The Swampland Indians lived in the Southeast where it was very hot.
They lived in homes called Chickees which were built from Cypress trees.
The Chickees frame was made of Cypress logs
and the roof was covered in
palmetto leaves or grasses.
There were no walls in Chickees because they weren’t needed in the warm southern areas and that way
breezes could blow through.
The people of the Swampland ate deer ,fish ,and corn and grew
vegetables too.
They also grew gourds and tobacco but they didn’t eat them!
The gourds were dried and used as drinking cups and bowls.
Rabbits provided meat for food.
They used animal skin for clothes. They wore deerskin shirts, leggings, and moccasins. In hot weather, men wore breechcloths.
Women wore dresses, leggings, and moccasins. Sometimes the clothes were beaded in beautiful colors.
Deer were a very important natural resource. They were used for food,
clothing, and tools for building, hunting, and eating.
The kids helped them with
hunting, feeding, and making
houses..
