That first seizure led to Maggie’s mul-tiple diagnoses of epilepsy, PDD-NOS (a form of autism), and finally Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a condition with developmental disabilities. Maggie, at 11 years old, has faced more adversity than most will experience throughout a lifetime. But she fights back.Maggie competes in both track and bowling in the Special Olympics, and joins her family on their weekly runs. Beyond her physical accomplishments, Maggie is also a young philanthropist. She has dedicated her mile along the marathon route to “Maggie’s Monkeys” and asks that friends, family and sup-porters like you join her. Bring a new stuffed toy monkey to Maggie’s mile, and she will donate them to the kids at Nationwide Children’s.

ThE STARTing linE

The starting line for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon & ½ Marathon is at the corner of Third and Broad streets, where 18,000 runners and walkers will ALL start together at 7:30 a.m.

We’ll once again kick off the Marathon & ½ Mara-thon with the Danger Brothers and a great fire-works display brought to you by Scotts Miracle-Gro! This will kick off a series of activities for the next 13.1 or 26.2 miles.

The race finishes on Nationwide Boulevard. Spec-tators heading to the finish line are welcome to be on either side of Nationwide Boulevard.

Once the race is over, there is a restricted area where runners will pick up their medals and food bags. Spectators will be able to catch up with athletes at Celebration Village in McFerson Commons.

There are shaded areas to relax, inflatables for youngsters to let off some steam and live music to keep everyone energized after the race. It’s a great location to celebrate the accomplishments of runners and walkers.

Born with Spina Bifida and Hydro-cephalus, Toby has had 12 surgeries in his short five years since birth. He sees nine different doctors at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and receives speech, physical and occupational therapies. He breathes with a ventilator while he sleeps, eats an all-pureed diet and uses a feeding tube for water and medications. Recently, he developed a seizure disor-der and suffered one that lasted more than three hours. Despite this laundry list of obstacles, Toby perseveres. He even walks on his own with braces and a walker.

Taylor is living proof that love, hope and faith can turn a scary diagnosis into a wonderful life. When she was less than three months old, the Rock-well family brought baby Taylor to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for a severe case of jaundice. Doctors soon discovered that Taylor was suffering from liver failure. After the diagnosis of Biliary Atresia, surgeons at Nationwide Children’s sprang into action and per-formed a life-saving operation called the Kasai Procedure on Taylor. Without this surgery, Taylor would not have lived past two years. These days, Taylor makes time in her busy schedule for her doctor appoint-

In the Race to Give Back, You’ve Already Won.By supporting our communities, you’ve already made a difference

before you’ve run a step. Limited Brands thanks runners, volunteers

and supporters for leading the way and inspiring others at this

weekend’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon

and 1/2 Marathon.

2012 is an historic year. Not only is this Columbus’ Bicentennial, but we are celebrating the start of a wonderful relationship between our event and an incredible community asset — Nation-wide Children’s Hospital.

“Benefitting Nationwide Children’s Hospital” isn’t just a tagline — we already are seeing a strong level of sup-port from participants in the form of donations when they registered, as well as many serving as “Children’s Champi-ons” fundraisers.

On October 21, you will see strong evidence of this partnership all along the course, including the 26 “Patient Cham-pions” who will be out there cheering you all the way to the finish!

Unlike a Marathon or ½ Marathon, there is no finish line for Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which has 1 million patient visits a year.

But with all of our help, more and more youngsters can become healthy, and stay that way, because of the hard work of the hospital and the thousands of men and women there.

Thank you for supporting our race and Nationwide Children’s Hospital — a winning partnership that started strong, and will remain strong — because of you.

