Expected mid to late July......

Trolleybuses in East Central London. Taylor/ Adam Gordon A4. Softback. 184 pages.435 photos including 12 in colour. pull out wiring map.

Continuing the series of the pictorial survey of London trolleybuses, this book embraces routes that operated in the eastern part of the Central area. Commencing at Gardiners Corner the journey moves to Aldgate where a large number of views are used to illustrate the many aspects of trolleybus operation at this important terminus. Route 653 takes the reader up to Hackney; then two routeings to arrive at Bloomsbury. Moving to Liverpool Street, route 649 is followed as far as Dalston Junction; the mythical and mysterious DALSTON STOKE is featured. Continuing with the 581 Holborn Hall is reached. During this part of the book, 1253 and 1348 – both preserved – are seen on opposite pages at Old Street. Returning to Islington, two different ways of getting to Smithfield are illustrated.

As some of this book is in north London tram territory a number of pictures of cars on the subway routes are illustrated. The usual traffic circulars are used, with a new feature being Ministry of Transport details of short workings.

Trolley Jottings. London Meetings / TrolleyZoom Meetings. One obvious result of the current restrictions on gatherings has been the suspension of London meetings. However, modern technology has come to the rescue and the NTA is currently hosting a series of regular meetings via Zoom. One advantage is that "attendance" at these meetings is not restricted to those members who can travel to central London, but is open to members around the world, and so far we have welcomed members from four continents. Details of forthcoming meetings can be viewed in the Meeting Section of the website, which is regularly updated, and which gives details of how to access the meetings. The current page is reproduced below. The actual page allows members to view or to view again some of the presentations for a limited period.

The programme of London meetings has been suspended with immediate effect until further notice.

When it is possible to resume London meetings, information will be posted on this section of the website and in Trolleybus Magazine. We apologise to all members and friends for this action, which has been taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and advice issued by H M Government.

TrolleyZoom Meetings

Whilst London meetings are suspended as a result of the coronavirus pandemic restrictions, the NTA will operate a series of on-line meetings (TrolleyZoom) using Zoom. The meetings will last 40 minutes (including sign-in time) and will start promptly at 1900hrs (BST) on Wednesday evenings. (This is 1800 GMT, or 2000 CET). Zoom meetings lasting no longer than 40 minutes and with no more than 100 "attendees" are free of charge.

If you would like to take part, please email David Lawrence, Membership Secretary at [email protected] for the Access Code that you will need to log-in.

Wednesday 3rd June - PETER HASELDINE will present a show featuring trolleybuses in Switzerland in the early 1970s, when systems still had individualistic fleets of vehicles, unlike today's uniformity.

Wednesday 10th June - PAUL NICHOLSON from Australia, an NTA member since 1967, will present a show on the subject of his Retirement Travels since 2003, with a strong emphasis on San Francisco but ranging from Solingen to Valparaiso.

Wednesday 17th June - MICHAEL RUSSELL will present a review of trolleybuses in the Donbass region of Ukraine. If you like your trolleybuses in the company of heavy industry and colliery slag heaps, this is the show for you!

Recordings Italian Trolleybuses 1975-1978 by Michael Russell (presented 25 May). (expires 4th June)

Digitised images from the archive of the late Robert Mack presented by Ashley Bruce (27 May). (expires 4th June)

DON'T BE SHY!! There must be many members who never have the chance to present their photographic work to a wider audience and others who have insufficient for a full two-hour show in London. Please come forward to offer your presentation, otherwise these TrolleyZoom meetings, which are proving very popular, will just fizzle out.

TrolleyZoom meetings are co-ordinated by Peter Haseldine, our News Editor. Offers to present future TrolleyZoom meetings on any trolleybus-related subject, past or present, should be sent to him at [email protected]

And finally....... As previously mentioned I am researching the history of the Trolleybus Society, a group of pioneer trolleybus enthusiasts, based in Bradford (1952 to 1958). A photograph has come to light in the R. F. Mack collection, curated by Ashley Bruce for the NTA of what appears to be an earlier tour of the system, dated July 1951. I am wondering if any of you can identify any of the fashionable young men about town in the photo. So far we believe that Chacey Humpidge , Bradford Manager is on the extreme left, and J.S. King is second from the right. The young lad may be Mr Humpidge's son. Some possible suspects whose names may be familiar are R.F. Mack himself (who may have been the photographer of course, D. Chalk, M. Peck, R.B. Parr, and Roy Brook. I would be grateful for any information, and indeed if there are any erstwhile members of the Society who have not yet come forward, I would like to hear from you...
