Frank William “Will” Wade was named the 22nd head men’s basketball coach at LSU on March 20, 2017. He comes to LSU after a two-year stint as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University with four years of very successful experience as a head basketball coach. Wade was introduced to LSU fans in a most unique way for an introduction of a Tiger coach -- at a special media event held in the middle of the LSU Student Union. Wade told the media and a large contingent of LSU students: “I am so excited about the opportunity to lead this program and LSU Basketball back to the top of the SEC and back to regular, consistent NCAA Tournament appearances. We have been to four Final Fours. We have been to 21 NCAA Tournaments. We have 10 SEC Championships, and we are going to add to all three of those categories over our tenure here. “We are going to have players, staff members, everyone in our program is going to be committed to doing what it takes to make LSU the best basketball program that it can be. We are going to have unwavering commitment to put the team first, to put the state first, to put our school first to represent all of these folks in a first-class fashion. We are going to be a hardworking team that represents this great university that represents this great state,” Wade said. LSU and its fans are not looking for a rebuilding program, but taking the foundation and making it solid again – a change of culture that gives the program a look of consistency year-after-year. Wade, one of the youngest coaches in Division I at 34, but one of the most energetic showed his recruiting chops early with a class for the 2017-18 season that was ranked 16th in college basketball in the composite recruiting rankings. Wade’s recruiting chops and promotional ideas has created a buzz in the pre-season that hasn’t been seen too often and the Coach has done his part, speaking most of the summer on the Tiger Tour and to student groups making sure they feel a part of the program. Coach Wade has been seen on the night prior to football game visiting with folks in the RV lots and on the first day of school was out in a golf cart picking up students and giving them a lift to opening day classes. The native of Nashville, Tennessee, directed VCU to a 51-20 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances the last two seasons. The 2016 Rams advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating seventh-seed Oregon State before losing to Oklahoma. Wade was the youngest head coach in the NCAA Tournament in 2016. In 2017, VCU lost to St. Mary’s in the first round of the 2017 tourney. The Rams were 28-8 over his two years in the Atlantic 10 Conference, posting 14-4 records both

years. The team was 25-11 in 2016 and earned a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season crown. The 2017 team won 26 games and finished second in the league, one-game behind Dayton. Under his tutelage, guard Melvin Johnson earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in 2015-16 while Je Quan Lewis represented VCU on the 2016-17 first team. Mo Alie-Cox was named to the A-10 Defensive Team in both 2016 and 2017. Wade, age 34, previously served at VCU as an assistant with the Rams under Shaka Smart from 2009-13. VCU was 113-37 during that time, reached three NCAA Tournament and won the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championship. He was part of the staff in 2011 when VCU advanced from the NCAA “First Four” all the way to the Final Four in Houston. During his tenure as a Ram assistant, Wade, who worked closely with VCU’s post players, saw the Milwaukee Bucks select center Larry Sanders with the 15th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft (now with Cleveland). In addition, Wade played a major role in the development of current NBA players Troy Daniels (Memphis) and Briante Weber (Charlotte). Weber owns VCU records for 3-pointers in a single season and career steals. Wade is credited with being a key figure in four top non-power five recruiting classes in his four seasons at VCU. Prior to becoming the head coach at VCU, Wade served as the head coach at Chattanooga for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. His first Mocs squad went 18-15 in 2014, finishing 12-6 and second in regular season Southern Conference play. The 18 wins overall were the most by the program since 2008-09 and the 12 wins in league games was the highest total since 2010-11. The team made the school’s first postseason appearance since 2009 in the CIT. Wade was honored with the Anton Foy Southern Conference Coach of the Year award for his efforts in 2014. Also that year, Z. Mason became the first Chattanooga student-athlete to win the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year award. The Mocs won 22 games in 2015 and finished 15-3 in the league as Wade guided Chattanooga to its first 20-win season since 2004-05. He finished his two seasons there at 40-25 and 27-7 in league play. In the two seasons prior to his arrival, Chattanooga was 24-40 overall and 13-23 in SoCon play. In his four years as a head coach, he has a combined record at Chattanooga

