with Don Waller, the film’s chief animator.

These kits enabled the Parks to more effectively reach their target

audiences, particularly schoolchildren.

A remote mountain valley, waterfalls, jagged peaks, fields of

wildflowers exploding with color. Santa Monica Mountains National

Recreation indeed preserves a slice of old California – and now visitors

will be able to learn more about this critical National Park through

Discovery’s new 20-minute visitor education film.

First shown in November 2003 to coincide with the Park’s 25th

anniversary, this high-definition film captures the beauty, cultural her-

itage and history of the Santa Monica Mountains.

While most people know that Washington, DC, is home to our nation’s

capital, many don’t know that it also offers some of the finest National

Park sites anywhere – 15 in all. Greater DC Parks: For the People,

a new Discovery film hosted by Gayle Hazelwood, Assistant

Superintendent for National Capital Parks East, will help motivate

people to enjoy a wider variety of experiences in the DC area – from

hiking Manassas National Battlefield in Virginia to learning about

Frederick Douglass at his historic home in the District. The film will be

shown beginning in the first quarter of 2004.

Although the four National Parks in South Florida collectively attract

over 2 million visitors every year, few people know about all four. A

new Discovery film – also ready in early 2004 – will help change this

situation by encouraging people to visit Everglades, Biscayne and Dry

Tortugas National Parks, as well as Big Cypress National Preserve.

Discovery and the Travel Channel have produced over a dozen on-air

films promoting the richness and diversity of our National Parks.

Developed in cooperation with each featured Park to ensure appropri-

In 2003 alone, Discovery donated $3.8 million worth of on-air pro-

gramming to help National Parks generate more public attention.

Throughout the year, Discovery airs special Public Service

Announcements that appeal to its vast television audience to support

National Parks. Developed in partnership with NPF and NPS, these

donated PSAs help raise awareness of National Parks and the need for

public support, and provide high-visibility media placement that we

would not otherwise be able to afford.

D i s c o v e r y C h a n n e l Yo u n g S c i e n t i s t

C h a l l e n g e

More than 6,000 middle-school students from across the country have

participated in the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge

(DCYSC) since its inception in 1999. Reflecting the philosophy that

experiential learning makes lasting impacts, the DCYSC encourages

young people to explore a wide range of scientific disciplines by trying

to solve real problems.

Working closely with NPS and other partners, the DCYSC brings 40

finalists to Washington, DC, every year to tackle hands-on scientific

challenges. NPS recognizes the student who best displays leadership,

cooperation and teamwork with the National Park Service Explorer

Award. In 2003, NPS bestowed this honor on Scott Presbrey of Ft.

Myers, FL, who will also receive a trip to Yosemite National Park to

work with NPS researchers on special projects.

As a Proud Partner, Ford Motor Company is working with NPS and

NPF to make it easier for visitors to experience our National Parks with-

out compromising their natural beauty.

Specifically, Ford is helping NPS advance innovative transportation

solutions that preserve resources while providing safe and enjoyable

access to National Parks. By leveraging its unique expertise in this

field, Ford is working to:

◆ Design and implement alternative transportation for National Parks

◆ Foster environmental leadership

◆ Use transportation as a tool to educate visitors

◆ Educate NPS personnel about integrated transportation strategies

Ford has provided extraordinary in-kind product donations and media

outreach, as well as millions of dollars for in-Park programs and

research grants that are creating positive change throughout our

National Parks.

T h e W h e e l s o f C h a n g e

Ford’s advanced technology initiatives and transportation-specific dona-

tions helped us discover models of alternative transportation that can

be replicated to improve numerous National Parks throughout America.

R e f u r b i s h i n g t h e R e d B u s e s

Ford spearheaded a dramatic restoration project that returned Glacier

National Park’s historic fleet of 33 Red Buses to active service in June

2002. In addition to beautifully preserving their exteriors, Ford made

the buses more Park- and visitor-friendly. In fact, they now run 93%

cleaner – thanks to an innovative, environmentally responsible bi-fuel

system for gasoline and propane. Inspired, Park staff created a special

exhibit that educates visitors about the project and the importance of

bringing our historic treasures back to life.

E l e c t r i f y i n g R e s u l t s

Ford also made history by completing a donation of over 600 electric

vehicles – the largest gift of alternatively fueled vehicles ever made! By

providing a zero-emission, ultra-clean transportation solution, this land-

mark initiative is already helping to protect and preserve natural

wonders in dozens of National Parks.

Next year the company will unveil its new Ford Escape Hybrid, a full-

hybrid system vehicle that meets strict SULEV emissions standards and

gets 400-500 miles per tank of gas. Ford will also donate many of

these vehicles to National Parks to help visitors learn more about how

this exciting technology can serve as a sustainable transportation

option for NPS.

S p o k e s P e o p l e

Bikes can play many roles within our National Parks, from encouraging

visitors to venture outside their cars to helping rangers react faster to

emergencies. With this versatility in mind, Ford donated numerous high-

quality K2 mountain bikes, which have been used for myriad purposes.

