NOVENA OF MASSES FOR THE FAITHFUL DECEASED

From Nov. 2 to Nov. 10, a mass is offered everyday for the repose of the soul of those departed loved ones belonging to parishioners. Make sure your loved ones are remembered. You may enroll them by visiting our website and sign them up for a mass intention (indicate that you are enrolling for our novena) or return one of the All Souls envelopes that can be obtained by asking one of our volunteers during our Sunday Mass.

MEMORIAL CANDLES ON THE ALTAR FOR OUR DEAD We invite you to buy an offering candle from the rectory and decorate it with a scanned picture of the loved one you want to remember (be creative), then bring your candle back to the office. The candle will be lit during the Feast of All Souls on November 2nd and it will stay in the altar until November 16th. This is a per-fect way of honoring the dead and remembering those who have gone before us.

THANKSGIVING MASS

Join us at our multi-lingual celebration to take place Thursday, November 26th at 9 a.m., in Our Lady of Lavang Patio. All monies collected during the Thanksgiv-ing Mass this year, will benefit Needy Families in our community, as part of our efforts to help needy families during this holiday season.

CHAPTER ONE

SHATTERED DREAMS

10. For decades, it seemed that the world had learned a lesson from its many wars and disasters, and was slowly moving to-wards various forms of integration. For example, there was the dream of a united Europe, capable of acknowledging its shared roots and rejoicing in its rich diversity. They envisioned a future based on the capacity to work together in bridg-ing divisions and in fostering peace and fellowship between all the peoples of this continent”.[7] There was also a growing desire for integration in Latin America. In some countries and regions, attempts at reconciliation and rapprochement proved fruitful, while others showed great promise.

11. Our own days, however, seem to be showing signs of a certain regression. Ancient conflicts thought long buried are break-ing out anew, while instances of a myopic, extremist, resentful and aggressive nationalism are on the rise. Once more we are being reminded that “each new generation must take up the struggles and attainments of past generations, while setting its sights even higher. This is the path. Goodness, together with love, justice and solidarity, are not achieved once and for all; they have to be realized each day. It is not possible to settle for what was achieved in the past and compla-cently enjoy it, as if we could somehow disregard the fact that many of our brothers and sisters still endure situations that cry out for our attention”.[8]

THE END OF HISTORICAL CONSCIOUSNESS

13. As a result, there is a growing loss of the sense of history, which leads to even further breakup. Concern about this led me to offer the young some advice. “If someone tells young people to ignore their history, to reject the experiences of their el-ders, to look down on the past and to look forward to a future that he himself holds out, doesn’t it then become easy to draw them along so that they only do what he tells them? He needs the young to be shallow, uprooted and distrustful, so that they can trust only in his promises and act according to his plans. That is how various ideologies operate: they destroy (or deconstruct) all differences so that they can reign unopposed. To do so, however, they need young people who have no use for history, who spurn the spiritual and human riches inherited from past generations, and are ignorant of everything that came before them”.[10]

14. These are the new forms of cultural colonization. Let us not forget that “peoples that abandon their tradition and, either from a craze to mimic others or to foment violence, or from unpardonable negligence or apathy, allow others to rob their very soul, end up losing not only their spiritual identity but also their moral consistency and, in the end, their intellectual, economic and political independence”.[11] One effective way to weaken historical consciousness, critical thinking, the struggle for justice and the processes of integration is to empty great words of their meaning or to manipulate them. Nowadays, what do certain words like democracy, freedom, justice or unity really mean? They have been bent and shaped to serve as tools for domination, as meaningless tags that can be used to justify any action.

SUEÑOS QUE SE ROMPEN EN PEDAZOS

10. Durante décadas parecía que el mundo había aprendido de tantas guerras y fracasos y se dirigía lentamente hacia diver-

sas formas de integración. Por ejemplo, avanzó el sueño de una Europa unida, capaz de reconocer raíces comunes y de alegrarse con la diversidad que la habita. Ellos deseaban un futuro basado en la capacidad de trabajar juntos para su-perar las divisiones, favoreciendo la paz y la comunión entre todos los pueblos del continente»[7].También tomó fuerza el anhelo de una integración latinoamericana y comenzaron a darse algunos pasos. En otros países y regiones hubo in-tentos de pacificación y acercamientos que lograron frutos y otros que parecían promisorios.

11. Pero la historia da muestras de estar volviendo atrás. Se encienden conflictos anacrónicos que se consideraban supera-

dos, resurgen nacionalismos cerrados, exasperados, resentidos y agresivos. Lo que nos recuerda que «cada generación ha de hacer suyas las luchas y los logros de las generaciones pasadas y llevarlas a metas más altas aún. Es el camino. El bien, como también el amor, la justicia y la solidaridad, no se alcanzan de una vez para siempre; han de ser conquistados cada día. No es posible conformarse con lo que ya se ha conseguido en el pasado e instalarse, y disfrutarlo como si esa situación nos llevara a desconocer que todavía muchos hermanos nuestros sufren situaciones de injusticia que nos re-claman a todos»[8].

EL FIN DE LA CONCIENCIA HISTÓRICA

13. Por eso mismo se alienta también una pérdida del sentido de la historia que disgrega todavía más. En esta línea se situaba un consejo que di a los jóvenes: «Si una persona les hace una propuesta y les dice que ignoren la historia, que no recojan la experiencia de los mayores, que desprecien todo lo pasado y que sólo miren el futuro que ella les ofrece, ¿no es una forma fácil de atraparlos con su propuesta para que solamente hagan lo que ella les dice? Esa persona los necesita vacíos, desarraigados, desconfiados de todo, para que sólo confíen en sus promesas y se sometan a sus planes. Así funcionan las ideologías de distintos colores, que destruyen —o de-construyen— todo lo que sea diferente y de ese modo pueden rei-nar sin oposiciones. Para esto necesitan jóvenes que desprecien la historia, que rechacen la riqueza espiritual y humana que se fue transmitiendo a lo largo de las generaciones, que ignoren todo lo que los ha precedido»[10].

14. Son las nuevas formas de colonización cultural. No nos olvidemos que «los pueblos que enajenan su tradición, y por manía

imitativa, violencia impositiva, imperdonable negligencia o apatía, toleran que se les arrebate el alma, pierden, junto con

su fisonomía espiritual, su consistencia moral y, finalmente, su independencia ideológica, económica y política»[11]. Un

modo eficaz de licuar la conciencia histórica, el pensamiento crítico, la lucha por la justicia y los caminos de integración es

vaciar de sentido o manipular las grandes palabras. ¿Qué significan hoy algunas expresiones como democracia, libertad,

justicia, unidad? Han sido manoseadas y desfiguradas para utilizarlas como instrumento de dominación, como títulos va-

cíos de contenido que pueden servir para justificar cualquier acción.