and VCU of 91-45 and 55-15 in conference play with three post-season appearances. Wade’s reputation, where ever he has coached, is a person who is a tireless worker and relentless recruiter. Wade was VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart’s first hire upon being named the head VCU coach in 2009. That reputation was cemented prior to his arrival on the VCU campus. He served as an assistant to Tommy Amaker at Harvard in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Much like at VCU, he was Amaker’s first hire. In their second year, the Crimson went 14-14, the first season of .500 or better in the program since 2001-02. Wade had a hand in the development of future NBA standout Jeremy Lin and assembled a top 25 recruiting class during his stay. Wade’s coaching start came at Clemson where he served as Director of Basketball Operations (2006-07) and Graduate Assistant (2005-06) after four seasons as a student manager (2002-05). There he worked for coaches Larry Shyatt (2002-03) and Oliver Purnell (2004-07). In eight years on coaching staffs at Clemson, Harvard and VCU, the teams had a record of 177-97 with six postseason appearances (2005-13). Wade is married to the former Lauren Deason, and the couple has one daughter, Caroline Elizabeth.

LAST TIME OUT – LSU 84, UT MARTIN 60 The Tigers got back on the winning track and was able to go into the lengthy exam break with an 84-60 win over UT Martin on Nov. 29. LSU improved its defense and was able to get some things done offensively that made it an easy night on the scoreboard. LSU had three players in double figures with Skylar Mays equaling his highs in field goals (6) and three-point field goals (4) in scoring 18 points in 34 minutes to go with three assists. Duop Reath came off the bench to play 21 minutes and hit for 15 points and nine rebounds. allowing UTM to get within 12 early in the second half. The Tigers had a 38-22 advantage in points in the paint and scored 29 points off the 18 UTM turnovers, while UTM got only five off LSU’s seven turnovers.

LSU SHOOTS 50 PERCENT AGAIN AGAINST UTM In four of LSU’s first six contests, the Tigers opened with two games shooting 60 per-cent or better and has since then had two more games of 50 percent or better from the floor, all LSU wins:

Alcorn State (11/10) – 36-of-59 – 61.0%Samford (11/16) – 39-of-65 – 60.0%Michigan (11/20) – 27-of-46 – 58.7%UTM (11/29) – 31-of-62 – 50.0%

LSU’s first three games of the season equaled out to 102-of-170 (60.0%), the third best three-game field goal shooting percentage since 1975:

Jan. 2003 (106/170, 62.4%)Feb. 1979 (95/158, 60.1%)Nov. 2017 (102/170, 60.0%)

For the season, LSU is shooting 52.6 percent (179-340), best in the SEC and fifth in the nation. Last year, LSU shot 45.1 percent from the field. LSU will be looking to improve its field goal percentage defense which after six games stands at 47.6 percent (161-of-338), 14th in the conference

LSU INSIDE THE ARC As of Tuesday, LSU, according to TeamRankings.com, was No. 1 in the country when it came to shooting inside the arc. The Tigers are at 63.1 percent, including 21-of-32 in the last game against UTM (65.6%). This is up from last season when LSU shot 50.2% inside the arc. LSU is making 29.8 field goals per game, up 2.3 from last year’s whole season average of 27.5.

LSU OUTSIDE THE ARC The Tigers made 10 treys last time out against UT Martin and has made 49 in six games (8.2 a game), up from last year when the Tigers made 6.3 a contest. But opponents, which made 8.9 a year ago, have made 9.3 in the first six games. LSU is shooting 36.6 percent from the arc, up from 33.6 percent a year ago.