In Cuyahoga Valley National Park, for example, Ford-donated bikes

were part of the 2003 Junior Ranger program, while the C&O Canal

used the bikes to offer visitors a unique tour through Park sites.

E d u c a t i o n i n M o t i o n

Ford and NPF – in partnership with the Student Conservation

Association – have made it possible for at least 35 students per year to

participate in the Transportation Interpreters Program. Serving as inter-

preters aboard various in-Park vehicles, such as shuttles, buses and

ferries, these students teach visitors that using alternative transportation

is not only environmentally sound, but practical and enjoyable as well.

The program’s ultimate goal is three-fold: To help bright young people

learn more about National Parks (possibly kindling some future NPS

careers), to promote onsite programs and to encourage visitors to use

transportation other than their private vehicles while visiting National

Parks. This program is definitely working:

◆ Interpreters at Scotts Bluff National Monument increased shuttle

usage by 11% during the summer of 2003.

◆ Everglades National Park reported that its two interpreters helped

boost participation in various onsite programs by as much as 40%.

◆ Thanks to its interpreters, Valley Forge Historical Park’s summer

shuttle program was so successful that it will now be offered during

other seasons.

“While on the Isle Royale ferry, our transportation interns pre-

sented a brief interpretive program about how people traveled

on Lake Superior throughout history. These dynamic young peo-

ple also explained that visitors can help preserve our resources

by using public boat transportation. Many of our regular visitors

were very pleased with the personal attention and the concern

for the environment.”

W h e r e T r a n s p o r t a t i o n I s J o b O n e

The Ford-supported Transportation Scholar Program recruits relevant

professionals, as well as graduate and post-graduate students, to live in

National Parks and work on solutions to their transportation problems.

The 17 scholars placed to date have helped numerous National Parks

educate their staff about transportation-related issues, partner with

metropolitan and state planning bodies, conduct vital studies and

plan new transportation systems.

Case in point: Fort Clatsop National Park was facing an intense traffic

problem. Most days its small parking lot was overflowing by 10 AM,

forcing visitors to leave their cars on county roads. The parking

overflow contributed to major congestion in nearby Astoria, OR,

and the situation threatened to worsen during the Lewis and Clark

Bicentennial celebrations.

Solving the problem required measures beyond building a larger park-

ing lot. Consequently, NPS, regional transit providers and other com-

munity stakeholders partnered to develop a solution that would enable

visitors to leave their cars at their hotels and use an expanded regional

transit system. The partnership quickly won several key federal grants.

Although the synergy was remarkable, Fort Clatsop staff realized that

their intense daily activities didn’t leave much time to coordinate such

a complex project. Thankfully, a Ford scholar arrived in July 2003 and,

within a matter of months, helped to:

◆ develop new bus routes to the Park with regional transportation

providers

◆ create the plans for a new Lewis & Clark Explorer Shuttle network

that will connect Fort Clatsop with cities and other major tourist sites

in the area

◆ negotiate a contract for a new timed-ticket system (which will be in

place by January 2004)

◆ design a new entrance-fee structure, which now includes a timed tick-

et, transportation to and from the Park and three days of riding privi-

leges within the larger regional transit system

These efforts generated so much excitement that the Oregon

Department of Transportation has provided $600,000 toward highway

advisory systems and signs, as well as over $100,000 of in-kind mar-

keting support. Bottom line: The Ford Scholar has helped NPS meet its

obligations within this vital partnership.

Other Ford Scholar success stories include:

◆ A scholar at Gateway National Recreation Area developed multi-

modal traffic circulation plans, created a task force to guide the con-

version of the Park’s vehicles to alternative fuels and studied ways to

improve visitor access via public transit.

◆ Working with community partners and other agencies, the scholar at

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park helped create an

operations plan for a new alternative transportation system, includ-

ing routes and promotion strategies.

◆ At National Capital Parks Central, a scholar coordinated an ambi-

tious project to develop transportation alternatives that will eventually

enable visitors to experience our national monuments without using

their own motor vehicles. This scholar proved to be such an asset

that NPS hired her as the office’s first full-time dedicated transporta-

tion engineer.

D r i v i n g N e w R e s e a r c h

To complement the interpreters and scholars programs, Ford is sponsor-

ing several innovative studies that will identify ways National Parks can

overcome their toughest transportation challenges. For example:

Ford’s $70,000 grant to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park has

helped it develop five action plans for Cades Cove – the most congest-

ed area of the Park. Receiving matching funds from the NPS Alternative

Transportation Program, the Park will now help surrounding communi-

ties turn these plans into solutions.

Ford provided a $150,000 grant to the California Parks Initiative, which

is collecting baseline data that will be used to predict the extent to which

alternative transportation could improve air quality and reduce noise

pollution. This year, the project measured the impact of zero-emission

vehicles – such as those donated by Ford – at Yosemite National Park,

Joshua Tree National Park and Point Reyes National Seashore.

P i l o t i n g P r o g r e s s i n N e w Yo r k

With a $155,000 grant, Ford enabled the Gateway National

Recreation Area to seek advice from industry experts, organize focus

groups of potential Park visitors and examine the current modes of

access. When Gateway piloted a new ferry system based on this

research, Ford made an additional grant that helped establish a

free shuttle service that takes visitors from the landing site to various

destinations in the Park.

