Kudos to Eastern Region Public Relations Director Clarena Jones for providing a tool to share the many activities in the Eastern Region to support our Y. E. S. program. I’m excited about the energy each of you bring to our organization. It’s contagious and elevates my spirit to lead the Mighty East to Move NSPDK Forward. Our Creator took me on a journey from October to December to visit townships in Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey. It was no accident I had the opportunity to witness great scholarship programs to support and mentor our youth to greatness. Nor was it a coincidence we attended St. James AME Church in Newark, New Jersey (where my daughter attends) and learn this was the home church of several Sorors in Delta Pi chapter. It was no accident as we looked for a Soul Food Restaurant in Jersey City, the home of Alpha Chapter, we passed the school named after one of our founding mothers, Gladys Cannon Nunery. It was our Creator's divine and purposeful intent to provide me a greater appreciation of the purpose and legacy of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. You, my sorors have set the standards high. Giving your best to our students, parents and the community is evident in your commitment to the purpose of NSPDK, Inc. and our motto, “To Foster a Spirit of True Sisterhood among Teachers and to Promote the Highest Ideals of the Teaching Profession.” You are my inspiration. In this issue of the January Newsletter, you will find some of the highlights from chapter activities demonstrating the various ways chapters implement our Y. E. S program. I have every confidence you will enjoy the Eastern Region Newsletter as you continue to enthusiastically carry forth the ideals of our Founders. As we come to the close of another year, thank you again for your commitment and dedication to NSPDK, Inc. As we begin a new year, let 2020 be a year of love and prosperity to you. Have a wonderful and blessed New Year! May the Force be with us as we lead and prepare to celebrate the coming of our 100th year Anniversary! Happy New Year!

E. S program. In response to the recent measles outbreak here are 3 vital immunizations for women I'd like to discuss.

Chances are you haven't thought about vaccines since your children were children. But adults need them too. As we get older, our immune system weakens and puts us at risk for complications from diseases like the flu. Here are 3 vaccines you may need now:

1. Shingles vaccine:

Consider this vaccine if you are at risk for heart disease. Shingles, a condition marked by painful, blistering rash, is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. It stays silent in your body and can reactivate years later, when that happens, it raises the risk for heart attacks or strokes by forming inflammation in your arteries.

2. Influenza vaccine:

Consider this vaccine if you have diabetes. Diabetes make the immune system less able to fight infections and more likely to cause other complications with you ending up in the hospital. Pneumococcal vaccines are suggested annually, since pneumonia is a common but serious flu-related complication.

3. Tdap vaccine:

Now this is a vaccine that has been on the shelf for some time, consider this vaccine if you have little ones in your life. In the United States alone there has been a resurgence of the whooping cough and infants are especially susceptible to catching the whooping cough, and it can be fatal. It is suggested that infants be vaccinated at 2,4,6 and 15 months, but for adults, the vaccine is only one dose and can be given anytime.

Ladies, I hope the information is helpful and these recommendations will keep you feeling vibrant and healthy.

Soror Angela Ringgold [email protected] Membership Chair, Eastern Region

Membership, the lifeline, the oxygen, the blood supply, the future of National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Entering into the 20’s, 2023 more specifically, we look forward to our sorority exceeding our greatest expectations as a strong body of educators, scholars, and advocates. Celebrating NSPDK’s 100th Anniversary is an occasion we have begun planning for: deciding the venue, the theme, the itinerary, the attire, the entertainment, the vendors, etc. But perhaps the best statement of who we are will be the strength of our numbers, wherever the Conclave is held.

The Eastern Region is meeting the challenge of increasing membership and chapters are diligent in their recruiting, retaining, and reclaiming efforts. Beginning with Cluster meetings, ‘Meet and Greets’, Teach-A-Rama activities, school socials, public relations outreach, and community programs, new Krinon lines are being initiated as active and valued members of this great sorority.

THE EASTERN REGION – FORWARD 2023!

twenty-twenty

(adjective) keenly or acutely perceptive: an opinion based on twenty-twenty hindsight.

THE ORIGIN OF TWENTY-TWENTY

Twenty-twenty “keenly or acutely perceptive,” as is often remarked of the advantages of hindsight, has its roots in vision. In ophthalmology, twenty-twenty means “having normal visual acuity,” and is based on the Snellen chart developed by Dutch ophthalmologist Herman Snellen in 1862. Many will recognize this chart as the array of letters one reads when taking an eye test. Snellen calculated fractions to determine visual acuity, or the clarity or sharpness of one’s vision, and twenty-twenty refers to the fraction that corresponds to what someone considered to have normal vision can see at a distance of 20 feet. By the middle of the 20th century, twenty-twenty was a jazz term meaning excellent. By the early 1960s, the disillusioned, regretful expression twenty-twenty hindsight had emerged in the business world.

“A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true”. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We pause to honor those icons on the front lines of justice and dedicated to ending racial discrimination, disenfranchisement, and human rights inequity.

Something to Smile About

A little girl came home from school and said to her mother, “Mommy, today in school I was punished for something that I didn’t do.”

The mother exclaimed, “But that’s terrible! I’m going to have a talk with your teacher about this…by the way, what was it that you didn’t do?”

The little girl replied, “My homework.”

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:19 ESV)

Jehovah Jireh

(JJ, A Special Friend) Soror Gwynne “Rev”

Delta Nu

Happy New Year to all of My Sisters! Thought I’d share this with you, may it bring you peace and relief! One day I was reading my daily devotional and it began to tell the story of Abraham and Isaac. It was here that Abraham went to Mount Moriah to sacrifice his son. But just in the nick of time, God provided a lamb to be offered in his place. In response to this, Abraham called this place Jehovah Jireh – the Lord who sees and provides. As I continued to think about the number of times that my God – Jehovah Jireh saw me and provided for me, I realized that I had a friend, “JJ”. Then, all these thoughts began to flood my mind:

• Every time I needed a car and didn’t have the money to get it, “JJ” showed up and I drove home in one.

• When I needed a job, someone would call me with one, only “JJ” could do that. • When I needed to take care of some health need and didn’t have insurance, “JJ” was

present and worked it out. • When I needed to do something and didn’t have the resources, they would appear

because “JJ” was with me.

Check this out, not only does He provide our tangible needs. I’ve learned that He provides all our needs, that means intangible too:

• “JJ” has healed my broken heart and wiped tears from my eyes. • I’ve made it through dark places when I couldn’t see my way, “JJ”. • Literally healed me when I was sick, on more than one occasion. • Delivered me when I was deep in sin. I still make some mistakes but thank God they’re

not the same ones. In Philippians 4:19, Paul reminds us that:

1. You have to have a relationship with God, to refer to Him as “My God”. 2. In times of necessity it is “My God” that provides/supplies all our needs – not just some

but all, no matter what they are. 3. Not only does He supply all our needs, He doesn’t do it based upon our wants/desires.

Page 19: National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. EASTERN REGION...Daisy Bates Dick Gregory Ralph Bunch Fannie Lou Hamer Shirley Chisolm Dorothy Height Elijah Cummings Barbara Jordan Medgar

19

In other words, beloved, Jehovah Jireh (“JJ”) is our source and our strength. Well, needless to say, after this devotional my blessed assurance grew in leaps and bounds. I have gained a greater understanding of the power of “JJ”. I pray that you are nor offended by this nickname because it blessed me and I am certain it will bless others. What a joy to know that there is someone who loves us and is willing to make sure we are kept. How about that for being a kept woman. Sisters, check out your keeper, if it ain’t “JJ”, no way! Thank God for “JJ”! Happy 2020, be blessed!