THE TIGERS DID WHAT AT THE LINE???? An LSU team that at times struggles at the line over the years, was on the mark against Samford (11/16), making 19-of-20 for the game, including 16-of-16 in the first half. LSU’s lone miss came in the first half with 2:38 to play after LSU made its first three of the night. It marked the fourth time since 1966-67 for LSU to shoot at least 95% when attempting at least 20 FT’s in a game:

11/16/2017 – W, vs. Samford – 105-86; 19-of-20 FTs (95.0%)2/21/2009 – W, vs. Auburn – 79-72; 21-of-22 FTs (95.5%)2/2/2008 – L, at Alabama – 72-81; 21-of-22 FTs (95.5%)2/4/1989 – L, at Miss. State – 79-96; 19-of-20 FTs (95.0%)

In Maui, LSU was a strong 48-of-61 for the three games of 78.7%, and most of that came in the Marquette game (Nov. 22) when LSU was 23-of-26 at the line (88.5%). Despite, mak-ing just 12-of-20 against UT Martin, for the season, LSU is 95-of-125 at the line (76 percent). That is well ahead of the 69.6 percent that LSU shot at the line during the 2016-17 season.

HELPING LSU’S FG PERCENTAGE Helping the Tigers field goal percentage has been its ability to make layups and dunks in the first six games:

LAYUPS – Alcorn 10-14; Samford 14-17; Michigan 10-14; Notre Dame 9-18; Marquette 14-23; UTM 14-17 … Total layups percentage (68.9%) … Dunks 12-of-12.

DOUBLE FIGURE ASSISTS It seems a little amazing that on Nov. 29 in 2016 and 2017, an LSU player was able to record double figure assists in the Maravich Center. Both times by then freshman. On Nov. 29, 2016, then freshman Skylar Mays had 11 dishes against Houston. Then on Nov. 29, 2017, freshman Tremont Waters posted 10 assists against UT Martin. Since the start of the 2002-03 season, there have been seven double figure assist games by six players:

11 – Skylar Mays, vs. Houston, 11/29/201610 – Tremont Waters, vs. UT Martin, 11/29/201710 – Ben Simmons, vs. NC State, 11/24/201510 – Charles Carmouche, at Marquette, 12/22/201210 – Garrett Temple, vs. Troy, 11/30/200810 – Tack Minor, vs. UNO, 11/24/200410 – Tack Minor, vs. Ohio State, 1/15/2005

THE OPPONENT – UNCW The Seahawks have won at least a share of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship for three consecutive years … The team is presently 2-4 this year after falling in its last game before a break of its own – 93-88 at Greenville, N. C. against East Carolina … UNCW was down six at the half and was able to tie the game to force overtime.Junior forward Devontae Cacok led UNCW with 35 points and 12 rebounds, but host East Carolina outscored the Seahawks, 14-9, in the overtime period. Senior guard Jordon Talley chipped in 13 points, sophomore guard Jaylen Fornes collected 10 markers and senior for-ward Marcus Bryan wound up with his second double-double of the season on 10 points and 11 boards. UNCW won 29 games a year ago and 25 in 2016, playing in the NCAA Tournament in both of the last two years. Colin Bryan (C.B.) McGrath, an assistant coach on The University of North Carolina’s 2005, 2009 and 2017 national championship teams, was named the 11th men’s basketball history in UNCW history on April 3, 2017. A native of Indianapolis, McGrath, 41, comes to the coast from UNC, where he spent 14 seasons on Roy Williams’ staff in Chapel Hill. He lettered four years as a point guard under Williams at Kansas and served on his staff in Lawrence for four years before moving with his mentor to the Tar Heel state. This will be the fifth time the teams have met with this the first meeting since 1984. LSU has won all four previous meetings – 100-68 in Dec. 1980; 70-55 in Jan. 1983; 94-59 at Wilmington in Nov. 1983; and, 88-65, in Dec. 1984.

