LOGISTICS MARKET PROFILE• The logistics industry in India, which is currently worth $160 billion, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.5 per cent to reach about $215 billion by 2020.

• The Indian logistics industry provides employment to more than 22 million people.

• The Global Ranking of the World Bank’s 2016 Logistics Performance Index shows that India jumped to 35th rank in 2016 from 54th rank in 2014 in terms of overall logistics performance.

• The grant of infrastructure status to the logistics sector, covering cold chain, inland container depots and warehousing facilities in November 2017, has been a major milestone.

• Improving logistics sector has huge implication on exports; it is estimated that a 10 per cent decrease in indirect logistics cost can increase 5-8 per cent of exports.

• The warehousing industry in India has been witnessing increased growth over the past few years primarily driven by the demand in manufacturing segment, and need for storage of raw material and finished products from industries such as automobiles, pharmaceuticals and food processing.

• Of the total warehousing space of about 1,800 million sq feet in India, the industrial and agricultural segments constitute about 86 per cent and 14 per cent, respectively.

• The warehousing industry is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 10 per cent during 2016-2022.

• The cold chain market in India, which was valued at $167 billion in 2016, is projected to reach $235 billion by 2020.

• Since 2011-12, this industry has been enjoying the infrastructure status. Further, 100 per cent FDI is allowed through automatic route.