G a i n i n g M o m e n t u m T h r o u g h O u t r e a c h

Ford also conducts multimillion-dollar media, public relations and

advertising campaigns that promote alternative transportation while

encouraging target audiences to support their National Parks. NPF

and NPS complement this outreach with various in-Park efforts, such

as distributing thematic pamphlets and creating wayside exhibits.

Ford’s efforts influence visitors’ transportation choices during their

Park visits and foster systemic improvements through the National

Parks. For example:

◆ Ford promoted its involvement with the Partner Program in publica-

tions distributed directly to its network of more than 20,000 dealers.

The content and creative elements encourage individual dealers to

support their local Parks through donations and other activities.

◆ By targeting magazines that regularly feature stories on outdoor

activities (e.g., Backpacker, National Geographic Traveler, Outside),

Ford engaged audiences that would make ideal stewards of our

National Parks.

◆ Ford sponsored specific issues of TIME For Kids – distributed to over

8 million children in classrooms nationwide – that included stories

about National Parks. The company also reached youth with NPS

messaging through its partnership with the popular television show

“Blue’s Clues.”

◆ Ford helped sell more than 1,000 National Park Passes by promot-

ing them to customers, via billing statements and My Ford

Magazine.

A R o s y O u t l o o k

Many of the women – known as “Rosies” – and men who worked

together on the home front to help ensure victory during the Second

World War are now 80 years old or more. If their historic stories

and relevant artifacts aren’t collected quickly, they could soon be

lost forever.

With generous funding from Ford, NPS and NPF amass and organize

these priceless personal histories, which will be incorporated into future

exhibits and research centers at the new Rosie the Riveter/World

War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California.

The Park’s Visitor Center will be housed in a former Ford assembly

building – one of the main attractions within the largest concentration

of intact WWII historical structures and sites in the U.S.

Local and national press coverage about this project has been intense,

including a five-page spread in TIME magazine. As a result, the Park has

received an increasing deluge of calls from people interested in visiting.

As a Proud Partner, Kodak works with the NPS and NPF to harness the

power of photography to deepen the public’s emotional connection to

their National Parks. And in the process, the company is proving that a

picture is not only worth a thousand words, but also countless opportu-

nities to showcase our National Parks.

E v e r y o n e W i n s

Kodak’s generosity is helping NPS fulfill its congressional mandate to

hold a photo contest for the American people. In fact, the company has

spent over $2 million to operate and promote the annual National

Parks Pass Experience Your America Photo Contest, which enables

visitors to submit their photographs of National Parks. The winning

entry adorns the following year’s National Parks Pass.

This initiative not only secures a treasure trove of beautiful photos, it

also gives NPS valuable opportunities to deliver key messaging to a

wider audience. Kodak works with its retailers to promote this contest

to the public, thereby encouraging millions of people to visit our

National Parks.

E n t e r i n g t h e D i g i t a l A g e

Kodak has generously donated digital cameras that have enabled

more than 240 National Parks and Cooperating Associations to

document their natural and cultural resources and create more dynamic

in-house publications.

Through its Ambassador Program, Kodak provides dynamic and knowl-

edgeable staff members to Acadia, Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountain,

Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks – at no cost (Kodak covers

their wages and other expenses during their five to eight week stay).

These Ambassadors organize free photo tours, seminars on digital

photography and slide shows that highlight the best places to take

Currently operating at Mount Rushmore and the Statue of Liberty,

National Park Portraits are Kodak concessions providing visitors with

top-quality photos of themselves near famous NPS landmarks. In addi-

tion to teaching visitors about the Parks (the packaging features educa-

tional messaging), the concessions generate thousands of dollars for

NPS thanks to a generous revenue-sharing arrangement with Kodak.

Kodak helped make the grand opening of the new visitor center at the

Tuskegee Airmen National Park memorable. The company helped fund

the high-profile event, which attracted numerous VIPs, including

Alabama Governor Bob Riley, Craig Manson, the Department of the

Interior’s Assistant Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and NPS

Director Fran Mainella. Kodak also provided complimentary digital

are reviewed by NPS. NPF distributes reprints of the advertorials to

selected members of Congress and to officials within the Department

of the Interior, NPS and each featured Park.

TIME has donated substantial advertising space to NPF for promoting

National Parks. Appearing with a creative “Join America” call-to-

action, four ads encouraged readers to purchase a National Parks

Pass. Four additional ads urged people to learn more about National

Parks and how to become stewards by visiting NPF’s web site.

Also, Time for Kids has brought National Park messaging into more

than 80,000 classrooms, helping teachers and youngsters alike create

meaningful in-Park experiences during field trips and family vacations.

For example, the magazine distributed a special poster that enabled

2 million students to learn more about National Parks and encouraged

them to become Junior Park Rangers.

Ruminating about America’s natural treasures, Theodore Roosevelt once

said, “We have fallen heirs to the most glorious heritage a people ever

received, and each one must do his part if we wish to show that the

nation is worthy of its good fortune.”