START OF IMPORTANT HOMESTAND The UNCW game is the start of an important homestand for LSU as the work is put in to develop this first team of Coach Will Wade. Starting with Sunday’s game, LSU will play in the Maravich Center every three days through Dec. 22:

Dec. 10 – UNCW, 4 p.m. (SECN+) – 29 wins last year, 25 wins in 2016Dec. 13 – Houston, 8 p.m. (SECN) – Win vs. Arkansas; 3rd straight year to playDec. 16 -- Stephen F. Austin, Noon (SECN) – NCAA Tournament 4 of last 5 yearsDec. 19 – Sam Houston, 7 p.m. (SECN+) – 21 wins in 2017; post-season in 2016Dec. 22 – North Florida, 7 p.m. (SECN+) – 3rd striaght year on the LSU schedule.

After Christmas, LSU will travel to Memphis for a Dec. 28 game before opening SEC play at home against Kentucky on Jan. 3. Sunday’s game starts the Christmas Wadecation in which tickets for the five games at home between Dec. 10 and Dec. 22 can be purchased for a combined $30 and there will be giveaways for each of the games.

TIGERS LOCAL CONNECTION This year’s Tiger team has eight players from Louisiana – six returnees in Brandon Sampson, Skylar Mays, Marshall Graves, Reed Vial, Aaron Epps and Wayde Sims; and, the two signees from Louisiana – Brandon Rachal of Natchitoches and Galen Alexander of Breaux Bridge.

ONWUASOR STARTS LAST TWO GAMES IN PLACE OF SAMPSON Graduate student Randy Onwuasor has started the last two games for the Tigers after the injury to Brandon Sampson, playing 34 minutes against Marquette in Maui and 12 min-utes in the UT Martin win.

In the two games combined, Onwuasor has played 46 minutes and made 7-of-14 shots with two rebounds, two assists and 18 points (13 vs. Marquette, 5 against UT Martin). The Southern Utah graduate led the Big Sky Conference in scoring a year ago at 23.6 minutes per game (fifth in the nation).

EPPS CONTINUES TO GET HEATLHY After missing the first game of the year with a leg injury, Epps saw a limited 10 minutes of action in the Samford game (11/16), hitting 4-of-5 shots for eight points ... He equaled the second highest scoring game of his career against Michigan in the first game in Maui (11/20) when he scored 14 points in 23 minutes on 6-of-7 shooting with two treys. Epps has also been part of the different lineups Coach Wade has used, starting both the Marquette and UT Martin games. He played 24 minutes against the Skyhawks in the last game, with six points and a season high eight rebounds. So far this year, Epps is averaging 6.6 points and 3.0 rebounds a game, hitting 14-of-28 field goal attempts.

SKYLAR MAYS GOOD ON AND OFF THE FLOOR It all fits in doesn’t it – pre-med major; 4-plus GPA and starting guard on the team. Last year it was starting point guard for 25 of 31 games. This year it’s still somewhat starting point guard because in Coach Wade’s system, he believes in having two point-guard types out on the floor to smoothly run the offense through. So far the numbers are good as he is averaging 11.8 points per game, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Against UT Martin, Mays equaled his career high for field goals (6, fourth time) and three-pointers (4, second time). Mays has hit 22-of-47 field goal attempts (46.8% compared to 41.1% a year ago) and is 9-of-26 from the field. He hit his first 16 free throws and his 18-of-21 this season.

SENIOR DUOP REATH Reath did not start against UTM but came off the bench to play 21 minutes with 15 points and his season high of nine rebounds. The rebound total is more in line with last year’s average of 6.2 boards a game. This year in the first six games, he is averaging just 4.8 boards a contest. The senior has shot the ball well, however, with just one game (the first of the year) shooting under 50 percent. He is 26-of-43 for 60.5 percent, above last year when he made 51 percent and he is averaging the same points per game as last year at 12.0 a game. ON THE NBA FRONT Here’s the list of former LSU players in the NBA and G-League:

Jarell Martin – Memphis Grizzlies Jordan Mickey – Miami Heat Johnny O’Bryant III – Charlotte Hornets Ben Simmons – Philadelphia 76ers Garett Temple – Sacramento Kings