Because of his premature birth, Patrick suffered just about every complication a baby born that early could: grade 1 brain bleed, open Patent Ductus Arteriosus, Necrotizing Enter-colitis, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, kidney reflux, numerous blood transfu-sions, and more. He had eight life-sav-ing surgeries at Nationwide Children’s Hospital while his dad was deployed to Iraq with the Army Reserves. Patrick must have taken after his dad, because he fought through each obstacle and is now a joyful, ornery and healthy 20-month-old. Throughout each new health problem that arose, Patrick and his doctors never gave up. During the

• Five years ago my little buddy, Payton Julian, was out of no-where diagnosed with Stage 4 Wilms Tumor. The outcome was not expected to be a good one. I remember waiting in the hospital building him Legos for when he got out of surgery. Because of what Nationwide Children’s Hospital did for my young friend, I am able to see him whenever I want. Earlier today we were in a sword fight and playing catch with a baseball. I get to watch him play soccer, basketball, and baseball for his school. Every step of my 26.2 miles is for him and all the children that unfortunately enter the doors of the hospital.

– Derek Metzger, Children’s Champion, Full Marathon runner

• My sister, Sharon (Roberts) Courson was born in November 1962. When she was about six weeks old, she went to Children’s Hospital in Columbus for surgery to correct craniosynostosis. I remember my mother saying that the surgery had only been per-formed four times before; but Sharon recovered with no long-term effects, and is alive and well 50 years later. Nationwide Children’s Hospital holds a special place in the hearts of our family, which is why I became a Children’s Champion when I decided to run the half-marathon. She is living proof of the life-saving work that the Hospital performs, and we are all grateful that Children’s Hospital was there when our family needed it.

— Karen Roberts, Children’s Champion, Half Marathon runner

• We are so lucky to have such a wonderful children’s hospital right here in our own community. After four months in the NICU, nine surgeries, seven hospital stays and weekly therapy for nearly four years now, Nationwide Children’s Hospital is our second home. The Doctors, nurses and therapists are our second family. They have saved Logan’s life more than once, helped him breathe, eat, walk, see, hear and communicate. I’m not sure how one says “Thank you” for such a gift but we are honored to be a part of this marathon to help raise money for the hospital that has done so much for us. I hope people will donate as little or as much as they can to keep allowing this hospital do what it does so well.

— Jennifer Kile, mother of Patient Champion Logan Kile

• My husband Aaron and I feel that the community should sup-port Nationwide Children’s Hospital so that every child would be able to receive the wonderful and lifesaving treatment like our daughter, Sophia. Without our community’s help, some families may be faced with very difficult decisions regarding their child’s life based on their resources to pay. If everyone could just give a little, it would help treat many and give children opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have. Thank you so much.

— Billie Jo Schumm, Registered Nurse at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Children’s Champion, and mother of Patient Champion Sophia Schumm

• Every parent and grandparent’s wish is for their children to grow up and be happy & healthy, but life isn’t always perfect... accidents happen, illnesses occur, so when this happens wouldn’t it be great to be able to know that your child is being provided with the best of care by one of the national leaders in care where your loved one is receiving nothing less than the best of care?! This is why it’s SO important to support Nationwide Children’s- Our children deserve this hospital, our community deserves this hospital, and most importantly the doctor’s and staff of Nationwide Children’s deserve the community’s support! — Jeff and Shannon Rockwell, Children’s Champions,

and parents of Patient Champion Taylor Rockwell

• Our experience at Nationwide Children’s was wonderful. My son Ben was cared for by many amazing medical professionals, and I will never forget the kindness we were shown during his extended stays in the NICU and the PICU. I have been a runner for years, and when the Columbus Marathon partnered with the hospital, I became a Children’s Champion. I’m running the half marathon in memory of my beautiful little boy. I hope that the funds I raised will help to ease the pain and suffering of a patient in the future.

— Michele Hayes, Children’s Champion, Half Marathon runner, mother of the late Benjamin Hayes

• My life is changed forever, and I will always dedicate time to this cause, until I can no longer. Then, I know that I will have inspired others, most importantly, my sons.

– Jennifer Sawchuck, Children’s Champion, Full Marathon runner, and mother

of Patient Champion Nicholas Sawchuck
